HELP! New smart TV isn't playing nice with receiver
Time

Hello all,

Last night I bought a new TV and I’m having trouble getting it to talk to my receiver. The TV is a Samsung UN48J5201, and the receiver is a Yamaha from the RX line (I don’t remember which offhand and don’t have an easy means of finding out at the moment). Everything is working fine for the most part, but I can’t get any audio for the smart TV apps.

I didn’t think the TV was ARC capable because neither HDMI port was labeled as such, but under the TV’s sound settings there’s a “receiver” option that becomes available when I enable ARC on the receiver. When I select this and put the receiver on the proper input, though, none of the speaker icons on the receiver’s display are lit up, and I still get no audio.

I figured this must mean the TV isn’t ARC ready after all in spite of the “receiver” option under the sound settings, so I ran an optical cable from the TV to the receiver and switched the TV to “audio out”, but I still encountered the same problem with the speaker icons not lighting up on the receiver. Anyone have any ideas for what I could try next? It’ll be a shame if I have to go back to my Roku stick and forego all the smart TV functionality I just went out of my way for.

EDIT: Problem solved. I had the TV input on the receiver set to the wrong channel.

8 1/2 - A movie that never fails to make me excited about movies in general. One of my absolute favorites.

Eyes Without a Face - Very cool French horror flick from the 60s. It’s common knowledge that it was the inspiration for Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, but I can also see echoes of it in Ex Machina. Worth checking out of that’s your bag.

Darling - Very basic from a story standpoint, which I could see turning a lot of people off, but it was so artfully executed and Lauren Ashley Carter had such weird charisma that I felt those shortcomings were more than compensated for. Polanski’s early psychological thriller/horror stuff gets mentioned a lot in the reviews I’ve read, and I don’t disagree.

Hail, Caesar! - Definitely minor Coens, but fun as hell. I got the distinct impression the whole thing was an excuse to shoot the set pieces from the fake 50s movies, and I’m fine with that because they were delightful. I feel really good about Alden Ehrenreich playing Han Solo after seeing this.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

I’ve been thinking about Glover for Lando ever since the movie was announced, but I never thought he’d do it. He seemed to be open to the idea in an interview I read the other day, though, so maybe it’ll come to pass.

I finally got around to watching Hail Caesar! and I’m now thoroughly convinced that Alden Ehrenreich is the right choice for young Han. I had no idea he was this good.

“NEW NOVEL SYNOPSIS REVEALS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JYN ERSO, HER FATHER AND DIRECTOR KRENNIC!”

“James Luceno’s upcoming novel Catalyst, which serves as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has just received a synopsis by Del Rey revealing lots of interesting new details about the relationship between the main characters from the highly anticipated first Star Wars spin-off movie. Check it out…”

War is tearing the galaxy apart. For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars, each building more and more deadly technology in an attempt to win the war. As a member of Chancellor Palpatine’s top secret Death Star project, Orson Krennic is determined to develop a superweapon before their enemies can. And an old friend of Krennic’s, the brilliant scientist Galen Erso, could be the key.

Galen’s energy-focused research has captured the attention of both Krennic and his foes, making the scientist a crucial pawn in the galactic conflict. But after Krennic rescues Galen, his wife, Lyra, and their young daughter, Jyn, from Separatist kidnappers, the Erso family is deeply in Krennic’s debt. Krennic then offers Galen an extraordinary opportunity: to continue his scientific studies with every resource put utterly at his disposal. While Galen and Lyra believe that his energy research will be used purely in altruistic ways, Krennic has other plans that will finally make the Death Star a reality. Trapped in their benefactor’s tightening grasp, the Ersos must untangle Krennic’s web of deception to save themselves and the galaxy itself.

This also explains why Galen Erso would be the one who gives the Rebels the heads-up on the contruction of the Death Star (as was revealed in the international trailer a few weeks ago).

Just came here to post this synopsis, but it looks like I’ve been beaten to the punch. This novel has been on my radar for a while, but now that I know it’s set farther back in the timeline and isn’t so much a direct lead-in to Rogue One as it is deep background info, I’m actually a lot more interested in it.

What should we see in IX?
Time

I don’t for a minute believe IX will actually be the final numbered episode. There’s no way Disney’s going to do nothing but anthology films ad infinitum after 2019. My only hope is that they allow a reasonable amount of time to pass between trilogies. Maybe start another series in the distant past a la KOTOR and then come back to the “present” in ten years or so.

Anyway, as for what I hope to see in IX, I guess some sort of resolution for Luke? It’s hard to say without having seen VIII.

. . . the reinsertion of the droid factory sequence . . .

I’d kind of like to see this too, provided Threepio isn’t involved at all like in L8wrtr’s cut. The only thing that bugs me about this version (and I really mean the only thing) is the abruptness of the meeting with Dooku after Anakin and Padmé land on Geonosis.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

In the past couple of weeks I’ve finally taken the plunge into PT fan edits, and I’m a little surprised at what it’s done to my rankings. I’ve traditionally ranked AOTC at the bottom of my list because in its official form it’s somehow as boring as TPM and as head-scratchingly stupid as ROTS at the same time, but I think it’s been my favorite of the three in both edits of the PT I’ve seen so far (those being L8wrtr’s and HAL9000’s). Now that I’ve seen it with most of the awful stripped away, I think I agree with Harmy’s assertion a while back that it’s got the best story of the trilogy.

Pitch the Obi Wan spinoff!
Time

I want a Yojimbo meets Seven Samurai kind of thing where Ben plays two Tatooine crime bosses off each other in order to help some poor peasants. Largely free-standing, little to no content relating to the old Jedi order, or Luke, or the greater saga in general. Just an exciting episode from his time as a mysterious hermit. Almost like a Tatooine folk tale.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

Personally, I gravitate to the sets that are based around the vintage posters and/or McQuarrie paintings. I haven’t put a huge amount of thought into it, but whatever it is I’d like it to look like part of an existing set, which is why I bring it up here rather than immediately taking a crack at it on my own. I also figured I may not be the only one interested in the idea of including the '81 crawl, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get that thought out in the open. I probably won’t be burning these until ESB 2.5 is out and if I’m the only one interested I’ll fool around with it eventually myself, but I wanted to get the idea on people’s radar.

Question to everyone making covers: would any of you be willing to whip up a label for a bonus disc with the '81 crawl? Since the main SW disc in this set doesn’t have seamless branching, I was planning on including the alternate crawl version on its own BD-25 whenever I finally get around to burning these/when someone finally arrives at a satisfactory reconstruction of the crawl itself.

In 30 years why do you think Emporer...
Time

Honestly, by the time I saw Dooku use the lightning I wasn’t at all fazed because I’d used it myself in however many video games. If you need someone to blame for lightning not being unique to the Emperor, blame Kyle Katarn.

EDIT: Holy shit, there’s five pages of this?! Sorry if this is no longer relevant, it was on the page where I clicked “reply”.

Should we attempt to watch Star Wars (original trilogy) in true 24p?
Time

Personally I think this obsession with trying to make everything as close to a 1977 screening as possible is more than a little misguided. At the end of the day, you’re still watching digital video; short of striking a new print, you’re only ever going to get a simulation of authenticity. This refusal to optimize these things for home video has kept me from fully embracing a lot of the 35mm-based projects that have been released. I would love to see a 35mm scan of an entire Star Wars film all cleaned up and degrained like what Harmy did in ROTJ v. 2.5 with that sequence that was out of focus on the blu-ray, but the insistence on carrying over all of the imperfections to a new format where they don’t even really make sense kind of ruins it for me.
