That's the Mac equivalent of the BSOD. The only difference is that it's pretty. If you want the full gory details of what exactly happened, you'll have to change a configuration so it'll tell you. It's about the equivalent of a "spontaneous" reboot that XP sometimes does in a default install.

Blade Runner 2, 4, and 5-disc sets in December
Time
Since I couldn't post this the other day due to the forum problems, I'll post it now.

There's two great things about this set (so far that I've seen). First is the letter included by Ridley Scott. "My goal was to give you the film in whatever form you prefer, with the best picture and sound quality possible." That is awesome. Not "Here's my director's cut" or "Here's the theatrical cut" and live with it. We got 5 different cuts and we can pick whichever one we like best.

The second thing is from the features on the Workprint disc. In the behind the scenes feature, the guy that "headed up" the creation of The Final Cut says "We can't call this the Director's cut, since that's already out and I didn't want to call it a Special Edition since the fans would just think that we're trying to get them to buy yet another cut. We had to give it a name that says this is it, there won't be any other versions, this is The Final Cut."

Those are the two most awesome things about this set. We don't have to wonder if we're ever going to get a version with all the scenes from another version and we don't have to wonder if they're ever going to try and "gouge" us again. This is it!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I was wondering the exact same thing. What is the point? Is this just another avenue for people to vent? Hasn't that been done enough? Lucas will probably never release the OOT in a truely remastered format. I think it's just time to let it go and move on to other things.

Enjoy the copies you have in whatever way you prefer. It's time to give up on Lucas ever changing his mind.

I personally thought the briefcase was one of the coolest parts of the 5-disc set. I probably won't store it on my DVD shelf, but I still think it looks cool.

Maybe not, but I think the movie would end up worse if someone else was directing. We'd end up with PJ's style for LOTR and then a different style for the Hobbit, which might or might not work. I think that's really the only reason a lot of people want PJ directing, so all the movies have the same style.

Hollywood really has to get over this CGI fascination and get back to some roots.

Um, yeah, good luck with that happening. CGI may look a little faker, but it's usually far cheaper than using puppeteers and models. If a model doesn't blow up right, the whole thing has to be rebuilt. If it doesn't quite blow up right in a computer, you just change a few parameters and re-render.

Everytime talk of going back to their roots comes up, I'm reminded of John Knoll's comments (I think it was him) about the change from optical effects and model usage to CGI in Hollywood. "Instead of a soft dissolve it was a hard cut".

Journeyman's being cancelled? Well that blows. That was the only new show this season that I kept as a "series recording" on my DVR. Every episode has been getting better and better.

As for Tin Man, that was utter drivel. There's no need to "reinvent" the Wizard of Oz, at least not the way they did it. I'm glad it was only a miniseries because it was utter crap.

Oh well, with the writers strike still going on even the good shows won't be coming back for quite a while.

I was actually surprised to see Dead Zone was still on recently. I lost track of things somewhere in season 2 and 3 and I noticed that even in the latest episodes, they were referring to that Senator as still being the one to cause Armaggedon (sp?). You'd think they would've persued that at some point and wrapped it up.

As for 4400, I've never watched that show. Never really had any interest in it.

Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?
Time
Originally posted by: Number20
The issue is that most people still have old TVs, and aren't really in the market for something new. They are waiting around for "prices to drop" and aren't wanting to upgrade right now. Agreed, retailers are pushing HDTVs hard, but if you look at sales figures vs. predicted sales for HDTVs, they have consistently been very dissapointing for retailers. One stat I heard is that at current sales, HDTVs won't acheive 60% of the market for 15-30 years. If most people are that slow to adopt HDTV, I don't see any bigger hurry to adopt high-def DVDs. Especially when you are dealing with people who just stopped buying VHS about 5 years ago or so. They just upgraded, so why do they need to again? And the whole "format war" scares people off quickly. They remember they or someone they know got burned by buying a betamax, and they don't want to go through that again.

Best Buy recently announced that profits are up 52% for the quarter. This is huge and wasn't expected. It's also based on big ticket sales like HDTVs and DVD players (probably hi-def of both formats and standard def). The point, HDTVs have been selling like hotcakes for the past two years, but especially this year. More and more people do have HDTVs and are getting rid of their old sets (or their old sets are breaking).

As for people "not feeling the need" for hi-def, that pretty much goes against everything I've been reading. Everything I've been reading, and this is based on industry people talking to actual consumers and not just "well, this is what I think is going on", says that people aren't buying into either format because they don't want to end up with a dead format. That is the single overriding concern of most consumers. Those same people are also not buying regular DVDs much anymore because they don't want to have to rebuy everything once the format war is over.

Consumers would love nothing more than to buy hi-def DVDs to enjoy on their new HD sets. The problem is that there isn't one format and it doesn't look like there's going to be a single format for quite some time. This entire "format war" is either going to relegate both formats to a niche market or people will be forced to buy two players if they want to enjoy movies from all studios, especially since Disney is exclusive to Bluray.

5 years is a pretty long time. Most of those people have been purchasing DVDs since then, but they've just recently bought upgraded TVs. Now they're seeing how crappy their DVDs look on a bigger screen. I know exactly how they feel too. I'd love to get a hi-def player, but there's no way in hell I'm doing it until there's a cheap dual format player or a single format.

Okay, I may have exaggerated, but let's start with this:

He's pro-amnesty.

First off, there was a bill in the senate for Arkansas that would have required proof of citizenship for voting and required state agencies to report cases of suspected illegal immigrants. Huckabee shot it down.

Huckabee also proposed a bill that would offer state funded scholarships and state benefits to illegal aliens.

Huckabee also supported the McCain-Kennedy Senate bill to give amnesty to illegals. Claims God supports the bill (...uuhh, okay). Made public statements that those who oppose the bill are "racist" and "bigoted."

Huckabee wants to grant clemency to repeated DWI offenders, and it has been hinted at that significant campaign contributions may have influenced this decision.

Huckabee has proposed tax hikes and then lied saying he didn't.

And then there's this whole thing about releasing a rapist which I haven't read up on yet.

And Huckabee's latest criticism of Bush sounds like eeevery other Democrat in the last seven years.

Oh, and I'd like to add he's completely clueless on public education.

I knew there was something wrong with him, and I was right, especially when the media has dropped Giuliani like a hot potato and getting behind Huckabee. Something is very, very wrong. The media WANTS to have Huckabee as the Republican candidate so he's not any kind of threat against Hildebeast or Obama.

Not that I'm behind Huckabee, but I think you need to be aware of a few things.

1. The courts have overturned similar laws in every other state deeming them unconstitutional. So, was Huckabee suppose to support it, only to have it overturned? Maybe yes, but if it is unconstitutional (I don't believe it is btw), then he would be supporting something that's unconstitutional. I don't want someone who will do that.

2. He didn't release a rapist. Yes, he recommended the guy be released on parole, but that apparently also entails some form of monitoring. He specifically denied the request to commute the sentence. So it was actually the parole board, with appointees from Bill Clinton and another governor, that released the guy.

3. He's clarified those statements. What he's saying is that instead of having a "you're with us or against us" attitude, we need to have such a strong military that no one would dare stand against us. That is exactly what Reagan did and it's one of the reasons the Soviets fell. They simply couldn't keep up with our level of military strength and spending.

Like I said, I don't necessarily support Huckabee, but you should at least know all the facts before making a decision. I don't support Giuliani or McCain either. I mostly support Fred Thompson. I don't know exactly how I feel about Romney.

They're to busy making costumes and hanging with the guys at the conventions that are also making costumes. And those guys aren't posting or hanging out heavily on message boards because they're busy making costumes.

I use to be pretty good friends with the LCO of the 501st. That's essentially the way it is. None of those people really have the time to hang out and post on message boards unless it's costuming forums. And then they're either asking a quick question or posting how they did something or answering a question.

They do it for the same reason the guys do it, they're having fun.

My nominee for stupidest ... statement ... ever.

Quite simply, you are disagreeing with me because I raised the point that Bin Laden should be a higher priority than P2P downloaders. And you'll type incessantly to prove otherwise because this came from me and not just anybody. Methinks ye doth protest too much. You have such a hard-on for my posts that I think you secretly have a crush on me. It's like you're trying to dip my proverbial pigtails into the inkwell. But if you keep looking then one day you'll meet a really nice fellow who will let you be the alpha male and make your life complete.

Don't flatter yourself asshat. Your original statement had an air of "The entire bureau is off trying to catch p2p downloaders when they should all be focused on bin Laden". Gimme a break. The FBI isn't solely focused on catching P2P downloaders, just like they aren't solely focused on trying to catch bin Laden.

I made an assumption, apparently a bad thing to do around you, that by saying "It goes to the CIA" that that would be taken to mean that INTERNATIONALLY, the CIA is probably actively looking for bin Laden right now. Somehow, I seriously doubt that there are FBI agents in Afghanistan or Pakistan looking for bin Laden.

And FYI, I disagree with ANYBODY that thinks the FBI shouldn't be enforcing the law. That is clearly what they were doing when they went after those P2P sites. Whether you think that P2P downloading SHOULD be legal or not is a different matter. If you don't like it, petition your congress critter to change the law.

Gee, lordjedi is arguing with me again. What a fucking surprise. Seriously, it's one thing to hate my ass openly, it's another thing to argue against everything I say regardless of any basis in fact. It only goes to strengthen my arguments overall when you chime in. Okay, school's in, kiddies:

1) Read up on the Piracy Deterrence and Education Act of 2003, the Direct Connect Sting and Operation D-Elite. Then get back to me on how the FBI is not doing any of the P2P surfing themselves. Warning ... the latter has ACTUAL STAR WARS CONTENT for all you Elitist Star Wars Fanboy Dipshites [sic].

2) Unless you think he's hanging out in Dearborn, MI, please explain to all of us why Bin Laden remains on the FBI's most wanted list if they're not actually looking for him. You know, it's not just the CIA's job; the FBI does operate internationally to catch criminals who have acted on domestic soil. And Bin Laden indeed has indeed perpetrated criminal actions on our soil (please argue against me on that). The FBI is integral to the War on Terror abroad. But don't take it from me, take it from Dubya hisownself.

So I obstinately stick by my guns (just like anybody who still supports Bush) and I reiterate that the FBI needs to focus more of its energy on capturing Bin Laden and not so much on shutting down P2P networks. And for the record, I don't use P2P networks. I merely have a sense of priority.

Did you even read the links you provided? Only ONE, the second ONE, mentions ONE FBI agent becoming a member of that underground network. The last one says at the BOTTOM that the MPAA assisted. To me, that says the MPAA saw it and reported it. The first one is just the text of a bill that grants the FBI the ability to ENFORCE the law. You want to get pissy about that? Blame Congress, not the FBI.

Since I HIGHLY doubt the FBI is over in Pakistan or Afghanistan looking for bin Laden, he's on the most wanted list so that if people or agents see him in the USA, he'll be arrested on the spot. The FBI doesn't do nearly as much work abroad as the CIA. That's the CIAs job. Yeah, the FBI are instrumental because they can operate across state lines, unlike local police.

I think everybody here knows that 10 people were arrested in connection with the early released copy of ROTS that showed up on bittorrent sites. Both of the links you provided that they did indeed raid the offices of those guys, but only the last link mentions a single FBI agent becoming a member. That's no different from covertly joining a mob group in order to take down the whole group. But I guess they shouldn't do that either, should they.

For the record, I would've given the same reply to anyone else that made a statement like that. Unfortunately for you, it's always you that makes those statements.

Finally some face protection for the troops
Time
That's great if you're going up against a shotgun. Unfortunately, most of the time, helmets, and masks, are really only good for protection against debris. That mask probably won't stop an AK-47 round or shrapnel from an IED. And, as Chaltab said, you'll have a hit to your peripheral vision.

I'm totally for troops wearing these, I'd just hate for people to assume that this is going to fully protect them, when it clearly isn't.

Since it's not a new series, it'll likely have an American release sometime early next year. I'm sure the same company that licensed the series will license the new movie. Once it's been brought over, it'll be translated and thrown on DVD.

That's what happened with Appleseed 2000. It was released in Japan sometime around the end of the year and then in January it showed up in the US.

Trigun is an awesome series. It was kind of short though, imo. Short, but very cool.

Yes, that's true, but you're incorrect in thinking you know what I'm talking about. BDs have a feature that allows them to have slightly faster read/write times for the same spin speed and, as I remember, that has to do with the way the data is configured on the physical disc. I'd have to look up that feature again just to let you know what it is though, and I don't really care enough at the moment to do that.

According to the technical info at videohelp.com BD has a maximum data transfer rate of 54Mbit and HD DVD of 36.55Mbit (Link).
A BD can contain more data so if it spins about as fast as an HD DVD can't it be read quicker anyway?

I wasn't aware of the current transfer rate, but it does still follow similar principals as DVDs and CDs. The faster the disc is spinning, the higher the transfer rate. It also makes sense that the transfer rates would be higher on those than they are on DVDs or CDs. Usually, the more data you have, the higher the transfer rate needs to be in order to get the data off just as fast as before.

And I swear I saw somewhere where they showed HD-DVD using a red laser, but again, apparently that was incorrect information.

I don't disagree with your every post, I just think it's lame to pick nits over a title. And the way Gryphon was treated for calling you on it is even dumber.

The site was started to get the OOT on DVD and yet people were asking him why he's here. What does the title of ROTLA have to do with wanting the OOT on DVD? Nothing. It has nothing to do with it. So he thought you were being a lame ass fanboi for bitching about the way the documentary portrayed the title. I thought you were too and couldn't figure out why you kept saying you didn't remember such a movie.

The point is that not wanting things changed at all seems to have been taken to an extreme. So much so that when some show uses a modified title, instead of your precious original title, that you guys make fun of it. The rest of the world could care less and probably recognizes it either way.

I don't know. Maybe all they want to put on the disc is the movie. A lot of releases are like that on DVD right now.

Well, it seems to me that the studios are quite content to take the existing mpeg2 version and just throw it on a BD since they have the space. When they don't have the space, they redo it in VC-1 and put it on the HD-DVD.

Well, a BD is bigger in terms of storage space but not disc size. Otherwise, the read/write times have nothing to do with disc space. It has to do with the configuration of the data on the BD. I'm not sure, but I think that's the main reason why BDs couldn't be manufactured on existing DVD production machinery.

That's incorrect. The read/write times have to do with how fast the disc is spinning. And the reason BDs couldn't be made on existing lines is because they use a different laser (blue diode). HD-DVD actually use the same color laser, it's just narrower, but not as narrow as a blue laser. BDs are bigger in terms of space simply because they're using a blue laser diode instead of a red one, so they can get the beam smaller, which allows you to pack more data into the same area. HD-DVD is backware compatible because it uses a red laser, so the width just has to be changed between a DVD and an HD-DVD.

I happen to agree with him. I think it's really lame to point out the difference of the title, especially since the title, IN THE MOVIE, hasn't been changed. The only thing that's been changed about the title is the DVD case. If I'm not mistaken, Spielberg even said, when it was released on DVD, that the actual title in the movie would not be changed. The only reason the DVD bore that title was to make it consistent with the others.

The title didn't make the movie. Some people just look for stuff to complain about.

Yeah and it looks like ADM was looking for something to complain about.
