TFA: Why I don't think Rey is a Merry Sue
Time

Better than Luke and any other character in the SW universe at her same age, “because reasons”, without explaination. Considering she defeated an almost complete dark Jedi on her own, she probably doesn’t even need to train with Luke 😄

A.) We’ve got two more of these. I am absolutely sure we’ll get an explanation in the coming installments. I think when these are on video sitting next to each other of everyone’s shelves and you can watch one right after the other, people aren’t going to be bothered by the ambiguity here, and in fact may come to appreciate it.

B.) We never get any explicit indication of how far along in his training Kylo Ren is. The only reasons I’ve come across for assuming he’s the man are 1.) he did that trick with the blaster bolt, and that kicked ass, so he must be amazing, and 2.) he wiped out Luke’s other students. That’s not a great indicator either because we have no idea how far along in the training they were, and in fact I have a theory that Kylo was able to off them all so easily because he was the only one with a lightsaber (I think Luke hadn’t yet taught his students to build them and that Snoke showed Kylo as part of his seduction, but this is all speculation). Anyway, other than that, he doesn’t face another Force user until Rey shows up. Yeah, he’s comes off as powerful in the first half of the film, but he’s essentially just bullying non-Force users. He’s a medium-sized fish in a small pond and he’s been that way for years. I have no trouble believing that when the shit truly hits the fan he kind of sucks at Jedi stuff.

Side note, it’s nice to get a chance to actually talk about things that happened in the movie without it getting bogged down by sweeping hyperbolic statements about the film’s overall quality. Let’s try to keep this up.

Couldn’t it be that -GASP- the character is supposed to be more powerful than Luke? Everyone’s treating this like they failed to portray a character on roughly ANH-era Luke’s level believably, but since when is that the cap on Force aptitude in this universe? Maybe Rey just does better than Luke because she is better than Luke.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1

While we’re still waiting on the full-sized MKV, it might be worth looking into free media server software like Plex and Serviio. I’ve been using Plex to look at the work print and I’ve been very pleased. When the higher quality version is available I’m definitely going to be putting it on a disc, but streaming the 6 GB version has been more than fine.

Case inserts with 50-scene chapter index?
Time

Hey guys, I’m planning on making a few sets of the DE for friends and family once ROTJ 2.0 is released (don’t worry, they all own the official releases), and I was wondering if anyone’s done inserts with the 50-scene chapter index used on the 2.x DE releases and dark_jedi’s theatrical v 3.0. I’ve seen a lot of lovely inserts in the general DVD art thread, but I’m having trouble tracking down versions that match the chapters on the DE discs. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Alright, here are the covers, finished, without the “special features” section:

I decided against the Special Features section because it didn’t quite look right, plus it wasn’t on the VHS sleeve anyway.  It wouldn’t be hard for someone to add if they wanted to.

Here’s the RapidShare download link - one ZIP file containing the full-res JPEGs of all three covers:

<p style=“padding: 0px; margin-bottom: 3px; margin-top: 3px; font-size: 9pt;”>I’ll post a similar link for my Indiana Jones covers if anyone’s interested (you can find the “thumbnails” for those on page 150).

Can we get a reup of these? I was wanting to switch my Faces covers with something else and I like the retro feel of these.

Anyone still have these?

I think that the people who critique RotJ for Ewoks just have latent teddy-bear issues or something, and that their gripes say something about only them, and not the movie.

It says that we understand there’s no way a bunch of Ewoks should be able to take down an entire Legion of the Emperor’s best troops.

I love me some ROTJ, but I can’t get down with the idea that the lightsaber duel is better than the one in ESB. That’s the finest fight choreography in the entire saga, particularly the lead up to the “I am your father” bombshell right after the Falcon escapes.

I also find that the Ewoks bother me a lot less now at age 26 than they did ten years or so ago. I think the big turning point was realizing that they totally eat people.

I have no problem believing Anakin found the parts from a broken down protocol droid lying around Watto’s digs and put it back together. I don’t think we were ever meant to think he machined the parts himself or anything like that.

Well, I’m fine with Anakin being able to assemble a droid. It’s the fact that C3PO and Anakin/Vader are somehow “relatives”, that they know each other. It always bothered me to no end since I was a kid 😄

Didn’t he speak like that on Bespin too, when he felt the presence of another R2 unit, though?

As much as I hate to admit it, someone pointed out to me recently that if you watch them in chronological order, Anakin building 3PO isn’t a problem at all. This kid makes a droid, and then it stays with his gang for the rest of the movies. It only seems stupid when you already know 3PO before you see TPM.

As for the ESB thing, there’s a difference between him thinking out loud (ESB) and doing schticky commentary about what’s happening in real time (AOTC).

I have no problem believing Anakin found the parts from a broken down protocol droid lying around Watto’s digs and put it back together. I don’t think we were ever meant to think he machined the parts himself or anything like that. As for blowing up the ship, that was dumb, but the movie’s been hitting us over the head with how inept the forces of the Trade Federation are for two hours by that point, so it isn’t a huge leap. C-3PO’s barrage of one-liners spoken to no one, the sudden appearance of R2-D2’s rockets, and the notion that every single droid head is totally interchangeable coming in the span of five minutes are all much harder for me to swallow.

I rank TPM above the other two because in the grand scheme of things it’s mostly harmless. It’s got some profoundly irritating characters, and it’s super boring, but it doesn’t screw up the fabric of Star Wars as much as the AOTC and ROTS. The droid factory on Geonosis is the event horizon for those films’ salvageability, as far as I’m concerned.

By the way, I hereby withdraw all previous complaints about the color in 2.5. I redid the settings on my TV last night, and it turns out I’ve had the warmth up waaaaaaaaay too goddamn high for the past however-long-it’s-been-since-I-played-with-settings. I kicked it back to a neutral level and now 2.5 looks gorgeous.

Incidentally, Empire 2.0 still looked great with the crazy warmth. That might have been why I assumed the problem was with Star Wars 2.5 and not my hardware.
