Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released)
Time

I’m sure that this has been addressed at some point in one of the threads for this trilogy, but I’m just having a hell of a hard time getting these to work on discs. I’ve selected “Do not change SEI and VUI data” when making the disc images as it says to in the first post, and the ISO plays fine in VLC, but when I put it on a disc the video skips and jolts around while the sound plays normally. Is there an easy fix for this?

OOT release not in anyone's plans...

I feel like accepting every answer Hidalgo gives on this kind of thing as gospel truth is kind of like that myth that an undercover police officer has to tell you he’s a cop if you ask. He’s under no oath to tell the whole truth at all times. If someone asks for information that Disney doesn’t want out there yet, of course he’s going to lie, just like he’d never confirm it if someone actually guessed what’s up with Snoke. That’s certainly not to say we should always assume the opposite of whatever he says is true or anything like that, but I’m taking it with a grain of salt.

That 70mm series that I mentioned a few weeks back started last night with Lawrence of Arabia. In spite of having seen it in a theater as a DCP just three months ago, I decided to go again, knowing it would gnaw at me forever if I didn’t see the print. The print itself was from the 1989 restoration, and aside from some missing frames around the first few reel changes, it was absolutely pristine. Barring Disney striking new 70mm prints of the OUT at some point (which I guess isn’t completely out of the question since they did so for TFA), it doesn’t seem possible that any theater experience will ever top this.

Tomorrow I’m heading back in to see the only existing 70mm print of Sleeping Beauty. Definitely won’t make it to anything during the week, but on Friday night I plan on going back for 2001: a Space Odyssey. I’d like to see something else that weekend too, but I haven’t made any decisions yet as to what. Perhaps Spartacus.

Convincing Casual Fans to Begin with "Star Wars"
Time

I’ve got a couple of friends who either haven’t seen them at all or else not since they were little kids. With the new ones coming out, they’re interested in catching up, but we just haven’t found the time for a marathon. They’re all totally amenable to my insistence on the DE, as well as holding off on the prequels for a while if not skipping them altogether.

What Does Everyone Here Think of Star Wars?
Time

I really wish there was a way to hide posts with hyperbolic denunciations of ROTJ. Of all the insufferable jackassery that goes on here, whe whining over how the franchise has been “completely ruined” since '83 may be the most insufferable. I understand that people hold that opinion, but good God does the constant circling back to that point get irritating for those of us with reasonable expectations and any amount of perspective.

Isn’t it loosely based on some classic work of literature? Like how Ten Things I Hate About You is actually The Taming of the Shrew. I really have no idea if that’s the case, that’s just the only reason I can come up with for screen in it in an English class.

EDIT: yep, just looked it up. She’s the Man is very loosely based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

I was suddenly inspired to get back on my James Bond kick I abandoned a couple of months ago, so I ordered a couple more discs. In the meantime, I elected to re-watch On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which I like more and more each time I see it. Such a strange entry in the franchise, but it’s totally endeared itself to me. On a side note, these remastered Bond blu-rays from a year or two ago are just spectacular. I cannot get over the quality of the transfers.

'97 vs. '04 (and '11) - Your preference?
Time

You know what? I’m going to go out on a limb and say 2004, because of the prequelisms. The argument that the 1997 cut is superior because it doesn’t have the PT references doesn’t really work for me, because if you’re trying to ignore the PT, you should just watch the OUT, because they’re just better movies. The only thing the SE can really claim to bring to the table is smoother visual continuity with the subsequent installments of the saga, and in that regard the 1997 version is kind of obsolete.

Darth Id said:

some confusion by fans as to why Threepio acted as if he didn’t know who Leia was in the film, despite that being nearly impossible.

What’s this bit all about? I just remember Threepy saying ‘There will be no escape for the princess this time,’ clearly indicating he’s well aware of her and her exploits. When does he ever act unfamiliar with her?

“Who is she? She’s beautiful!”
“I’m afraid I’m not quite sure sir. I think she was a passenger on our last voyage, a person of some importance, I believe.”

EDIT: ugh, while I was checking to make sure I had the quotation right it looks like I was beaten to the punch.

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread

Poe talking to BB-8 wasn’t much different from Luke and R2 on Dagobah, where Luke’s translator screen was at the bottom of a swamp for most of the duration. As for Rey, I just figured it was a combination of her having been on her own dealing with all types to survive on Jakku since she was a child and maybe a somewhat Force-enhanced sense of empathy.

ROTJ suffers from some serious pacing issues in the second act and phoned-in performances from everyone except Hamill and McDiarmid, to say nothing of whether or not you’re willing to buy the Ewoks. TFA has its own issues, but I don’t ever find myself getting bored with it the way I often do when I watch ROTJ, and that certainly counts for something in my view.

Holy hell, I own that book and I had no idea that was in there! I was trying to read it front to back for a while, but I only ever got about a third of the way through before getting frustrated with how unwieldy and non-portable the thing is and I’ve just been using it as a coffee table book ever since. Looks like I’m going to have to read that chapter in the morning.
