Idea: 'Cheers' - Seasons 9-11 preservation?
Time

Absolutely true. My only saving grace regarding Night Court is that I didn't dump my whole tape collection. When they did Cheers season 6, I figured they would see it through to the end, and dumped my VHS copies of the episodes.

The bastards. You'd think at the very least they could put them online somewhere for download. I'd pay to download them digitally, and there would be so little cost to them.

The general consensus is that the Rebecca episodes are inferior, by and large, to the Diane episodes. There are some exceptions (Cry Hard, for instance) but I think that's a fair assessment. Either way, sales of the Rebecca seasons were below the Diane seasons, and Paramount was displeased.

Given the lack of bonus features on the DVDs, though, I can't imagine there's not a profit margin to slap some episodes on discs and recycle the same artwork they've used.

Idea: 'Cheers' - Seasons 9-11 preservation?
Time

It has been widely reported–or at least widely rumored–that sales of Cheers Season 8 on DVD were so abysmal (thanks Kirstie Alley) that Paramount is no longer going to release the remaining seasons. It’s been over a year since season 8 appeared, and while the last season of Frasier is on the calendar for a Christmastime release, there’s been no action on season 9 of Cheers.

So I was wondering if there was any interest in preserving Cheers seasons 9-11 on DVD. They’re no longer on in syndication everywhere, so it may be tough to acquire the episodes. (I haven’t even found AVI files floating around.)

Yes, seasons 9 and 10 in particular were subpar, but included important episodes like the 200th episode celebration (“Cliff Claven according to Cliff Claven would be the wingnut that holds civilization together. According to me, he’d just be a winged nut.”), two Bar Wars episodes with Gary, an appearance by Kevin McHale, Henri’s competition with Sam, the marriage of Woody and Kelly, Robin’s return with the hidden treasure in Cheers, Norm’s job as a beer taster, and . . . okay, so clearly enough episodes to make it worthy of preservation. Plus, the finale (and episodes leading up to it) were as good as most of the older episodes, as well as an essential piece of television history.

“Sorry, we’re closed.”

Anyone have any thoughts or interest in doing this? It’s not on in my area, which is what led me to panic that these episodes may disappear.

Idea: Edit Halloween 2007 into a prequel to the original?
Time
I have to say that while I think it's possible, it wouldn't really fit. The whole point of the original is that Michael IS the bogeyman--there's no reason given for it. It's not that he was abused or neglected as a child, raised in a wildly dysfunctional family, or even was replaced by his new baby sister as his mom's favorite. He just IS evil. Zombie's film gave him too much of a backstory, which--at least to me, and I realize this is probably highly subjective--made the story less chilling.

You would also have the problem of Halloween II and the flashbacks there, if you wanted to involve it in the whole series.

I agree in general, although I think the escape scene in the theatrical is better. Also, some of the cuts and pacing are better, but that's minor compared to the overall decline. I can't figure out why he ended it the way he did in the theatrical--made it less like the original.

I also think that the chase of Laurie Strode is more like the chase of Rachel Carruthers in H4 than the original Halloween.

Fair enough, and like I said, I didn't expect anything other than lots of gore. But to me, that's NOT the way to solve a larger problem with the movie's pacing/dramatic structure. You don't fix a transmission by giving the car a new coat of blood-red paint. I mean, at bottom, isn't that what Lucas did with the prequels--don't bother with fixing a story, just give lots of new visual effects?

I saw parts of this at a friend's house I have to say that adding more gore was exactly the wrong direction to go, if you ask me. It was already more bloody, more visually violent (and more graphically sexual) than the first two Halloween movies combined. The strength of the original was in its shadows, its mood. I had no doubt Zombie would go for blood, but to try and improve the movie by adding more . . . I just don't get it. Maybe I'm wrong, and it'll be a huge hit, but I don't think so (granted, it may be a colossal failure for reasons other than it is too violent).

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - The Enhanced ABC Cut (Released)
Time
I think the cut is okay in the flow of the film--if you're looking for changes, you'll always notice something.

Also: Someone posted HD rips of Azkaban and Goblet of fire from the German broadcasts. They're on a.b.hdtv.german for anyone who is interested. Would probably require audio dubbing at the very least--maybe more. As C-3P0 said, "I'm not very knowledgeable about such things."

Looks really good--I like everything you did. The cut at 0:18 is a bit jumpy, but I don't think you would notice it if you were just watching the movie. I especially like lowering the music; that's the one thing I noticed about the ABC editions, very loud volume. Terry Jones would be apoplectic (and somewhere, perhaps, he is).

What is the most distressing aspect of the PT?
Time
I've read through this and thought about it, and I think that for me, it really has to be the blatant disdain for the original trilogy--which covers everything from Qui-Gonn and not Obi-Wan finding Anakin to the replacement of Shaw with Hayden in the RotJ DVD.

Not to say that the other stuff mentioned--midichlorians, awful plot, awful dialogue, awful performances (with the obvious exceptions of Palpatine and Obi-Wan)--isn't awful, but a lot of it (especially the midichlorians) is part and parcel of the disdain for the OT.

Darth Bane Novel: A Great Exploration of the Dark Side

Originally posted by: darkhelmet[Is Luceno a good author?

I have mixed feelings about him. I thought Labyrinth of Evil--prequel to ROTS--was good, but Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader was god-awful. One of the worst SW novels ever (that I've read: I avoid the NJO and the KotOR eras).

Luceno wrote the e-novel, Darth Maul: Saboteur, which you may want to check out to see how he handles Bane.

According to Wikipedia, citing the SW Insider, Luceno had planned to write about the quest for immortality of Qui-Gon and Darth Plagueis, but this was put on hold due to "continuity concerns."

Loads of extras including ALL deleted scenes and crap.

I'm curious: What's the reason for including the PT in such a petition? The transfers of that are pretty decent, and they come with some good bonus materials. It's the OT that has suffered.

Is it simply to make it more appealing to the PT's biggest fans, George Lucas and Rick McCallum?

Info: Harry Potter TV Edits?
Time
I want to start off by saying that I'm grateful to Rikter for preserving the ABC-TV extended broadcasts and to ADM for the extended edits, but watching the movies one-by-one in preparation for Phoenix, I do get the sense that the original versions are tighter and better paced. You could certainly add some of the scenes back in without sacrificing too much of it, but deleting some of the scenes was the right call.

So yes, I think there's room for a variation of an extended cut. Maybe a fan edit of the extended cut?

not to derail the topic, but isn't the quote "more wealth than you can imagine"? I thought it was "well" for a long time, until i realized that wealth made much more sense in context.

Yes, it's "wealth" (I checked the script in my copy of The Art Of Star Wars). I always thought it was "well" too, (although that makes no sense) but that does sound like what he's saying.

Also what it is in the annotated screenplays. As (I think it was) Carrie said, "You can type this stuff, but you can't say it."
