Ranking the Star Wars Soundtracks
Time

^I agree with all of your TFA standouts, but I’ve got a few more that I tend not to skip.

“Attack on the Jakku Village” - I’m not overfond of the track as a whole, but the moment when Kylo Ren’s motif first kicks in makes it worthwhile.

“I Can Fly Anything” - I like this one mostly because of the strong visual associations I have with the TIE escape scene.

“The Abduction” - Rey’s theme coming in at the end was one of my favorite musical moments in the film.

“Han & Leia” - The love theme from ESB might be my favorite piece of Star Wars music overall, so I’m a sucker for any time it shows up on the TFA soundtrack.

“March of the Resistance” - I actually like this one because it’s reminiscent of Indy. It’s also got some of the most sophisticated orchestration I’ve ever heard from Williams; the bit in the middle with the staggered strings, horns and flutes gives me a really strong and very welcome Beethoven vibe.

chapterdb.org has what you need. 😃

I saw these the other day and scrubbed around in the MKV to see if they were correct, and most of them are off by the better part of a minute. I guess it’s close enough, but I’d hoped someone had figured out a list for this particular release.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

ESB is my favorite Star Wars movie, because it’s the most artfully made film of the bunch and contains the most crucial parts of the overall mythology and the highest drama, but if we’re trying to decide which is the “greater film” (which is a stupid thing to worry about), it has the major disadvantage of being unable to function on its own. SW works as its own self-contained story, as the first act in a trilogy, and as a middle chapter in the overall saga, whereas ESB by design can’t be anything other than Act II.

It would also be a huge mistake to undervalue the fact that SW created that whole world. Sure, ESB expanded on it beautifully, but the bulk of the true invention is in that first film.

Just out of curiosity (I would never buy this in a million years…), is there going to be a 3D BD release? If this movie doesn’t get one, I can’t imagine what would anymore. It’s really amazing what a dud the 3D-push was.

Haven’t heard anything at all about one. I know exactly one person with a 3D TV, so it’s not surprising.

Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)
Time

This isn’t an urgent concern at all, but I was wondering: since this is now the official 2.6 release, is there an SD DVD-5 on the way? I’m set with the high def version, but I’ve got a handful friends without blu-ray players who love the shit out of Despecialized. Would be nice to share the update with them.

Here’s the packaging:

Standard Blu-Ray and DVD -

Target exclusive cover -

Wal-Mart exclusive cover -

Best Buy exclusive steelbook -

When the Wal-Mart packaging leaked a week or so ago I worried a little that maybe I should have waited to see what all the alternate covers looked like before I preordered my Blu-Ray on Amazon, but luckily I find the standard version the most attractive.

Peter Mayhew Tweeting Star Wars "Journal of the Whills" script. "Big announcement" to follow...
Time

DominicCobb said:

I’ve been thinking for awhile that an OOT release in 2017 is inevitable, and I still think that’s the case, but I don’t think the way they’d announce it is through Peter Mayhew’s twitter feed.

It’s possible that it won’t actually be Mayhew’s announcement. It might be he just knows when Disney plans to announce it and is doing his own goofy thing on Twitter to coincide with it. My bet (assuming it actually is an OUT release) is that Disney does its own press release and Mayhew tweets a link to it when he gets to the end of the script.

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

I haven’t read the books (yet), but “Lensman” seems to refer to in-universe technology rather than anything in the real world. From the Wikipedia summary of the second Lensman book (which is rather confusingly titled First Lensman):

“. . . He is guided by one of his trusted subordinates to Arisia, a previously unapproachable planet, where he is greeted by a benevolent and telepathic Arisian who presents him with a “Lens”. The Lens is a device that can only be made by the Arisians and that can be worn only by the person that it is exclusively attuned to. It gives its wearer the ability to communicate telepathically with any being or animal with a mind, as well as other powers. The Lens underlies all the remaining stories in the series. Samms is charged with locating all “Lens worthy” individuals and directing them to Arisia to have their own Lens bestowed upon them.”

The new 35mm stuff looks great by the way. I scrubbed around a bit after giving up on trying to get this encode onto a BD-25 with the lossless audio tracks, and all the new shots were noticeable improvements and blended really well with the surrounding material. I’ll be waiting for the MKV with the ANH crawl, but no rush. Having watched the trilogy through two or three times in the last few weeks with all these new versions coming out, I think I’m going to hold off on watching this one all the way through until the weekend before the TFA Blu-ray comes out. I guess you could call it a tolerance break.

Not sure if this will work the way I want it to, but I just tossed the M2TS files for my preferred crawl and the rest of the movie and the DTS-HD tracks from Harmy’s 2.5 into TSMuxer. I’ll let you guys know if it worked in 20 minutes or so.

EDIT: no dice.

EDIT2: Just discovered the “join” function. Commencing attempt 2.

EDIT3: That worked just fine.

EDIT4: Ugh, still too big to fit on a disc. Looks like I’m waiting for the MKV after all.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

Was I the only one who found Ingruber’s youtube impressions of Han Solo to be profoundly off putting? Maybe it’s just that posting video of yourself imitating Harrison Ford is pretty much the least Harrison Ford move I can think of. I know it’s dumb to judge the guy based on a ninety second webcam video, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. When I see that, I think “this guy’s really worked on his Harrison Ford pose” rather than “this guy genuinely evokes Harrison Ford”.
