I have to say, I'm extremely pleased to see it confirmed that the trailer music was not arranged by Williams. I thought it worked well enough for a trailer, and I adore the fact that they dusted off the love theme, but it would have been a serious bummer if those arrangements were indicative of the sound of the actual score. I'm not a fan of that kind of drum-heavy style at all.

While not as good as Williams's work, I liked the music. Gives me some hope for the non-Williams films like Rogue One, etc.

Oh, hearing something like this in an anthology film wouldn't bother me at all. I just don't want it in a mainline saga film.

Also, RE: how much the rest of the galaxy knows about what happened on the Death Star II, wasn't there a Legends novel where the Imperial remnant knew what happened and characterized Vader as a great traitor? Was that Shadows of Mindor? It doesn't look like TFA is going that route at all, but I always thought that was an interesting angle.

Unless everything we think we know about this film is completely off base, Luke's absence figures heavily into the plot. I'm totally fine with him barely being in it if it makes the story better. We've got two more of these on the way, I don't mind it if we don't get everything all at once.

Yeah, well Mark Hamill isn't getting any younger (and neither am I!) I may be dead before the next 2 come out! ;-)

Anyhow, good trailer. The trailers alone are already better movies than eps 1-3.

Mark put in a lot of effort getting into shape. That plus the time spent working on the film would seem to point away from a glorified cameo.

Unless they were secretly filming part of Episode 8 at the same time. ;)

That's a good point. I think Luke is definitely in this for more than the one scene MSW insists on, but it'll still be a big reveal towards the end of the film.

There is no way they'd put something in the trailer that would allow you to figure that out conclusively. They have to know that people are going to pick apart every frame of this. In fact, I think it's not unlikely that they put that in there to get us all to double down on "that's definitely where Han dies" and throw us off of something else. I'm not saying I think he lives, but I really can't believe thats what this shot is.

If the rumors are true, Solo dies.

Was there anything to substantiate those rumors though?  I always thought that was just over-speculation by super fans, based on Harrison Ford wanting to be killed off back during ESB/RoTJ, and his distaste for the series towards the end of the OT's production.

I think everybody involved in this production wants to see the original characters reunited at some point (hopefully many points) throughout this new trilogy.  It really doesn't seem like it is going to happen in this movie, although I admit that we have seen so little it is hard to tell.  But I don't see Han being killed off before having a chance to reunite with his old friend Luke.

This is exactly why I'm hoping against hope Han doesn't go out in this one. If he never has another scene with Luke i'll be really upset. I believe the only actual evidence for the rumor were some call sheets that made it look like Harrison Ford wasn't in the last part of the movie. I've got to hope that J.J. and Larry are trickier than that, though, because Han dying is one of the first places everyone's minds went before those call sheets even surfaced. I think it's possible this is a case of everyone seeing what they expect to see.

Here's a thought. If Rey needs to be told by Han that all the stories are true, that seems to rule out the possibility that she knew Luke before he went off the grid. I've seen a lot of speculation that she was training with him at some point between ROTJ and TFA, but if she doesn't know for sure that the Jedi are real, I'd say it might be time to retire that particular theory.

I really hope Rey wasn't crying for the reason I think she was crying.

I suspect she's crying over Max Von Sydow's character biting it. Hopefully.

Looks like it's snowing though :(

I know. I'm hoping that's not the case.

Notice the scene with Luke and R2 in this trailer. Just after it you see Kylo's shuttle landing in what looks like the same fiery environment. I doubt Luke is running around where Kylo is at. So right now I'm of the mind that its not a snow scene. Just a similar looking one. I could be very wrong on this, of course.

Maybe an injured/dead Finn? He is seen fighting Kylo at the end. Might have got his arm chopped off.

Someone on reddit played with the brightness and contrast in that shot a bit and now I'm fairly convinced she's crying over an injured Finn.

The new Star Wars comics - a general discussion thread
Time

I think that was probably Star Wars no. 7, which was a one shot about Obi-Wan set between the PT and OT. Shattered Empire has had nothing to do with Obi-Wan, Owen, or Beru so far. though the final issue is supposed to be pretty Luke-centric, so I guess that would be the place if they're going to go that route. I really don't see much room for it, though.

Whether or not it's a good idea narratively speaking to bring another superweapon into this, I do like that the Starkiller planet seems to be encased in some kind of energy field. Something that's bothered me since details about Starkiller started turning up is that if this thing is supposed to travel through interstellar space to get to new targets, the surface is going to be uninhabitably cold between systems, and then the whole planet's going to thaw out once you're back within a certain range of a star (not to mention that the whole idea behind the device is presumably to destroy the star it's orbiting, so it's going to be abruptly plunged into cold and darkness by design). All the parade grounds and airfields and stuff on the surface in the second teaser would be ludicrously impractical if the base didn't employ some means of climate control.

Of course, I guess we don't even know that it travels. It could stay in one spot and take out targets from a distance. Maybe it can fire an energy beam through hyperspace.

Theatrical poster:

I'm simultaneously dismayed by how much Starkiller Base seems to just be the Death Star III and more willing to buy the idea of a planetary weapon now that I see it. I'm guessing the alien next to R2-D2 is Maz Kanata and it looks like she's pretty different from the concept art we've seen. The absence of Luke seems to confirm that he's not going to have much screen time. The most interesting bit, though, is that Michael Arndt gets a writing credit. Also, the talk of a new logo being unveiled seems to have been false.

EDIT: here's the high res version for a better look at Maz

Speculation as to when opening night (not the special super-preview at select cities) tix for TFA will be sold be fandango?
Time

Anyone know if smaller theaters that don't do online ticketing are likely to start selling tickets this week? Neither of the two theaters closest to me are available on Fandango, and I'm wondering if I'll still be able to snag tickets for those immediately or if I should plan on going elsewhere and driving a bit longer come December. It's extremely important to me that I get to that first 7:00 pm showing on the 17th and I'd like to lock it down ASAP.

What if TFA is awful?
Time

Star Wars is many things to many people, and for many of us, it's just a few films from a few decades ago, and we love them dearly.  The rest is not really Star Wars at all and can DIAF for all we care.

I totally get that, but what I can't understand is the people who hold that opinion and yet still feel the need to dump all over everything else (not accusing you of that in particular, you're usually very even-handed from what I've seen). I love the Beatles. I also think everything Paul McCartney's put out in the last 35 years or so is complete garbage. I have no interest in moaning about how awful Paul McCartney is now, though. Nobody's forcing me to listen to those albums he released through Starbucks, and there's nothing he can do now that can make the stuff he did in the 60's any less brilliant, so I'm happy to go about my business as if that stuff didn't exist. I think a lot of people feel this way about a lot of things, musicians especially. There's a subset of Star Wars fans, though, who seem to become violently angry at the idea that anyone would have the gall to try to continue the franchise past the arbitrary endpoint they privately drew before The Phantom Menace, or after the Thrawn trilogy, or after Empire, or Splinter of the Mind's Eye. If you're not considering it a part of your Star Wars anyway, no one needs to know how terrible you know TFA is going to be. I think everyone would be better off if these people would stop getting themselves upset over something they've already decided not to recognize and allow everyone else to enjoy a version of the franchise that isn't dead.
