4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I’m only at the sand people attack, so I can’t speak to the Greedo alterations, but so far I think I kind of like the color? It’s not gonna please anyone who’s dead set on it looking like a technicolor print, but as a version that will play more seamlessly with the ST, it’s kind of nice. I glanced at AOTC as well just to see how the upscale went and that looked a bit more consistent too. I think uniformity across trilogies was likely a goal here, and truth be told I don’t hate it. I’ll always have my bootlegs, after all.

EDIT: I laughed out loud at the Greedo shot.

Star Wars Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

Racer Revenge has been available in the Playstation store for a while. I snagged it last year and played the first couple races, but really I’d have preferred a port of the original, since that’s the one that I played the hell out of as a kid.

To be “that guy” and bring it back to tabletop again, has anyone screwed around with Fantasy Flight’s pen and paper RPG? I scored two of the three core rulebooks on sale a little while ago and would like to try to run a game for my D&D group; I’m wondering if there’s anyone with experience here that I could DM about it with.

This guy has done a pretty comprehensive video on some of the more negative, maybe even toxic elements, of click bait fandom, especially about The Last Jedi:

I am sure not everyone will agree with it (and I don’t fully), but it is worth posting here for those that wish to see an alternative take, on some of the more unjust or outlandish criticism of modern Star Wars, and also how some within also twist and contort what is, or has, actually being said by people working on Star Wars or at Lucas film, to try and prove or further their view or agenda.

Ugh, I feel bad for that one dude with the “Super Dad” plaque’s kid.

4K restoration on Star Wars

Blu-ray.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and several other retailers are listing new Blu-ray releases of all existing Star Wars movies (packaged individually, and not in 4K) for September 22, with a list price of $34.99 each. The runtime on the listing for ANH suggests that it’s the SE, but I suppose a GOUT bonus disc situation is possible. With a list price that high, I can’t imagine these are just repackaged 2011 discs without any additional content, but with the saga set all but confirmed for next year, I don’t know what else this could be.

EDIT: Actually, looking at the individual listings, I’m thinking these are probably just the 2011 discs with digital copies included, and probably new matching packaging. I’d love to be wrong though.

Having sat with it for a while and talked about it a bunch I’m coming around. I think my dislike for the title and my frustration with how light on actual content the panel was colored my perception of the rest of it. The sins of the marketing campaign are not necessarily the sins of the movie, and there’s enough to like in that trailer that of course i’m on board.

There’s a boatload of concept art in the Art of The Force Awakens book that would suggest it’s the Death Star II, assuming they used that discarded storyline from the earlier film as a jumping off point. I’d post some of it if I was on my laptop instead of my phone. Maybe later, unless someone else does it first.

Could the planet in the trailer be Endor proper instead of the sanctuary moon? I’ve always assumed Endor was a gas giant, but I don’t think there’s currently anything in the cannon to support or refute that.

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that part of the plot will involve our heroes racing against Kylo and the Knights of Ren to find some sort of Emperor-related macguffin. Maybe some trap that Palestine set up decades ago with an especially long fuse goes off and everyone believes there’s some means of stopping and/or controlling it somewhere in the Death Star II wreckage.

(That’s my theory as long as we’re limiting speculation to the Death Stars we’ve already seen, that is. I remember a couple more kicking around in Legends, and I wouldn’t be gobsmacked to find out there was a heretofore unseen prototype left over in canon too)

Speculation…

Shmi “There was no father. I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him. I can’t explain what happened.”

Palpatine using abilities “some consider to be unnatural” conjured this child of the force within Shmi (a random slave of no importance). Palpatine is secretly Anakin Skywalker’s father (and acts like it throughout the PT).

Palpatine - having survived his fall down the Death Star chasm (much like Luke survived the Cloud City chasm - it rhymes!) used those same abilities to create Rey, again within a random junker of no importance. Palpatine is Rey father, she’s of the same line.

Seems at least possible?

Rey would have only been conceived a decade or so after the Battle of Endor. I think it’s more likely that Palpatine won’t literally appear but rather that our heroes will be dealing with some kind of contingency plan he set up before he died. After all, the books and comics have been dropping breadcrumbs to that effect since Shattered Empire and the Aftermath trilogy.

Anyway, I hate the title and I’m more confused by the trailer than anything. JJ’s doing his old gleefully cryptic schtick again, and I feel like I still just don’t have enough to go on to make any kind of judgement beyond “nice to see Billy Dee flying the Falcon again” or “Finn’s new costume is cool”. Would it kill Abrams/Kennedy to have given a three-sentence summary at the panel so that I could have some vague idea of what the stakes are here?

Has anyone been to any of those live orchestra screenings recently? I’m going to one of ANH in Boston next month, and I’m wondering if it’ll be the same old Lowry master or something else, like the version shown at the Alamo marathon a little while back that was purportedly a hybrid of the long-teased new master with the CGI shots from the Lowry. I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but the last time I went to one of these it was Amadeus, and they showed a previously-unknown HD version of the theatrical cut for that, so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see something new.
