So today I’ve been listening to the full cast unabridged audio production of The Golden Compass (or Northern Lights, depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on) because Philip Pullman just released the first volume in his followup trilogy and I need a refresher before diving into that. Anyway, I was delighted to find out when the credits rolled at the end of part one that the whole production was directed by noneother than Garrick “Biggs Darklighter” Hagon. Google tells me that he also voices a character later on in the book, so I’m looking forward to that.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I think a lot of the 35mm preservations here tend to over-correct the grain thing, though. I don’t necessarily want a blu-ray to recreate the experience of watching a print in a theater; I think home video ought to be mastered for, y’know, the home, and on home systems excessive grain tends to look like noise. The more recent of the Goodfellas transfers strikes a good balance, I think. It’s got enough grain to be able to tell instantly that it was sourced from film without hitting you over the head with it.

I was really hoping they’d go the Indy route and make it Han Solo and the ______.

That’s the title for the sequels and later home video releases.

Sure. I didn’t say “Go the Raiders route”, I said “go the Indy route”, referring to the series.

EDIT: Wait, are you suggesting there will be more young Han movies that use this naming convention and that when the Blu-ray of this one comes out it will be retitled Han Solo and Solo: a Star Wars Story?

My MoviePass card finally arrived this week, so I’ll be going to the movies a whole lot more often. I plan on finally getting to It and rewatching Blade Runner 2049 soon.

I have a few friends who got those cards, has worked well for them. Sadly I rarely go to the movies, and love IMAX, so it is not a good fit for me.

See, the closest IMAX screen is something like 45 minutes away, and meanwhile I have two non-IMAX theaters within ten minutes of my house, so I’m an ideal candidate.

What are you reading?
Time

I took a break from this . . .

. . . to read this . . .

. . . but before getting through that, I couldn’t stop myself from picking up this . . .

. . . so I’m sort of a mess at the moment, as far as reading goes. I feel like I ought to give Shirley Jackson priority in the run-up to Halloween, but I don’t want to let Flashman sit for too long, so I’ll probably read them in tandem. Given the nature of FaCPoV, I don’t feel too bad walking away from it for a while, but I’d like to have it at least mostly finished by the time Canto Bight comes out.

I still am trying to piece together what madness might go down in the third act.

It almost seems foolhardy to even try at this point. Think of everything we know is in the movie that we didn’t see in the trailer. No Canto Bight. No Rose Tico. No Vice Admiral Holdo or DJ. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out when we finally see the movie that almost all of the trailer footage was from the first act, like it was with TFA.

The same basic cable channels have been running marathons of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, etc. every so often for years. I don’t think it’s “we’re losing the rights soon” so much as “eh, guess it’s time for another Star Wars marathon.” Also, I’m not sure how much Disney talks to TNT, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there was some coordination to drum up Star Wars excitement before the trailer drops tonight.

That article was written in 2015? I didn’t think TV was still shot on film.

I know Mad Men was. I’m not sure how widespread it’s been recently apart from that.

I feel like a curmudgeon saying so because I’ve seen a lot of folks citing it as one of their favorites, but I thought that Aunt Beru story in FaCPoV was fucking awful. Took me right out of it. The only saving grace was the fact that it was only three pages long. One clunker in the first nine stories is still an excellent ratio though. Here’s hoping this was the only hiccup.

I thought the old BFII had it set up so that you could play with OT or PT armies on any map (but not a mix), and you got the corresponding set of heroes depending on which era you were playing (i.e. Empire vs. Rebels on Kamino or Republic vs. Separatists on Hoth is fine, bout you couldn’t do Republic vs. Empire or Separatists vs. Rebels). Whether that’s how it used to be or not, that’s how I’d like it to be now.

Star Wars "Official" Canon Content Thread

That was the single biggest “no fucking way” moment I’ve had since the reboot.

Anyway, I finished Phasma two or three weeks ago but never actually said so in this thread. On the whole, it gets a thumbs up. I don’t have a ton of patience with the whole proud warrior race trope in general, so that whole aspect gets a little grating by the end, but there’s more than enough good stuff to balance it out. I’ve said it before, but it’s far and away the weirdest novel in the new canon thus far, which I count as an huge positive. It’s got much more of a 1960s/early 1970s sci-fi influence than I’m used to in my SW books, and it’s a welcome variation.

I’d planned to pick up the Leia book soon, but with A Certain Point of View out tomorrow I may go for that one first.

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread
Time

My issue with the logo shot was the music. I think they should have paired “ROGUE ONE” with a couple bars of either the main title or the Rebel fanfare. I know the idea was not to lean too heavily on the John Williams stuff, but I’ve seen too many TV parody episodes with royalty-free Star Wars-esque music. Kicking the film off with a new theme like that almost made it feel fake, if that makes any sense.
