Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * <strong>SPOILER THREAD</strong> *
Time

The Max von Sydow thing confuses me. All signs point to his character being killed in the raid pretty much right off the bat, but if that’s the case, why cast such a legendary actor for two scenes? Maybe the raid takes place a little later than we think and there’s some stuff between him and Rey before Poe shows up. That way his death could echo Owen’s and Beru’s.

There’s a new interview with J.J. in Wired: http://www.wired.com/2015/11/star-wars-force-awakens-jj-abrams-interview

Pretty good read so far. A lot of stuff in there about the way the OT is structured and how VII fits into the continuum.

EDIT: Whoa dang, there’s also a high quality still of the Knights of Ren shot from the trailer.

MSW has a writeup this morning about why it’s false. The item in question is being sold by a third party with fulfillment by Amazon, so none of the copy actually comes from Amazon. Whoever wrote the description also completely ignores the style guide and calls the movie “Star Wars VII Force Awakens” by “Lucas Films ltd”. No way that came through official channels.

It looks like Stephen Colbert was right about Kylo’s saber.

EDIT: or not, it looked like there was a cutaway in top of the cross guard emitters that showed the side blades connecting to the main one in the video but in the stills I think that’s just the reflection of the main blade.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised or dismayed if Han and Leia aren’t romantically involved at the start of the film. I would hope that they never really got over each other and eventually rekindle their romance (if they both live long enough), but I almost think I’d prefer it if they haven’t communicated in years or decades. Giving that relationship a conflict to struggle with and hopefully overcome is much more interesting than having them as a functional couple from the outset.

The Force Awakens 3D vs. 2D
Time

I was actually aware of the 70mm screenings, but as it stands I’m still several states away from the nearest theater listed as having it. Let’s hope they end up expanding that after all. But yeah, I meant apart from the 70mm. There’s a theater reasonably close to me listed for screenings in the new Laser system, but I believe that’s 3D as well.

I’ve got 2D tickets for the first showing. I do want to see it in IMAX eventually, and unless there’s plans for a 2D IMAX version that I haven’t heard about, I guess I don’t have a choice but to go with 3D there. I avoid 3D whenever I can; I don’t like the effect enough to offset the pain in the ass factor inherent in wearing 3D glasses over my actual glasses.

I’d actually like to see something set in the prequel era. I think a well-written and competently directed film tied into the PT could do a lot to redeem that section of the timeline.

As far as Boba Fett goes, recent rumors about Michael B. Jordan being up for a part got me thinking about a neat scenario that I hope they use. In Aftermath, there’s an interlude where a character on Tatooine tries to buy a set of Mandalorian armor heavily implied to be Fett’s from the Jawas. I think it would be cool if Jordan played a new character who ends up with the armor and starts impersonating Fett, thinking like everyone else that he’s dead. He isn’t, of course, and either A.) he’s not wild about Jordan’s character using his reputation and hunts him down or B.) he develops some kind of elaborate plot that hinges on the fact that Jordan’s posing as him. The rumor itself is probably bogus, but if not, I think this is a good direction to take it in.

That’s a pretty weird concept for a Boba Fett movie. Maybe Michael B Jordan is just playing a new character in the movie. Also, I think the prequels are too janky to be fixed. How do you explain midichlorians?

You wouldn’t, you’d just ignore it. There are plenty of stories to be told in that era where there would never even be any reason to mention midichlorians. In fact, since the prequels were already almost entirely focused on the Jedi, I think chances are if they went that route it would follow someone other than the Force users. The criminal underworld, maybe, or some other aspect of the war. It might even be kind of cool to have an Indiana Jones kind of thing set around or just before the time of TPM where characters find out about something that happened much earlier. Maybe that’s how you re-canonize some of the stuff that worked from Darth Bane and/or KOTOR. I’m rambling at this point, but I’m just super curious what a movie set during the Clone Wars or before with real sets and practical creatures and a sane script would look like. Not only that, I think that’s a good era for world-building stuff that’s maybe interesting but only tangentially linked to the main saga, since I’m so much less invested in the story of the prequels.

I am almost positive that he did not use Battle of Endor footage, and the extended destruction scene was done as a joke. And since he didn’t make any plot changes, I don’t see any difference between showing the SE and Adywan’s version, except that the latter is better.

I get where you’re coming from, though.

I guess it’s only the one shot. As I’ve said, I’ve never sat down and watched it all the way through, but I’ve seen enough to know it isn’t for me. I dig the color fixes, but the changes are just way too goddamn much.

I still haven’t watched it front to back, but the extended Alderaan destruction scene that I saw included a cut to Jar Jar and Bail Organa on the surface. If that’s something someone other than Ady added at some point, I apologize for my ignorance.

Look, I get that it’s an impressive achievement for an amateur to pull off, and I guess I can sort of see how it might appeal to others, and if I can get on board with nothing else I appreciate the hell out of the color correction. I just can’t agree with using a fan edit to introduce someone to the movie, especially one that tries so hard to turn it up to 11.

It’s really not though. I don’t understand why Lucas catches shit for stuffing the thing with unnecessary effects tweaks but when Adywan does it he’s a genius.

This probably isn’t the place to debate (and it’s a debate that’s been had many times before), but Lucas “catches shit” because he suppressed the original versions. This site pretty much exists because of that. If he just made the special edition in addition to the theatricals, no one here would care. As is, we have every right to be angry that the official versions have CGI bullshit.

And that’s not to mention the fact that most of Ady’s changes are simply fixing continuity errors and effects gaffes while Lucas added truly idiotic stuff like a poorly animated dinosaur covering THE ENTIRE frame for a solid second or two.

I stated that poorly, I know that that’s exactly why. But I don’t see why blinking Greedo and inserting shots from the Battle of Endor into the battle of Yavin and awkwardly shoehorning in a Jar Jar death scene are seen as somehow not as dumb.

The reason there’s no similar community trash-talking Paul McCartney’s albums (I agree, BTW), is that good-quality recordings of the Beatles that people love are widely available, so there’s no community of similarly frustrated Beatles fans to do it.

“Live and Let Die” by Wings was fantastic what are you talking about?

you used to say… Live and Let Live

you know you did, you know you did, you know you diiiieed

What about Rupert and the frog song anyone?

Oh I’m very pro-“Live and Let Die”. I like most of his 70s output well enough, it’s the 80s when things go off the rails for me.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

This may belong in the tech tips section since it's a calibration question, but it relates specifically to the Despecialized Edition, so I figured maybe someone here has experienced the same issue. I've got two TVs that I watch movies on, a Samsung 1080p 50" LED smart tv in the living room and a Samsung 720p 42" plasma in the basement (this is where the bulk of my Star Wars viewing occurs out of courtesy to the family). The DE looks spectacular on the LED display, but on the plasma the seams between the different elements are super obvious and distracting. Does the plasma just produce an intrinsically harsher image, or might there be a fix for this in the screen settings? I'm currently using this guy's settings, and I've made a blu ray from the MKV.

<strong>STAR WARS: REBELS</strong> (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

I was really pleased to see the Interdictor in the trailer. It alleviated some of the disappointment brought on by the fact that they're doubling down on the stupid inquisitor lightsaber. How many season 2 episodes have actually aired at this point? I saw the hour-long one over the summer and the premiere with the clones, and I know there was another clone-heavy one last night, but I've seen a lot of talk about the new inquisitors like they've been around for a bit. Is this on a different release schedule elsewhere?
