Denoise, Regrain And CC of ESB Grindhouse (Released)

I did an encode last night with the DTS-HD tracks as well. I set the level to 4.1 (it doesn’t call it high profile, but that’s what it is), and because for some reason it told me the frame rate was 90000 I changed the FPS to 24000/1001. I haven’t burned it yet but Media Player Classic and VLC both liked it well enough. I used Virtual CloneDrive to mount it.

I just did the same and it worked.

I’m having trouble getting this on a disc. I muxed in the DTS-HD tracks from Despecialized and made an ISO, but the disc I burned it to doesn’t play and VLC crashes when I try to open the disc image. I’ll try it again in the morning, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had a problem with this or if it’s just a fluke.

EDIT: I’m watching it now off my hard drive and it really is lovely. This is definitely the only ESB I’m watching until Poita’s is out.

Oh, I totally get it, and I agree that it’s most important to make the unadulterated versions available; I’m just psyched to see something different in the pipeline. As for your point about everyone being free to make whatever they want with these materials, I’ve been thinking about taking a crack at a denoised SSE myself, and this might have pushed me over the edge.

Oh my God, I’ve been dying for someone to take on exactly this project for ages, and now not only is someone doing it, but I only have to wait a couple days for it?! It’s a May the 4th miracle! I seriously can’t wait, your single-pass Grindhouse was already one of my absolute favorites. Denoised, I’m almost certain this’ll be my main ESB.

I just finished reading Aftermath. It’s not the best, or even particularly good overall, but I didn’t mind it and I think “frag” is a far better substitute for “fuck” than “kriff” ever was.

The Aftermath books get progressively better as they go on. The first one is eh, but if you’ve already slogged through it I recommend sticking with the series because it only goes uphill from there. Empire’s End was more or less on par with Bloodline and Catalyst.

Practically nobody is interested in a special special edition.

Based on Reddit, more people are interested in this than the OUT. Every time I see the subject of the different cuts come up anywhere other than here, someone inevitably says some variation of “the unaltered versions would be nice, but I’d rather they just get rid of the bad changes and update the CGI for the rest so that it will match the new movies”, and then everyone else upvotes it.

I wonder if we’ll ever get another Star Wars movie that ends with the cast doing a goofy pose, a la ANH, ROTJ, and TPM. TLJ seems like an unlikely candidate, but maybe it will work in the Han Solo movie. I kind of hope they do go that route again at some point. I remember thinking of that as one of the little signatures of Star Wars before they made four movies in a row that didn’t have it.

Would not mind a live action Clone Wars movie although giving the dislike people have for the PT it probably not gonna happen.

I’d love to see something set in the PT era that’s actually good. Not sure about the Clone Wars specifically because the clones were never terribly compelling for me, but I’d definitely be in for something in that timeframe with practical sets and a good script.

At this point, with 4K77 (and more specifically the Skywalker Edition that SkyDude is working on) and Poita’s projects in the pipeline, an official release of the OUT isn’t life or death for me. What does bum me out immensely, though, is the continuing resilience of the Lowry transfer. The fact is, I’m too young to feel that I’ve been personally robbed of something with the OUT being unavailable. I came to the understanding that the theatrical versions are the superior cuts a little later on when I could think about movies in a way that was more sophisticated, but the fact is that for basically my entire childhood I just watched whichever version was available. I had some friends who had the Faces set and we watched those whenever I was over their houses, but more often than not it was the 97 tapes, because those were the ones I got for my eighth birthday and my parents weren’t about to buy me another set (and let’s be real, I didn’t give a shit, I was eight). This is all to say that I’m not someone who’s going to refuse to see Star Wars in a theater because it’s the SE; it wouldn’t be ideal, but I do think I would still be capable of tapping into that eight-year-old who-cares-what-version mindset if they end up carting them out next month for the anniversary. What is inexcusable for me, though, is how piss poor the current master is. I popped in the blu-ray a few weeks ago to watch the Battle of Yavin after watching Rogue One, and the image quality is just such a goddamn bummer. So yeah. Certainly hoping for the OUT, but failing that, I’m in the camp that wouldn’t sneeze at a remastered SE with proper colors like the 97 version.
