Some people? It makes you wonder? I'll answer for you. Yes, they are more upset because it's a U.S. Marine. Thankfully, some are waiting to see if it was for real or not.

Dogs are killed everyday in some countries for food, yet I don't hear you protesting that. Also, apparently, dogs are being shot in Iraq everyday since they could be carrying IEDs. Again, I don't hear you protesting that.

There's rumors on some other sites that I read that the puppy was already dead. Again, I'll reserve judgment until I see the results of the investigation.

In other news, a 15 month old child was beheaded by his uncle today. It happened in a Baghdad marketplace. Apparently he got in a disagreement with the child's mother and the beheading was retribution.

A dead puppy doesn't look so bad after reading about that.

Wow FF, you seriously need to chill.

It sounds like if you had it your way, every kid that ever terrorized an animal (I knew a lot of them when I was a kid) would be put in jail for life because of what they could become.

Let's just try to sit back and wait it out a little. If he did in fact kill a puppy, the military has several options including, from an article on Google "It's all governed by the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and anything from reduction in pay to reduction in rank to confinement to discharge from the Marine Corps" is possible, Perrine said. If others are involved, they too will be disciplined, he said."

Do not think for a second that being discharged, especially if it's dishonorably, is going to be a pick nick for this guy. If they do that, his life will essentially be ruined. Every time he fills out an application, he'll have to explain (assuming he even gets an interview) why he was dishonorably discharged. He's going to have a VERY tough time finding any work if this turns out to be true.

I know how easy it is to edit video though. I've done some edits myself where you'd never know it was two different pieces of video. This could all turn out to be a fake.

I watched the video. As far as I can tell, there's several spots in the video where it could have been cut and had the puppy replaced with a dummy. Considering how easy it is to obtain the software necessary for doing that kind of an edit, and how many fan edits we have that have done some pretty strange editing, I wouldn't put it past these guys to have played some kind of joke.

I'm going to wait and see what else comes of this before I weigh in.

A router problem made YouTube inaccessible for many
"We are seeing a large shift from attacks that are directed at individual websites," he said. "The sophistication is getting a little smarter and they are attacking the infrastructure pieces behind them..., which is typically in most production environments the least invested in."

Some of the basic systems of the net, such as the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) which helps data reach its intended destination, were open to attack.

An accidental misconfiguration of BGP in some routers in Pakistan caused the recent problems with YouTube which left many people unable to reach the video site.

"BGP is essentially a relatively unprotected protocol and is seriously vulnerable to disruption," he said. "Should that happen, it could take a very long time to correct that situation."

First, it wasn't a router problem.

Second, the protocol did everything exactly the way it was designed to do.

Third, the problem was human error. The Pakistani government wanted YouTube blocked. So the ISPs in Pakistan blocked it, except they published the block higher up the chain and the other routers accepted it. That is exactly the way it's suppose to work. It works like that so if you change a route (to ROUTE around problems), you can then publish that new route in order to ROUTE around problems.

That part of the story is a red herring. Any company as large as YouTube has monitoring systems in place and they'll know when something like that happens. They'll also be able to fix the problem very quickly. Having YouTube offline for 2 hours is the LEAST of my worries during a terrorist attack. Having the power go out in the middle of the day is much closer to the top of my "worry list". Fortunately, most of those systems are not directly tied into the Internet, so there's very little to worry about there.

How much longer will the format war last?

I'd say we'll definitely see all of those, except Star Wars of course, sooner rather than later. The studios just have to retool for Blu-ray, but once that's done, I have no doubt we'll see all of those.

I'm sure that once Heroes Season 2 comes to DVD/Blu-ray, they'll remaster Season 1 at the same time and just rerelease it. And I have no doubt that LOTR will come out on Blu-ray, possibly once The Hobbit comes to theaters (I can't think of a better way to drum up interest).

Blame Fox for this, not Chris Carter. X-Files was originally suppose to run for 5 seasons. Carter had a 5 year plan. At the end of it, he wanted to stop. Fox told him that the show had to continue. So for 3 more long grueling years, crappy episodes were churned out. Just watch the series. It becomes painfully obvious in Season 6 that something has changed. Maybe those are the loose threads that sky was referring to. I certainly wouldn't call them loose threads though. I'd just call them bad episodes

The trailer looks like nothing. All we see is a group of FBI agents in a snow covered landscape (first hint it's X-Files), then some shots of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (confirmation that it's X-Files).

I didn't see anything really exciting besides "July 25, 2008". I'm looking forward to it, but it's only something to get excited about because it's a new X-Files movie. Other than that, there's virtually nothing to see in the trailer.

(SPOILER) new "STAR TREK" 2009 spoiler thread (SPOILER)

i am furious that due to conflicts with jj's new season of lost, and reportedly a sequel to the turd that is cloverfield, star trek 11 has been pushed back from christmas to may 2009.

the only possible good thing i can see coming out of this is it will give them time to find william shatner a part in the movie if his ego and money grabbing are checked at the door.

is it possible that the delays on this movie among other movies out there being pushed back has anything to do with the ended writer's strike?

i mean it pushed back narnia 2 and pretty much made the next temrinator movies cancelled and has had brian singer walk off of superman the man of steel, and led to the demise of the justice league movie.

supposedly the new james bond quantum of solace and indiana jone IV crystal skulls come out on schedule.

The other good thing about bringing it out in May versus Christmas is that the Summer season is typically better for movies than the Christmas season is.

Does Shatner even want a part in the movie? Seriously, all indications to me show that the guy has moved on. Star Trek isn't his life. He seems more interested in not being known as just Captain Kirk.

Demise of the Justice League movie? IMDB lists it as Pre-Production with a date of 2010. And actually, there's an article posted on its listing that says Warner is pushing ahead with a 2009 release date. In that same listing, they say T4 is also scheduled for 2009.

I'd say all the delays and indefinite holds were definitely related to the writer's strike. Now that the strike is over though, everything can get moving again.

Huh? Assuming you don't read the Appendixes or anything else related to Lord of the Rings (I'm talking strictly the books), what did they remove? I don't even recall anything in the book that explained all the christian symbolism or relations (Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, the Balrog, etc, etc, etc). A few things are explained in the appendix, but nothing really in the story. In fact, the even left in/put in Gandalf's explanation of the afterlife to Pippin at Gondor. I don't remember that from the book at all, but it's definitely there in the movie.

As far as I know, Tolkien explained the origins of Gandalf and the other wizards, the Balrog, Saruman, Sauron, and everything else in the Appendixes and the Silmarillion. Most of that couldn't possibly have been fit into the movies. The only explanation that really made sense in the movies is when Aragorn talked about the black riders and who they use to be.

i would not been all that suprised if in a year or two the 360 comes out in an upgraded version whose games are on blu ray, like sony.

having dvd games that have to be split up on four or five discs is rediculous when they can fit on a single disc.

there are rumors that final fantasy XIII which comes out in christmas 2008 is so massive it will take three dual layer blu ray discs to play on the ps3.

Ask the average consumer if they can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. They can't. That's why industry analysts say it's just as good. That really has nothing to do with Xbox Live though.

As far as MS putting a Blu-ray drive on the Xbox, don't bet on it. Instead, they're more likely to go with downloading the game right to the Xbox hard drive with Xbox Live. It would be similar to the way Steam works. A new games coming out, you preorder it and the moment it goes RTM, it starts downloading from their servers. Once it's available at retail, it unlocks and you play. No more messing with media, no more having to go to the store. That's how I see it working anyway, don't know if they'll really go that route or not.

Finally, market forces killed HD-DVD. Not Bill Gates, not Microsoft. That's just silly conspiracy talk. Microsoft is not all powerful.

I have yet to see a game that comes on DVD that doesn't fit on a single, dual layer DVD. Then again, I don't buy a lot of physical media games. The last 3 or 4 games I've bought have all been through Steam. If a game, like Final Fantasy, requires 3 dual layer blu ray discs, it's more than likely because of all the HD video content that they're putting into the game. The game part itself probably doesn't take up that much space. Final Fantasy games are well known for including lots of fmv cut scenes that sometimes run for several minutes. That's not a game in my mind, that's freaking movie that you interact with.

Uh, no, the Silmarillion would not make a perfect prelude. Many people were bored with the "3 endings" of ROTK. I shudder what those same people would do during the first 3 chapters of the Silmarillion.

A friend of mine put it perfectly. "Reading the Silmarillion is like eating sand". Yes, that's how dry that book is. Sure, there's content there, but you'd have to make it good enough that a vast majority of moviegoers would actually want to see it. Considering the changes they made to TTT and ROTK, making something up is probably better than having them adapt the Silmarillion.

I thought the senile children were old test subjects that were unable (or unwilling) to achieve the same ascension process (towards ultimate evolution) that Tetsuo (and Akira before him) had achieved. At the time I didn't quite understand why the maker of Akira wanted an ass like Tetsuo to become the creator of a new, big-banged reality, but I'd now guess that he was trying to comment that only someone as immature as Tetsuo would want to become "God." If so, I'd guess he has a view of evolution that defines it as the ambition of an insecure mind.

Uh, they weren't senile. They're psychics, just like Akira and Tetsuo. You're right that they weren't able to go as far in the psychic process, but they were still psychics.

I never really saw it as Tetsuo wanting to become "God" either. I always saw it as a guy who was picked on and made fun of his whole life (even by his best friend) suddenly having the ability to fight back and not wanting to stop using that ability. Kind of like Anakin learning to use the Force. No matter what happened, he kept getting attacked, so he did what pretty much anyone else would do...fight back and keep fighting. The problem was that the more he used it, the more it got out of control until it consumed him. If I'm not mistaken, when Akira was achieving "ascension", they were able to at least contain it. When Tetsuo did it, they simply couldn't get to him in time, though they were able to blow his arm off

Those nice fellows from the Jedi Order...
Time
In EP 2 and 3, you had a person who was CLEARLY falling to the dark side killing women and children. No other Jedi did any of that. So unless you're playing Anakin in this game, which I don't think you are, then I don't see it as necessary.

I seriously doubt LucasArts was trying to make a statement about war in general. It's much more likely that since Anakin did it in the movie that they felt the need to include it in the game. But as RRS-1980 said, since you're playing the good guys, the women and children shouldn't be there or you should be able to avoid them.

The last Star Wars RTS I played had you playing on the side of the Empire when you killed Ewoks during an initial scouting mission to Endor. Even that game showed the character having remorse for killing animals that were only protecting their territory. The same character later defects and joins the Rebellion.

If you really want to teach people about the results of war, have them play a game like Brothers in Arms on Realistic mode. No saving during missions. You die, you start over (which isn't realistic, but it keeps you from picking up where you left off). Or even better, play something like America's Army. You die, you do not respawn. You wait until the round ends because YOU'RE DEAD. In other words, if you really want to teach people about the realities of war, pick a game that isn't based in a fantasy universe. Star Wars is suppose to be fun and having a Star Wars game where the good guy is pretty much required to kill children is really lame.

Hell an even better way to teach people about the results of war is to actually teach them about real wars. Show them photos of what has happened in the past. Kids need to be old enough to understand everything involved though, otherwise you're just going to scare the crap out of them with gross pictures.

Here it is:

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6116/img5816eo1.jpg

My wife picked out the cake. The figures were literally grabbed off my display shelf about 30 mins before this photo. In all the rush and excitement of the day, I had forgotten to grab them. Luckily, one of my friends was able to go to my house, grab the figures, and bring them to the reception.

The action figures and playing the end celebration song from ANH were the only two things I told my wife I wanted to do (along with a lightsaber entrance). She picked everything else (photo place, reception hall, food).

I've seen it no less than 3 times. I also own the DVD that was released a few years back. It's really good once you figure it out. It took me a couple of viewings to figure out everything that was going on. I don't know a lot of people that "got it" on the first viewing. And that's why I think it's going to get changed, A LOT, for a live action movie. People need to "get it" on the first viewing, otherwise "it sucks!" So I'm sure any ambiguous or weird ass plot points will be spelled out to us or just removed. Hollywood has very little room for "I didn't get it".

I was one of the people who put Jedi as my religion, but it was a joke because I am essentially of no religion. That doesn't mean I don't believe in spirituality I just don't subscribe to any one religion and didn't give a shit about the government census so I wrote Jedi. Having said that, the force, as explained in the OT not the shitty PT, is actually based on Buddhism and so I guess you could say that I do believe in it to an extent.

The Force, as explained and shown in the OT, is based on many things, Buddhism being one. Just looking at the redemption part of ROTJ adds a bit of Christianity as well. I'm sure there's some Hinduism and other religions mixed in there too.

The Force from the OT was many many religions all rolled into one.

By that reasoning they should have asked me to write and direct the prequels, haha.

Lucas should have put the fans in charge of the prequels. At least then we'd get movies that made sense in context of the existing OT. Instead what we got is a series of movies that is wedged in with modifications made to the OT to make it work with the PT.
