What are you reading?
Time

This thread seems to always get bumped when I’m reading N.K. Jemisin. I’m now reading the first part of her Dreamblood duology, called The Killing Moon. It’s a lot more formally straightforward than The Broken Earth was, so it might be a better entry point to her work if TBE seems a little far-out. It’s a fantasy based in an ancient Egyptian-inspired world, which is a refreshing angle after having read so much stuff set in versions of medieval Europe. It’s focused a lot more on political intrigue than the other series as well; if you’re a fan of the King’s Landing court stuff in ASoIaF, you should check this out.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I’ll get ‘em. The “voting with your wallet” angle seems kind of moot with 4k77 in circulation; I’ve got two of the movies in near enough perfect quality (with the last one on the way) that I don’t much care anymore if they’re released officially. And I’m a lot more agnostic about the various cuts than most here anyway; I grew up on the SE and find myself revisiting it every fifth or sixth watch or so. As long as these discs don’t have the awful color issues that the blu-ray did, i’m sure I’ll get some use out of them.

Off the top of my head I think we’d probably start with Edge of the Empire, but I’d have to poll the gang to be sure. We do indeed play 5e, so if that’s an easy jump I’ll probably go for it at some point. I’ve actually got a few of the books from the WEG game that I snagged used from a comic shop, but given that not everyone in my group is a lifelong Star Wars diehard who’s going to be delighted just to see stuff from The Truce at Bakura or Dark Empire statted out, I figure it’s probably better to go with the game that’s based on a more current iteration of the canon. In any case, thanks a bunch for the resources!

Anyone have any experience with the current pen and paper RPG(s)? I’ve been considering picking up one or all of the core books and giving it a whirl with my D&D group. The way they’ve organized things is a little strange, though. Rather than setting it up like D&D, where the core books are game master’s guide, a player handbook, and a sourcebook (the Monster Manual), they organize it thematically. Edge of the Empire is scoundrels, Age of Rebellion is military, and Force and Destiny is Jedi stuff. The upside is you can play with just one of the core books, but the downside is that all the different stats and mechanics are in three different places. Anyway, I’m just wondering if anyone here’s played it and if it’s worth the time investment of learning a new system.

All Things Star Trek
Time

I finally started Discovery this week and I’m nine episodes into the first season. I’ve got to say, I don’t get what all the hand-wringing is about. Sure, it’s got some tone issues, but show me the Trek other than TOS that wasn’t kind of wonky this early in its run (I’ve seen exactly none of Voyager or Enterprise, so if either of those are spectacular from the jump, I’m not aware). In any event, I am much more interested in continuing to follow this than I was at episode 9 of TNG, which is more than enough for me to continue to give it the benefit of the doubt for now. I’m really looking forward to catching up and seeing Pike’s Enterprise.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Yeah, I don’t think I know a single person who even owns a 3D TV. Might have been cool to see those 3D versions theatrically, but I really don’t have any interest in watching them in my living room.

Anyway, I was sure we’d at least get TFA and R1 in UHD for Christmas since there was no new movie in theaters, even if the OT was a long shot. Since that came and went, I’m not expecting anything before IX comes out on disc. Hopefully they’ll do it so that I won’t have to re-buy too much. Be a shame if IX came out in a steel book that matched TLJ but then three months down the road we find out that the only way to get TFA in 4K is in a boxed set. I might hold out on the disc for the first time and just go digital for IX if we haven’t heard by then what’s going on with TFA.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

I rewatched about half of the films since the last time I posted in this thread and I think I’ve arrived at my definitive ranking until IX comes out.

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. The Last Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Return of the Jedi
  6. Solo
  7. Rogue One
  8. The Phantom Menace
  9. Attack of the Clones
  10. Revenge of the Sith

The PT is still kind of a toss-up, but the middle part of the list seems to have stabilized for me.

Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in the Star Wars Movies

Star Wars: Alec Guinness
The Empire Strikes Back: Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher
Return of the Jedi: Mark Hamill
The Force Awakens: Harrison Ford and Daisy Ridley
Rogue One: Ben Mendelsohn
The Last Jedi: Mark Hamill and Adam Driver
Solo: Alden Ehrenreich

I’d add Alan Tudyk for Rogue One, but otherwise this is exactly what I was about to say. As far as the PT goes, Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor were the only actors who were any good. I guess Christopher Lee gets an asterisk since he did as good a job as anyone could ask for given the fact that he had nothing to work with, but when I think about acting in the PT, Ewan’s really the one who stands out. I suppose Ian McDiarmid was good for a while too, but he’s so god awful after going full Emperor in the back half of ROTS that I hesitate to praise what came before.

Is Romero’s Dawn of the Dead completely out of print? I was thinking about selling my DVD for a blu-ray, but not only does it seem like there’s no blu-ray that matches the DVD, it doesn’t even seem like the blu-ray’s available?

I think I read somewhere that the remastered Dario Argento cut is still in print in Italy, and it includes the theatrical cut as a special feature. No idea how true that is; the region was a deal breaker for me so I stopped following that lead. Might be worth looking into, though. Maybe someone here with the proper setup could rip it to an MKV.

Last movie seen
Time

This week I watched…

High And Low (dir. Akira Kurosawa, 1963)
Shoot The Piano Player (dir. Francois Truffaut, 1960)
Judex (dir. Georges Franju, 1963)
The Princess Bride (dir. Rob Reiner, 1987)
This Is Spinal Tap (dir. Rob Reiner, 1984)
Gimme Shelter (dir. Albert & David Maysles, 1970)

Great stuff across the board. Judex deserves special mention for being totally crazypants. The only other Franju film I’ve seen is Eyes Without A Face, but between those two I’m feeling motivated to look into everything he ever did.

The Mandalorian - Star Wars Live action TV series : <strong>NO SPOILERS</strong>
Time

Variety is reporting that the lead character will be played by Pedro Pascal.

I loved him on Game of Thrones, so I’m pretty happy about this. The fact that they’ve already been shooting for weeks and they’re just making this deal now makes me think this is probably more of an ensemble piece than they’ve been letting on, though.
