Wait, he actually admitted that it wasn't intended to be a special effects shot. He admitted that it's redundant, poorly written, and pointless? Let me guess, you only read the part about the effect being too expensive due to lack of planning, right?
No he said it was intended to be an effects shot

There's no way George's, "couldn't fit in the effects" statement works. The sequence is not an effects sequence. Watch Han, he walks around the rather large and difficult to hide placeholder actor. He gestures in front of him. Heck, they're walking!! These things make the insertion of a stop motion creature nearly impossible at the time. it would've cost more than the rest of the effects. If it had meant to use a puppet, the two would have stood still, and the placeholder wouldn't have been so large. Also, consider the fact that Lucas didn't even fully design Jabba for the film. It's not an effects shot, and I doubt it was meant to be one.
The scene was cut for one reason, and one reason alone, it stunk. The dialogue's redundant, it spoils the Falcon's reveal, and it alludes to things that don't even impact the film. It wastes time, and is completely unnecessary. Don't give me any of that "it ties IV to VI better' garbage either. That's what Greedo's for. It does affect the story. Vader's shuttle, Jedi Rocks, Mos Eisley, The Celebration, Hayden, they all affect the story. Some do so out right, other through pacing, setting, feel. Jimbo, I respect you're right to disagree, but could you please come up with retorts that don't quote documenteries and interviews word for word. An original stance would be nice.
That is what he said in the audio commentary.

Duration and effect on the story are the prime considerations when looking at these things, otherwise Lucas could just re-film the entire trilogy and state he only made ONE small change.![]()
P.S., just for the record, I COULDN'T CARE LESS abut Lucas updating the visual effects in the EXISTING FOOTAGE of the Original Trilogy. Clear? It's the NEW FOOTAGE, INSERTED FX, and BLATANT STORY CHANGES that bother me.
Clear?
That scene was always meant to be there. They didn't have the time or money to create the stop motion puppet. Thats how it was orginally filmed and scripted. There are no real story changes. Its the same story I have always loved.

Reruns get great ratings on the Cartoon Network. Any chance of a 'Family Guy'-like resurrection for 'Futurama'?
We're trying to figure it out. If we can do more episodes, we'd love to. It's a very ambitious show, and it's very expensive. That's been a sticking point. What [co-developer] David Cohen and I would love is to continue many of the stories we worked out in advance. All science-fiction epics have an underlying theme, which is 'things are not what they seem to be,' and that was certainly the case with 'Futurama.' David and I worked for a couple of years [planning the show] before we even pitched it, and we haven't revealed all of the secrets that are embedded in it. There are even characters that we created back in the beginning of the series that we never got around to introducing. It looks like a goofy cartoon, but the underlying science-fiction ideas are pretty good.
Other thing we see a short Futurama clip on the Star Wars DVDs during the credits of birth of a lightsaber. I think Lucasfilm is pulling for the cause of bring the show back. Its ovious that its creater wants it back. I have alot of hope. Even if the cause does fail the first four seasons on DVD are great and I will always loved them.

My problem with the horrific SE and 2004 SSE versions is not the digital effects, but the jarring impact that adding FX-laden story portions of these 1977-83 films. It just doesn't look right in terms of consistency, anymore than significant facial surgery looks good on an 80-year old woman. You take one look, cringe, and think "whoa, something's not right here".
Not to mention that updating JUST the digital FX to the OT is the LEAST of my worries, as it is the ham-fisted "let's re-do the story" crap that is truly offending. If George wanted Greedo to shoot first, he would have done it in Star Wars. It's not like he didn't write or direct the fucking movie. Then we have the stupidity of showing the Wampa over and over and over, thereby bleeding the scene of its original suspense, along with the uttery lame "Hayden Ghost", and a ton of other amateur changes that a first-year film student would reject.
You like updated visual FX, and I have no huge problem with it either, but don't be a moron and try and pass the SE and 2004 SSE versions as just "updated FX', as the changes are far more intrusive than just that.
Vast majority of the changes are just upgraded effects. There are over a hundred changes in the 2004 edition but but only a few of them aren't upgraded effects. I don't like all the changes but there are far more good ones then bad ones.

I wish I was a Lucas mole. I am just a 17 year old Star Wars fan who loves digital effects. It just looks more realistic to me.

Obi-wan was good until death. Which is why he still looks old. Anakin Skywalker died when he became Darth Vader. "Then my father is truely dead"

Now thats fucking crazy. Come one what about the new Mos Isley, expanded cloud city, new wampa, new sarlacc, matt line deletion, improved Yavin shots, improved lightsabers, new Biggs scene, and the deletion of that horrendous ewok song. Plenty of really awsome changes that make the movie better. For every bad change there are 50 good ones.
Mos Eisley: Bad, had more of a ghost-town feel to it before that was more ominous.
Cloud City: Good, always liked this, but they needed some window-consistency there...
Wampa: Bad. More tense and ominous not seeing him much.
Sarlacc: Bad. WTF is with that beak?
Matte Lines: Good until they missed 93 of them.
Yavin: Split on these...some good and some bad
Lightsabers: See MATTE LINES.
Biggs: VERY good, the biggest change in the SE that I think improves the film...hell, the ONLY change that improved the film.
Ewok Song: Always liked it, but I do like the SE song better, it works more as an ending to the saga.
DEATH STAR ATTACK (since you forgot this): I actually like the SE version a lot more, it's more tense and exciting. I actually almost got annoyed watching the OT version of this with all the slowness and roughness of it and then I realized what I was thinking and slapped myself.
The new Wampa is my favorite change. The scene made no sense before. Its much better seeing it. The beak on the sarlacc is the only way to watch that scene. I always thought the sarlacc was stupid. There is nothing threatening about a hole in the ground. With the beak it really makes the sarlac a monster out to get them. A great change. The orginal ewok song sucked ass. In my opinion its worse then Jedi rocks. The new one isn't great either but its better then that dog turd.

But regarding Luke recognizing him...he is a Jedi and they do have those force abilities. I'm sure he could sense his father's presence. On the same topic, removing Anakin's eyebrows was stupid. I mean come one. Even if Anakin gets his face burned in ROTS, technology keeps him alive, why couldn't it regrow his eyebrows??
Removing his eye brows is a very good change. It makes his face more messed up and therefore improves Vaders suffering. If his hair didn't grow back neither would his eye brows. I think the Jabba scene helps bridge the gap between the movies better. I like the scene but Han stepping on Jabbas tail didn't make sense.

Goddamn you.
Not a Gun gun fan but I will take frog men over teddy bears anyday. The gun gun fight may have been gooffy but it makes alot more sense. The gun guns had several advanced energy weapons and shields. Droids are alot less efficient then stormtroopers. Even then many gun guns die and they lost the battle until the ship was destroyed. The ewoks have no advanced technology. They also suck as warriors and constantly faulter. Despite this they defeat a huge army of stormtroopers with only a few of them died. It made the clones look like pussies. "Oh my God 3 foot teddy bears with sticks lets ignore our years of military training and advanced weapons and fall down" They also bring down a walker with logs. Too bad none of the rebals on Hoth didn't have logs it would have probably saved there bases from the walkers that advanced laser canons couldn't take down. The Empire is powerful enough to rule the galaxy but can't seem to build a targetting system that can hit a bear running at ten miles per hour. Ever hear of infared. Return of the Jedi is the only Star Wars flick where the odds don't make sense.

Changes I dislike
1. Greedo shooting first. I know everyone always mentions this one but it is a needless change that kind of lessesns the scene.
2. Changing Obi-Wans call. Really needless and makes no sense
3. Changing Bobas voice. Its better for continuality but I loved Bobas old voice and its possible for a clone to have a slightly different voice
4. Hayden as Anakins Ghost. Makes sense in some ways but its a bit disrespectful to the memory of Shaw and it doesn't make sense that Luke recognizes him as his father considering his radically different appearance.
5. Han stepping on Jabbas tail. I like everything else about the scene but why would Han in an attempt to bargin for his life step on Jabbas tail. It should have been modified so Han steps over Jabbas tail.

Even with such a good sound system, most people wouldn't notice the problem, and since Jimbo here really doesn't want to, it sounds good to him. Well, at least he's pleased with the DVDs.
