For a Rey killed her parents storyline, the main issue to crack is you have to make Ochi’s ship be a different ship (same model) than the one her parents were in. To do this in my edit, I made the ship in her vision a different color, which some viewers thought was a mistake since it is a different color than the original vision from TFA. So the better option would be to change the color of Ochi’s ship.

To flashback to the killing of her parents I had a force lighting sound play as ship debris crashes to the desert floor. Feel free to use any ideas (or not) from my edit which is a Rey Nobody killed her parents edit. I’m not going to be updating it any further. The two shot is amazing. The cut made after the second puppet shot needs to be at a point before or after the whisp of white dust. That sudden movement doesn’t quite jive with the stillness in the shot of the kids afterword.

Beyond that, there’s the simple logistical problem. Even if the galaxy is receptive now, that’s a LOT of people and ships to find, recruit, prepare, and coordinate in just a couple hours of “send[ing] out a call for help for anybody listening.”

The dialogue you are referencing shows POE has lost hope. It shows that Zorii and perhaps the galaxy have not:

POE: (sighs) I can’t walk out on this war. Not till it’s over. Maybe it is. We sent out a call for help at the Battle of Crait. Nobody came. Everyone’s so afraid. They’ve given up.

ZORII: I don’t believe you believe that. Hey. They win by making you think you’re alone. Remember? There’s more of us.

Further, removing the dialogue doesn’t solve the problem of gathering such a large force so quickly. You would need added scenes to do that.

Some things are meant for Ascendant, others for fanfiction.

Even out and improve the lighthearted, comedic tone of this movie. Reduce the excessive expository. And most importantly, Superman should have a head.

1. For the car accident scene, cut closeup shot of the injured dad and cut the brother’s line “you did this.”
2. Cut the police officer’s expository line, “That’s my lunch, kid!”
3. Cut the expository that Darla is a “big hugger” and Billy adding, “I noticed.”
4. Darla introduces herself without her foster mom introducing her first.
5. Cut Darla’s line, “It’s a tough subject for me.”
6. Cut Darla talking in detail about veganism to set up an unfunny joke.
7. Cut Freddy weirdly trying to look in Billy’s backpack and the bunch of filler he says afterward.
8. Cut the reference to Harry Potter by the woman being interviewed.
9. Cut the pushy researcher learning the truth and turning to dust.
10. Added VFX and SFX to the glowing door.
11. The Wizard now makes it very clear Billy is not worthy but is humanity’s only hope. The subtlety of the theatrical cut incorrectly suggested to many viewers that Billy was pure of heart, which muddled up the storyline.
12. Cut Freddy’s line about bullet immunity and Billy’s comment about being bulletproof.
13. Toned down the horror fest in the board room scene with the seven deadly sin demons. Cut the explicit head eating. Rescored with something more festive by Josh Groban to lighten the tone and put everyone in the Christmas spirit.
14. Cut away before the demon, Greed, starts closing in on and attacking Dr. Sivana’s father. Just his scream is heard now.
15. Cut Dr. Sivana in the elevator getting angry and punching the screen. This quirky scene is no longer necessary now that the board room scene is toned down.
16. Retimed and trimmed the school security guard moron joke so it’s more effective and doesn’t explain the joke to us.
17. Added a small portion of a deleted scene during the bus incident where a pencil rolls across the length of the bus floor. Upmixed the stereo audio to full, convincing surround.
18. When Dr. Sivana goes to Billy’s home, cut the line about it being a shithole.
19. When Dr. Sivana arrives at the carnival, trimmed some of his dialogue.
20. Trimmed the awkward pause before Santa yells for everyone to run.
21. Trimmed Freddy’s weird “power matrix” remark about Dr. Sivana’s weakness.
22. Shazam doesn’t give the little girl a stuffed animal.
23. Shazam breaks the staff faster without asking if Dr. Sivana wants it back.
24. When Darla says they should kick his butt, Dr. Sivana immediately attacks.
25. After Darla states she can move super fast cut the line about hyperspeed.
26. After Darla catches the girl falling she doesn’t say, “I caught you.”
27. Cut part of Shazam’s speech where he describes six of the seven deadly sins.
28. Darla (in adult form) doesn’t ask what a lair is. Little Darla uses words like moderate so she shouldn’t suddenly become stupid in adult form.
29. Cropped out Mary’s reaction to the lair (she’s about to be in college and wouldn’t be all giddy about a lair). The performance was also a little cringy.
30. Retimed the dialogue of the lair scene to best enhance the comedy while removing Darla’s dopey (but funny) punchline.
31. Used Movila’s brilliant VFX and sound work, adding Superman’s head into the final scene with a short line of dialogue.
32. Changed the end credits music after the first post credits scene to “I Believe I Can Fly.” Retimed the credits to fit the music.
33. Moved the second post credits scene (telepathic communication with pet fish, Aquaman joke) back into the main movie. It now replaces the scene in the real estate office.

Thanks heavyside. I agree with you on the grading. It was my first major regrade. It’s was HDR. And it was Premiere. I won’t repeat that again.

In an edit I did I really wanted Rey to say I am a Jedi. I even tried for I’m a Jedi (in TROS she says I’m NOT I am.) No sound bite I found matched up well. So I tried the uh sound from the existing dialogue and the result was less than satisfying. This was last year and I spent an obscene amount of time trying to make it work. It seems like this is the same result now. It just doesn’t sound quite right. With the way she really needs to say it the best (easy) way is to do it from a rear shot of her. Which is also less than ideal. It may seem like an uphill battle but the key here to make it sound and look right is finding alternate dialogue from Rey and digitally altering her mouth movements. No easy task to pull of convincingly.

Ascendant keeps getting more and more interesting with tweaks like the puppet show, further extending Mustafar establishing shots, etc. I did notice in the force ghost scene, version 2 of jonh’s VFX was used. Unfortunately in Obi-Wan’s closeup his head looks very elongated. It just isn’t quite right as it looks like the credits of a 70’s movie on tv where everyone suddenly gets stretched. You have to be a little bit old to know what I’m referencing.

I used the old school shot of Obi-Wan from jonh’s V1, and would highly recommend using that shot or else or seeing if jonh can fix the aspect ratio of the head in his V2.

If its “always” as mentioned then I’d think it is the source audio combined with your system. I notice in many original films I have to use the voice EQ feature on my sound system to hear the dialogue well. But if you have a few specific examples of the most noticeable parts I could take a look.

I’m still using oohteedees but I’ve definitely stalled. It’s hard to go back to Premiere when you know how much better resolve is.

The center channel. Raising it for just certain parts or pretty much the whole thing?

1. the transition from MOS to BVS, great editing and music choices by JobWillins
2. the tornado flashback, again amazing implementation by JobWillins
3. the ending, no one could ever surpass what JobWillins did to end this

I’m a newbie to video editing, so this would be a slog.

Note that for most people’s tv’s, a 1.85 would not “fill more space” than 16:9 (which is 1.78). A 1.78 crop would perfectly fit a standard widescreen tv with no black bars at the top or bottom. A 1.85 would have slight cropping at the top and bottom of a standard 16:9 widescreen tv. The three main formatting options for a ZSJL edit would be to keep it as-is in IMAX format (1.33), crop to 2.39 to match Batman v Superman, or crop to 1.78 to fit a standard widescreen tv. I personally would opt for the 1.78 because this leaves as much of the original picture intact as possible on a standard tv, while not having black bars on the top or sides. It would also not be jarringly different from BVS should someone wish to watch BVS and ZSJL back to back.

thanks for the detailed answer. If at first you don’t succeed, reread the instructions! step 8 was not done properly. but I will check out how the HDR export looks a little closer. Because I didn’t do extensive grading after the Dolby Vision. Mostly just lessened the greens.

Edit: on closer review the HDR export is not good. So I went ahead and followed those instructions correctly.

44rh1n, I’ve successfully finished a 4K edit in Resolve using Dolby Vision and adding additional color correction. When I export the project, for example to an HEVC mp4, the final result looks beautiful. Note: the project settings are just as you specify (also the output is of course REC 709).

Here’s my question: when playing on a TV the HDR notification icon comes up signaling that this is HDR content. This this is just a flagging issue and this is fully an SDR export, correct?
