OBITUARY - Star Wars Fullscreen/Pan and Scan versions. R.I.P.
Time

So this is the opposite direction most projects move around here, but bear with me. I just came across a VCR in good working order, and I kind of want to use it to put Star Wars on a tape. Can someone point me towards a solid full screen version? I'd prefer the whole trilogy, but just the first film would be great as well. The 1982 Video Rental Library one on myspleen is pretty rough, I'm hoping for something more recent. The 1995 tapes, say. There's really nothing at all riding on this, I just thought it might be fun to make a tape after a decade plus of discs and files.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

So I finally got around to reading that spoiler board thing all the way through (http://spoilerboard.blogspot.com/ if anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about) and a lot of it seems pretty reasonable, but there are a few things I can't get down with. I seriously doubt Max Von Sydow's role is as small as they're asserting. I also can't see Kylo, Hux and Phasma all tooling around together on the same Star Destroyer for most of the movie, and I think Snoke is in more than one scene. Finally, the section about the third act is based on nothing but some very old rumors as far as I can tell, So I'm not taking that terribly seriously. Still, the Jakku stuff seems really plausible in terms of tone and pacing.

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

I've got to say, my favorite screenshots in this thread are the ones of the Blu Ray corrected to match the GOUT. Probably because I'm a 90s kid. I'm tempted to try to make a version of the DE with those colors for my own personal use, but I don't know that I have the energy (or computing power). If that sounds worthwhile to someone else with more initiative, it's something I'd like to see.

What is your favourite star wars author mine is Timothy Zahn
Time

I guess it would be Zahn for me too. There's a lot of stuff like the Bounty Hunter Wars and the Han Solo trilogy that I dug quite a bit, but given that Jeter and Crispin never came back and did anything else, I can't really consider them "Star Wars authors" like Zahn is. I guess Luceno gets a mention for being able to string a sentence together better than most of the other guys, but his pacing is usually off. I did like Shadows of Mindor an awful lot, but I haven't read any of Stover's other stuff. My absolute least favorite though was Barbara Hambley. Children of the Jedi was just abominable.

EDIT: I also think Stackpole is pretty overrated. Granted, I only read the first X-Wing book, and that was actually pretty all right, but the duology he did for the NJO (I'm blanking on the name) was powerfully lame. The way he positions his own original character Corran Horn as this super cool guy at the center of everything who everyone loves and is best buds with Luke Skywalker just really rubs me the wrong way, especially because he only gets cameos in other books if he's even mentioned at all.

Complete SW soundtrack box set: vinyl, CD and apparently hi-res
Time

I can't believe it took this long for the OT soundtracks to get a vinyl reissue. I saw a brand new LP of the TPM soundtrack at a record store a few months ago and was dismayed to learn that there were no plans at that point to release the originals, and the only ones available on Amazon are used copies from the initial run from private sellers. Hopefully these are made available individually at some point, because I don't intend to drop $230 on a box set that I only actually want half of.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 vs 2. Which do you like more?
Time

I think I enjoyed playing the second one more, but it really can't exist without the first, so I'm hesitant to say it was better. KOTOR II is really sort of a deconstruction of KOTOR. KOTOR II is way more interesting, which is what I tend to value in a story like this, but the first one is more perfectly realized, if I'm making any sense. It's very late here.

More OUT Rerelease Rumors from John Landis!
Time

How accurate to the theatrical presentation is any other given home release, though? I really don't know, I'm legitimately asking. My gut feeling is that everyone's standards for this are a little unreasonable. I have trouble believing that any studio is this conscientious, so I'm loathe to pick on Lucasfilm. I'll obviously be ecstatic if they go that extra mile, but fixing the tone is so much more important to me than faithfulness in the mastering.

More OUT Rerelease Rumors from John Landis!
Time

I'm all for it. I think the recomposited effects with the original plates from the SE look spectacular. Everyone here is really focused on the preservation aspect of this, which I agree is very important, but the main issue I take with the SE is the additions and changes, and I can't pretend I wouldn't be pleased as punch with a high def release that isn't 100% accurate (i.e. Cleaned up) as long as it doesn't have that stuff.

More OUT Rerelease Rumors from John Landis!
Time

Words Landis did not use:

-"Theatrical"

-"Original"

-"Restoration"

I forget who drew the distinction however many comments back between "theatrical" and "pre-1997", but the only thing we can be sure Landis meant was the latter. Which, as I've said, is fine by me and more than I'd hoped for. I don't need the mono, because I never use the mono on any of the bootleg versions I have (I'm also willing to bet that at least 75% of consumers don't even bother to find out about audio options and just play whatever the disc defaults to). I don't need completely accurate colors, because I kind of prefer the 90s home video colors anyway. I don't need the '77 crawl, because it's been Episode IV: A New Hope for the entire time I've been on this planet. What I do need is an official release of Star Wars with all the goofy distracting bullshit that's been added over the years removed. All of these features would be awesome in a prestige edition a la the Criterion collection, but I really think it's too much to ask for or expect before we know that that's what this is. If you're that bothered by the degree of accuracy, just think of it as another source for the projects that go on here. At the very, very least, folks like Harmy will finally be able to retire the GOUT. That alone is worth getting excited about.

Uuuuuuuuugh, that damn Boba Fett rumor. That one has always seemed particularly stupid. Von Sydow is decades too old.

Wasn't it established in The Clone Wars that clones eventually age faster as a side effect of the process that accelerates their growth into adults? There was even a clone who worked at the cloning facility that was prematurely aged.

Even though Boba was "unaltered", he could still have the aging issue.

I seem to remember a line that explicitly said Boba doesn't have growth acceleration when the Kaminoan guy is telling Obi-Wan about Jango. Could be wrong, though, and I'm really not up to popping in AOTC to find out right now.

side note, everyone in those movies is way too blasé about the growth acceleration thing. all those clones being sent into combat are like, ten years old or something, and there isn't even a whiff of the sense that this state of affairs is even ethicall shaky.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

The movies don't really have any choice about which canon to follow, though; they're bound to whatever the Lucasfilm Story Group decides, and they're most definitely going with the prequels. I honestly think it's a case of a subset of fans wildly overestimating Fett's importance, seeing there was still an actor whose character we didn't know anything about, and saying "well, obviously that has to be Boba Fett".

Would you want to see Anakin or Obi Wan in the new trilogy, portrayed by their PT actors?
Time

What about this idea that keeps coming up about using the Force to read an object's past? That's allegedly the basis of the long-rumored flashback scene in TFA, that Maz Kanata delves into the Skywalker lightsaber's history. If that's true, and if this Hayden thing is true, maybe he'll appear in this sort of flashback, pre-Vader.

Info: Anyone else considering TFA figures?
Time

I'm not willing to splurge on the Black Series stuff, but I've been snagging the 3.75" figures whenever I find myself with an extra few bucks. And I'm TAKING THEM OUT OF THE BOX, MAN, because to this day you can get a boxed Maul from the TPM release for a buck online, and posing them on my desk brings me more joy than just lining up the packages. I've got Rey, Finn, Kylo, Chewie, and a stormtrooper so far. Probably going to cool it on the TFA stuff after I find Poe and Phasma since I don't have any interest in the stormtrooper variants or random Jakku aliens, but going out and buying action figures for no reason as an adult (which is something I hadn't done prior to the aftermath of Force Friday) has proven enjoyable enough that I'll most likely get some OT stuff too (I let my cousin borrow all of my action figures from when I was an actual child about a decade ago and never saw them again, so it might be therapeutic to buy at least a Luke and a Vader now).

I'd rather not see Hayden Christensen in the ST, more because I'm hoping the ST isn't as Vader-centric as the rumor about him seems to suggest than because of any bad feelings about Hayden himself. Natalie Portman was just as bad as he was in the PT and she's amazing in other stuff, so I don't find it difficult to believe at all that Christensen would do all right with good direction. One of the things that excited me most when the ST was announced, though, was that we'd presumably finally be moving beyond Vader (given that, y'know, he's dead). Setting up Vader as an in-universe influence on Kylo Ren is a pretty cool way to tie this new stuff into the larger mythology, but actually having Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader literally present is too much. That said, if they come up with an anthology flick where Hayden makes sense, I'm all for it. Prequel fans deserve to be thrown a bone too, I'd just prefer it be thrown elsewhere in the timeline.

I really hope he isn't a Force ghost, though, because being forced to use the SE Jedi in marathons would be intolerable.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I really wouldn't be terribly ruffled by audio or color timing that isn't 100% accurate to the original theatrical release, provided neither is terrible on its own without regard to the standard of the original. I think from a preservation side it's important that that version exists somewhere, but I'm not particularly offended by the idea of a home release being mastered for, well, the home. I would hope that a completely accurate version would be made available at some point, but if the choice is between an official high def version within the next year where the color's not perfect and nothing at all, I'm taking the compromise. I've never been in love with the IB colors anyway, and besides, someone here is bound to regrade it with them as soon as those discs are on the market.
