Changes in 2004 DVDs

Heres a final complete list of all the changes for the Star Wars trilogy DVDs

Episode IV: A New Hope

Lots of matte lines removed. The space under Luke's speeder looks much more realistic.

R2D2's blue parts are much cleaner and more consistent.

The 1997 animation added to the entrance to Mos Eisley is much smoother.

Greedo and Han shoot at the same time, and Han's dodge is far more realistic.

Jabba has been retexturized and looks considerably better. Han still walks on his tail, but it's much smoother.

The lettering on various Death Star panels are written in Aurebesh rather than English.

Diagona has been digitally enhanced with a iris and an eyelid

The matte-painted hall in Leia's detention block looks much more realistic.

Lightsabers look much better. Colors are far brighter and the blades are more defined.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The battle of Hoth is enhanced with a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers

Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor instead of that near-fossil they had.

The conversations between Vader and Palpatine has a few new lines. Palpatine knows that Luke is Vader's son.

Light sabers are again fixed, making them more consistent.

Temuera Morrison does the voice of Boba Fett

Luke's inane scream when he jumps to escape Vader on Cloud City is gone. And there was much rejoicing.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Like the other two, the light sabers are fixed.

The Rancor looks considerably better, with its matte lines removed.

When Vader's helmet is removed, his eyebrows are gone and his eyes are recolored to match Hayden's still played by Shaw.

Naboo is now part of the celebration

Jedi temple appears in the background of the coresunt celebration

Hayden Christensen replaces Sebastian Shaw as Anakin's ghost. Lucas explains this in the commentary, which is spoilerish for Episode III.

How does it change the plot of the movie? Maybe it changes the "history" of the film in the sense that the error is erased. But the movie is the same. Erasing the visible glass digitally does not make it such that Indy did not fall into the Well of the Souls and was faced with a king cobra that reared up and hissed at him. The plot and flow of the movie are exactly the same. The behind-the-scenes history is the only thing that has changed. If you feel otherwise, Jimbo, than please explain how the movie is different.

The thing is though I feel the same way about Star Wars. I don't believe most of the changes hurt the movie. People are always talking about film history really its all the same thing. Both don't complement film history but do make these a better movie then they were before.

Han being sarcastic is when Luke tells him on the sail barge he's taken care of everything... to which Han replies "riiiiiiiiight"

thats sarcasm...
in fact we know that line was never supposed to be sarcastic anyway due to the fact that Jabba was once played by a human being...

The scene was filmed with the intention of replacing the actor with a stop motion puppet. It was always meant to be sarcasm. That scene was originally filmed and scripted the way it is. It belongs in the movie.

I can see that.

Seriously though this is bull as they are still doing reshoots here at Fox not to mention the buttload of CGI shots that George will have ILM staying up until the night before to complete.

This will be an interesting auction to watch, I shall follow it's progress with great interest.

EDIT: Well that was quick.

I will follow this too. I want to see if there is anyone seriously stupid enough to place a bid for this ovious scam. Not only that but the main villian Grevious still doesn't have a voice as Gary Oldman droped off the project. The best this could be is a very lacking very incomplete cut consisting of fan edits and storyboards. Hell maybe its just a junk of hyperspace documentarys. Whatever it is its definutly not worth shelling out one cent for.

but dont you think it would be better without that scene in there...

oh and Bossk nice pickup on the continuity error...
thats actually very noticable..

and the line... "Jabba your a wonderful human being" just makes no sense at all....

That line is sarcasm. I got a good laugh when he said that. It matchs Hans personality and style of humor. I like the scene. The only thing I didn't like about it was the tail stomp. It should have been modified so Han steps over Jabbas tail.

Episode III on EBAY?

Pardon my french but what a mother fucking load of shit. You would have to be a total dense head to seriously believe that someone is selling Revenge of the Sith on ebay before the movies even finished. Who does this guy think we are believing that he could have a complete version of the movie before even the teaser trailer has been released. The best thing this could be is a rough cut. Even thats unlikely since I doubt Lucasfilm would let something like that leak. My suggestion ignore this and wait for the real Revenge of the Sith

Many things about the new Jabba look much better. His skin color and texture is much more realistic as are his eyes. His hand expressions and facial expressions both look much better as well. Still his movement still looks a bit choppy but I am hopping this is just the internet link and he will look more smooth on the DVD. Even if its not it is definutly so much better then before.

Finally we got video of the new Jabba. Seeing him in motion he looks a bit stif. I don't know if its just a slow connection but I hope this problem doesn't come up on the DVD. Still he definutly looks much better then before and the scene is much better. The new Han and Greedo shot show that Greedo does not shoot first on the DVD. They now appear to shoot at the same time. A compromise with all the 10 people who enjoyed that change. Also Hans line of "Yes I bet you have" have been restored to its original form. Again it was best in its original form.

Ah but the Indy DVDs were not the originals. 14 changes were made to the trilogy. Notice the glass separating Ford from the Cobra is gone. I don't see what else is needed. Star Wars took place in a galaxy far far away. Such a huge universe could be greatly enhanced with modern techology. Indania Jones takes place in a old 1930s setting. There is more then enough technology in the 80s to make that world. It could use a few more matte line clean ups. There is no room for CGI in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Lucas: Madman or Genius?

OK, here's the thing about George Lucas. First of all, I've seen only one non-SW movie directed by him, American Graffitti, and I enjoyed it. I've noticed that he had the actors decide how the scene would be made by themselves, you can notice that on how Richard Dreifuss acts in this movie. The writing is pretty ok but no sheakespeare. The thing is, he had a great idea, and executed it well.

For Star Wars, he had a terrible idea which slowly developed into something good. After some script re-writes, he got into something that would be interesting to see. In order to do that he had many influences that actually "worked" the script for him, Kurosawa as an example. He also had a great team and great minds working with him. In 1977 he had a visionary mind and a great criative vision.

Suddenly he becamse a multi-millionaire, and became distant to his creative mind and decided to focus on his business. He got old and lost all his experience. If you ask a 15 year old kid to tell you a story, and then ask that same person, 30 years later, to do it again, he'll not be as imaginative and creative as he used to be.

SFX, big budgets, bad luck, out of touch with today's world and a ego problem all contributed to what he is today. He might do some interesting non-SW films if he wants to, I'm sure he would do great drama films, or maybe a romantic comedy, but he has lost his touch for something as visionary and insanely creative as Star Wars is.

If anything he is better now then ever. He is a great visionary. Was then is still great now. Star Wars was an amazing achievement that started a world wide phenomena. Star Wars was not based off any book it all came from the mind of one man.

However, as cool and mysterious Clive Rivell is, for some reason GL didn't bring him back for RotJ, and we got Ian. HE is now the Palpatine of the Saga, and to keep the original in there just wouldn't be right. But if they were going to change stuff around, this is the way it should have been done:

Just a simple re-edit of the existing scene, taking out repetitive and unecessary dialogue. I'd also alter the music to the Emperor's theme.

Clive Rivell only did the voice of the Emperor. The original emperor was an old women with chimppanze eyes. Why anyone would want a women and a chimp to be the Emperor is beyond me. Ian Mcdarmid also has a much cooler voice the Clive Rivell.

Never gonna happen. You forget that James Earl Jones is recording dialog for Episode 3.
