Favorite Beer

I honestly usually just go for whatever the Wachusett seasonal is. Does anyone here have Wachusett? They’re local, but they’re cheap. I have no idea what their range is; I’ve seen it as far afield as Ithaca, NY (I live in central MA). Honestly, I like beer, but I can’t nerd out about it like a lot of my friends (they can’t go two weeks without visiting a craft brewery). I’m much more likely to splurge on a whiskey drink and then knock back Yeungling for the rest of the night.

HAN SOLO: The Redemption That Saved The Galaxy
Time

I was doing a Star Wars comics podcast with a few buddies for about six months last year (we got biblically behind the release schedule, but we’re hoping to retool the format and relaunch it some time in the coming weeks, but who knows), and at a certain point we got to discussing how crazy Tatooine’s stand your ground laws must be. Only tangentially related, but it’s always fun to apply real-world thinking to this kind of thing.

Movies generally considered "bad" that you like.
Time

Dune. Prometheus. Maybe Into Darkness, but I haven’t seen it in two years, so who knows. Do people think Barbarella is bad? Because I really like Barbarella. Wet Hot American Summer has a terrible Rotten Tomatoes score, but I can’t get my head around anyone not loving that movie. The Chronicles of Riddick is definitely considered a stinker, right? How do we feel about Conan the Barbarian? I liked The Woman in Black, too, as well as every Shyamalan movie through Lady in the Water. If you can’t tell, my tolerance for middling scifi/fantasy is much higher than other genres. I can’t think of any universally loathed indie dramedies or crime procedurals that I dug.

What didn't you like about TFA? SPOILERS

Damn you guys are crazy. Glad I stepped out of this thread long ago.

Same. I’ve mainly just been popping in hoping for a golden opportunity to post this:

but deciding against it every time because getting involved in one of these huge debates myself is the last thing meesa wants.

Desplat is quite versatile so while he can do Williams’s style (as in the last two Potter films) he can also do otherwise. I’m sort of hoping for a classical score but with a very different tone than we’re used to from Star Wars (darker, grittier, more militaristic). In terms of old themes returning, I’d LOVE to hear the old Imperial Motif again (from 77) and the Death Star motif, and of course a healthy dose of the Rebel fanfare. I don’t think we need to hear the Imperial March but I’m sure we will. Any other themes should be off limits (except maybe the main title).

I don’t think there should be a crawl, at least not like the one we’re used to. That should be reserved for the Episodes. “A long time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away” should be required for every Star Wars film, however.

Oh man, bringing back the Imperial motif never even occurred to me. It seems like ever since Williams penned the March everyone’s forgotten about it. Now I’m really hoping that happens.

This Desplat Harry Potter track actually reminds me of “Attack on Jakku” from the TFA score more than anything else. I’m a huge defender of the TFA score, but I’d hoped going to someone other than Williams for the Anthology films would mean more of a departure from the norm. Ah, well. I have a hard time complaining about such convincing Williams-esque music.

Side note, I’d like to see whoever scored the Neil Degrasse-Tyson Cosmos get a crack at Star Wars. That was some of the best fake Williams I’ve ever heard, with a dash of Horner-era Trek.

Has anybody heard anything about the music in Rogue One? Will it ‘sound like’ a Star Wars film or will they try something new?

It stuck me this morning that if they are going to be making lots of these anthology films, the classic Star Wars music could get a bit… old. But then if they don’t use it, it could be a bit… weird.

Thoughts?

All I know is that Alexandre Desplat is doing the score. The only work of his that I can recall without looking up is The Grand Budapest Hotel. I actually loved that score, but that was all central European folk music, so there’s no way that’s any indication of what his Star Wars will sound like.

Info Wanted: Unaltered Star Trek TOS in HD? does an HD version of the unaltered original Star Trek series even officially exist?

I’m not sure any version of TOS is airing on U.S. tv right now. I know TNG was running the SD versions of TNG last year when the channel was briefly unscrambled on my system. Maybe something will happen for the 50th anniversary? CBS seems to think streaming is where the money is now though.

BBC America has been running TNG in HD recently.

Star Wars theatrical versions not coming in 2015
Time

This seems as good a place as any to ask, so I will. Even if Lucasfilm butchered the original negatives to make the SE, shouldn’t second generation internegatives exist somewhere? I know those wouldn’t have the same amount of detail as the true negative, but wouldn’t those be good enough for a standard Blu-ray? I shot a little bit of 16mm in school and never did anything with it beyond the work prints, but my understanding was that you want to manipulate the original negative as little as possible. Surely copies were made for the purpose of generating release prints?

Wanted: Looking for less frequently-seen ROTJ posters
Time

Hey all,

For a long time now, I’ve had this set of theatrical posters on my wall, and all has been well:

Today, though, my aunt surprised me with these:

Alt text

Now, if it were just one or the other, I’d hang it up in a different room and there would be no issue, but with both of them the set sort of begs to be completed. I don’t want to double up on the Jedi poster I’ve already got, and I’d like something busier than the lightsaber teaser poster to better match the other two. Does anyone know if this exists in a vertical orientation?

Alt text

Other than that, the only other one I know of is the one with the Death Star II in the middle and everyone’s heads at the bottom, and that poster is ugly as sin. Does anyone know of any other versions that might suit my purposes?

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

What the hell kind of ranking system is 7-13? Also, a lot of folks have done complete rankings in the “Rate TFA” thread. But meh, what the hell, I’ll do it.

 1. The Empire Strikes Back
 2. Star Wars/A New Hope
 3. The Force Awakens
 4. Return of the Jedi
 5. The Phantom Menace
 6. Revenge of the Sith
 7. Attack of the Clones

Of course, I haven’t lived with TFA nearly long enough to be sure about its placement yet, but (as I’ve said elsewhere) I think that for all its faults, its spark and vitality give it an edge over ROTJ. And ROTS and AOTC are so close that the distinction is pretty meaningless, except AOTC had the droid factory scene and subsequent 3PO/battle droid mashup debacle (which I consider to be the point when GL completely abandoned all pretense of even trying to make proper Star Wars movies), so it gets the bottom slot officially.

Hmmm. Well, for now I think I’m going to pick up the blu-ray and live with the unrestored picture and mono sound, but if anyone feels like doing a cleanup and multiple audio tracks, that’s something I’d certainly be interested to see. I’d start tinkering with it myself, but that kind of restoration work is beyond me.

The idea of seamless branching for this sort of thing on an official release seemed so unlikely to me as a Star Wars fan that it never even occurred to me that it might be the case. A little googling confirms that that is in fact true, thank you. I’ll let this thread sink into oblivion now.
