Info Wanted: Colorized Classics - is anyone preserving them?
Time

Haven't had time to respond here sooner as I've been busy with my projects, but a HUGE thanx to Spaced Ranger for explaining the process. The paint program looks very familiar to me (PSP, I believe) and those settings worked nicely when I tried to "test" your method.

I own both, the Colorized DVD and the new (very nicely transferred) B&W Bluray. Unfortunately, my DVD is cracked, but I do still have a DVDrip (at 1.8GB) of it backed up on my HDD. EDIT: just found an iso of the DVD on one of my backup HDDs:)

If you want, I can either post some usable screenshots from both and/or results using the technique you described;)

This is interesting stuff and I'm wondering how this can be done easily using something like Sony Vegas. (reason I mention that is because I like to be able to have a real-time preview of the effects of the plugins as you make adjustments) I will see if I can follow your guide but, instead, using the various plugins in the app. If someone knows an easy way to do this and can save me time, I welcome that BUT I intend on figuring it out regardless and if I see no post concerning the matter, am happy to share my process for others to use:)

New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Preservation Project (* unfinished - lots of info *)
Time

First off, thank you to all the people that have shown support of this project by posting in the thread, as well as the numerous people that have sent me PMs concerning this project. I greatly appreciate all the support and anticipation of the completion of this project.

Honestly, I have been slacking on this project a little bit lately because I have been working hard on a couple of other things. However, with the "flood" of messages I have gotten within the last couple of weeks here and in other places where I have mentioned this project, this project is now moving back up to my "top priority," where I will continue my other projects, but devote a lot less time to them.

What does this mean to anyone reading this thread?! Well, first of all, there will be more frequent updates on progress. Next, hopefully, this means that the project will be completed much faster. Granted, there is still an a**load of work ahead of me, but it will go faster if I devote more of my time to it, as now it has been limited.

Finally, as far as the Swedish dub tracks are concerned, it would be nice to have them for all of the episodes and, if possible, I will include them. As I stated above, I will start working on this project a lot more and will post updates, which will help you figure out which episodes I need the audio for.

As I have started the work on certain episodes on more than one occasion (as I managed to find better video sources) for now, I have the first 13 episodes completed (where I am in process on syncing all audio right now for episode 13) and I will continue from there. Originally I had 21 episodes completed but, like I said, I found better sources so I had to go back and re-do some of it. It's actually pretty crazy, because between all the different sources that I have now, the project takes up nearly 350GB(!)

Anyway, again, THANK YOU to all that are interested in this project and continue to support it. Your patience will be greatly rewarded;)

The Arrival [spoRv] <em>BD-25</em> (Released)
Time

I'm happy I could help out Andrea by providing the soundtrack;)

I like to collect soundtracks and, over the years, have "established" some friendships on the internet where I am able to acquire rare/oop soundtracks usually in FLAC. In this case, a friend of mine in China (who doesn't want to be named) helped provide the soundtrack. If anyone needs help locating certain soundtracks, feel free to PM me and I'll see what I can do.

As far as the cover art is concerned, very nice job Andrea BUT if I may make one suggestion... That screenshot comparison might look nice when looking at the images on a computer, but once printed out for the actual cover I believe that the images will be too small to really see the details and therefore the differences between the two. What do others think?

We Are The Walking Dead (Mini-Series) - FANedit project (* unfinished project *)
Time

This is why I want to take the "best" parts and assemble them into the films. In this case(the girls you speak of), I would just drop that sub-plot entirely as it's not really relevant, is way too rushed and doesn't help move the story forward. In fact, there are numerous "sub-plots" that are just "filler" and make the show seem like a damn soap opera.

Ha, ha, about the "boring edition." there already is a version like that, it's called the tv show, LOL/ just kidding.

If you are interested in more details about this project, check out the thread on fanres.com about this project as there is a little bit more active conversation there;o)

Indeed, but I have the "luxury" of a film format versus trying to stretch out a story for an entire season. There is enough footage there (believe it or not) to put together a couple (roughly) hour movie from each season. I have TONS of notes and have re-watched the entire thing and have been trying to assemble a faster paced story but not to the point where everything feels rushed and sloppy. The only way to do this is to concentrate on certain aspects of the storyline and drop numerous "back-stories" that are not really relevant.

It is not an easy task to find the proper balance and I agree with you that later seasons might have to be addressed differently (i.e. your LotR example) For now, I'm focusing on the first film (i.e. season 1) and this has been cut down to ~139minutes (including credits) What needs to be there (IMHO) is left in tact and the rest went "bye-bye." I am still working on it (even though it is now in final stages and honestly is 98% done and just need a couple minor corrections)

If you have any suggestions for me, I suggest you obtain the workprint copy and take a look at the "style" that I'm aiming for;o)

Thanx4ur input... ("...need more input..." - Johnny 5, LMAO)

We Are The Walking Dead (Mini-Series) - FANedit project (* unfinished project *)
Time

I am very excited to finally, (after nearly four months of work) officially announce my project and the project is simple… turn each season of the show into a single movie that will be part of a mini-series of films.

I LOVE “The Walking Dead” and it’s a good show BUT… well, that’s the whole problem that there is a “but…,” actually there are a few things that bother me. There are waaaaayy to many “filler” scenes that are irrelevant and slow the show down too much. Also, I have a problem with the “flash” scenes where they are trying to show two different things happening simultaneously as it interrupts “the flow” of certain scenes (glen and rick walking with walker guts on them on the street, comes to mind first)

Anyway, I wanted to present the story in a chronological manner (which means that any “flashbacks” from later season relevant to story at the “time” it happens will have that scene “re-inserted” back where it belongs) and concentrating mainly on Rick and, as the story develops, on Glen & Daryl. These three are there from, pretty much, the start, are still alive (spoiler in the middle of season 5) well into the show, and in my mind are the three “strongest” characters. NOT taking away from all others, especially as the series progresses, but initially this is where I am starting. I want to make them seem more capable right off the beginning (which is reflected by the trimming of certain scenes or dialog)

Thanx to Andrea and a few others, I am attempting at making this a multilingual project. I will also be including audio in French, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Spanish. I was going to include two others but they were too censored to be usable. Also, I would like to include subtitles for all languages. The final product will be a BD-50 (for each film) in 1080p AVC @27mbps with ALL audio options (I am building custom tracks for each language) in 5.1 24bit DTS-HDMA. I also plan on including a custom built (as I have to work on channel 3 where the dialog is) 5.1 sfx&music only track and a custom commentary track. Of course, there will be a 1080p AVCHD9, a 720p AVCHD5 and some kind of SD format (most likely an mp4 and/or a DVD5)

I AM LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!!! First, anyone that is willing to look at the SD “workprint” copy I have encoded and give me feedback would be greatly appreciated. The “workprint” is watermarked as such on-screen and it has a timecode that is also onscreen to help easily identify any “trouble” spots on my project timeline. It’s still a work in progress, that I just watched and already know there are 4 audio transitions I have to fix and one scene where a shot needs to be dropped because it interrupts the “flow” of the scene (for those that watch I’m talking about the shot of Andrea being dropped at 59:07)

I will also need a French and Spanish speaker to help me verify the dialog (as sometimes the timing is different to the English version and this may cause issue here and there that need to be addressed) and to help me create proper subtitles in those languages otherwise I will have to “google translator” those and I know that there will be errors. I already have a friend helping me with the Russian and Andrea offered to help with the Italian. I can do the English (of course, LOL) and the Polish tracks myself.

So far, I ONLY have the first film “completed,” well it’s nearly there. I will be working on each one of the next films in the coming months and “releasing” each one as they are finished. If you want to experience the show in a new, fresh way, then this may be for you. I realize that there are two other fanedits of similar nature out there, and each one of them were decent for what the editors intended but they were not my “cup of tea,” so I decided to give this a shot on my own.

I really hope that there will be some people out there willing to “experience” this “alternate ride.” 😮)

Here are two screenshots from the timecoded SD workprint of minor alterations to title cards that I made during the intro to reflect that this is my work and nothing else is altered in this respect:

For those willing to help, please find my thread over on fanres.com (same title of thread) for more details about obtaining the workprint. Also, for those that have access, there is a sub-thread over on AMPS under the FANedit projects. Also, I’m happy to take any questions regarding this project through the PM system here or on fanres.com

Thanx for your time/interest and I hope to hear from some of you soon;o)

New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Preservation Project (* unfinished - lots of info *)
Time

Since my last update, I have been working meticulously on this project and one more (which I will be announcing within next 24hours.) Of course, I didn't manage to get much done around the holidays, but the project is NOT abandoned and IS moving forward. Release date: ??? (I'm giving myself a LOT of leeway and estimating that it will be finished before this year is over) It has been extremely time-consuming and, at times, frustrating to work on as some of the sources contain that much "damage" that needs to be addressed, plus the time-consuming task of "patching" the logo with different footage (which also has a logo but in different corner of screen) Honestly, there are times during the work on this project that I want to shoot my computer and/or the a-holes that converted all of these incorrectly to begin with. But it is what it is and I'm slowly making progress. I apologize to all that wish I was already finished with this (including my little daughters, LOL) but I can only work on this so fast and for so long at a time... AND, in all honesty, these kinds of projects usually take a long time... to the best of my knowledge, there are numerous projects out there that took one or two years to completely assemble and people just had to wait. I have posted questions about my sources and asked for advice, as to easier ways to "fix" the damage and so far everyone that has looked at the samples I posted, basically told me that my source footage is really messed up. Does this mean it can't be done? NO!! But it does require a lot of MANUAL corrections, in many cases on a frame-by-frame basis.

For those interested in the technical aspect here, the video was transferred incorrectly from NTSC to PAL, where there is a ton of field blending (not talking about frame-blending, the result of incorrect de-interlacing) and the order of fields changes at random from bottom field first to top field first, making de-interlacing the footage an interesting challenge, as I basically have to de-interlace this by doubling the frame rate and changing every field to it's own frame, and then manually "cherry-pick" every frame that I'm matching to a low-bitrate but properly transfered german sourced PAL footage (which I'm also using for the logo patches in most cases where it's needed) Here, this is the BEST way to go but also the SLOWEST. I am able to recover ~95% of all "clean" frames this way (where any avisynth script I tried, and there have been tons that I've tried, researched on video forums, asked other users here and AMPS; all usually ended up being about 50-50 regardless of scripts/methods tried as they all went "coo-koo" trying to deal with these sources) BUT there are still up to 5% per episode of frames that are blended because they were that way on the field level and were single "unique" frames that couldn't be "cherry-picked" from any fields around it.... Anyway, yeah, sloooooooowww process.... but relatively satisfying results...

as far as Swedish dubb is concerned... yeah, sure I'd be happy to sync it too... lately I have been offline a lot more, because my computer processes all of this video stuff waaaaay faster that way and I ran out of HDD space (which was just resolved for xmas, yay) so I haven't downloaded all of the stuff hofverberg has sent me. I hope that those 13 episodes you sent me are still available and that the links are active. I apologize for that :(

now, back2work...

I looked through the screenshots over there and they are amazing. Looks like it was given a proper transfer and I'm trying to figure out why you state that the release is "in censored form" as that's not mentioned anywhere in the reviews. Am I missing something here or are you aware of something they missed?

EDIT: nevermind the question... sorry... forgot google is my friend;o)

well the post states it's the 16mm 1080p WMV "converted to DVD," whatever that means...

but it's definitely not the 35mm footage as there is no mention of it in that post at all

as far as the 35mm disappearing from MS, according to log:

So less than 240 people have downloaded the 16mm WMV from myinternalorgan... and then this happened...

It has come to my attention, as it should others as well, that a guy called Cliff is SELLING this release on craigslist: https://norfolk.craigslist.org/emd/4838142836.html

The fact that you want to share this release with others is one thing and understandable, but the fact that you are trying to PROFIT from other peoples work is despicable!! It clearly states in torrent description that this release is NOT intended to be sold and the "guru's" on the spleen (if they can) should ban the user that is doing this!

Sharing is caring but this.... this is just wrong:(

New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Preservation Project (* unfinished - lots of info *)
Time

I haven't posted anything in this thread, as all I had to say was that the project is still "in progress," because I stopped working on in back in August. I got SOOOOO tired of looking at this show (frame-by-frame) EVERY night that I had to take a break. I worked on some other stuff, have had a lot of personal stuff going on, and then I forgot about this project until just a few days ago when my daughters asked me if they can watch some more episodes of the show to which I had to tell them they will have to wait or watch what's already finished. My daughters' asking me about this made me feel bad that it's not finished yet, so I have FINALLY resumed my work on this project. I am NOT stating a "release date" yet because (as many know when it comes to these kinds of projects) I'm not sure how fast I will be able to complete it and what kinds of "issues" I still might run into during the process of editing this together. I don't want to be in the position where I'm trying to meet a "deadline" and end-up cutting corners just to release the project especially after all the hard-work already put into this to make it proper.  I will say, that I would like to finish it and have it released in January-February 2015 but we'll see...

Since I never heard back about the Swedish dubb, that language option will be omitted and I will be including the languages that I already have: English, Polish, German, and Russian.

There is still the topic of where to release this once it's finished. I contacted the admins over on the spleen who told me that I can NOT release this project over there because it's a Disney production. I have seen other stuff on there from Disney, this show has never been released on DVD, it's not recent, and technically ALL sourced from TVrips or PAL DVDs. I tried to persuade them using all of those points but they won't budge stating that "Winnie the Pooh" is "too high risk." So, I have NO idea where to release this once it complete... I want to make this as available as possible but know that retaining seeds (especially on big torrents) is an issue using public trackers. ANY suggestions here will be welcome;o)

Again, thanx4the patience and I promise the wait will end up being worth it;o)

The Matrix - FULL SCREEN (NOT PAN&amp;SCAN!) - *RELEASED*
Time

If I may chime in on this because people are asking about this DTS-HDMA audio over on the spleen as well and to make this easy, here is a copy and paste of what I posted there:

"History of the Cinema DTS track is as follows: original Cinema DTS CD's (which were 5.0 and the LFE was made custom to make it 5.1) ripped to lossless 5.1 *.w64 file which is SYNCED to the official Blu-ray, was supplied to me by DoomBot (HUGE THANX AGAIN!) I then took a look at that source file and saw some minor clipping in the FL and FR channels mostly in the action sequences of the last third of the movie. The rear channels, aside from literally a couple of instances, were fine. The LFE was left untouched and the Center channel was the one that had the worst issues when it came to clipping which were throughout most of the movie. I worked losslessly on each channel SEPARATELY in Diamond Cut DCForensics 8 and applied a very light de-clipping filter using custom settings to make sure I don't compromise the audio by applying too aggressive of a setting as that would result in degradation. After that, I encoded it into DTS-HDMA. ANYONE that wants this track to enjoy with their Blu-ray can easily mux it as this audio is SYNCED TO BLU-RAY (I know I'm repeating myself, but I want to make that very clear) Because of the weird way that the timing shows on DTS-HDMA tracks, if this audio track it DEMUXED, it will show a runtime of 3hours and 39minutes. This does NOT mean that is the length, but that it's reading wrong (will do so in MPC and VLC, BUT with the DTS-HD plugin will read correctly in foobar2000) Anyway, the length will show up and play properly once MUXED with a VIDEO track."

Any other questions? Feel free to ask and I'll answer the best I can;o)

@ Andrea - as always, thanx4the kind words... will post some screenshots soon;o)

@ digitalfreaknyc - no I have not captured that encode because according to the vudu site, on PC this title is ONLY available in SD(!) as you can see here:

I do own a PS3, so I could stream the HDX copy from there, but my computer is not powerful enough to capture 1080p in real-time without some lagging. Even if I had the ability, aren't the bitrates there pretty low, just like netflix captures?

Dangerous Minds - 1995 - 1080p BD-25 project (* unfinished project *)
Time

So I’m trying to gauge whether there would be any interest for this amongst people on this forum. I love this movie and think it sucks that there has been no blu-ray release of this yet, however there is a very nice MPEG2 1080i HDTV copy of the movie floating around on the internet. After searching for it for a few months (as only the 720p rip from that 1080i source is available on public trackers) I finally found it on a private tracker that I have just recently joined. The source file has a video bitrate of 11000kbps so it’s not great, but a HUGE improvement over the SD DVD releases or even the 720p itunes WEB-DL which is only 720p and has a video bitrate of 3000kbps. The 1080i source file even has a little bit of grain (but not much)

Of course, it being an MPEG2, it suffers from occasional macroblocking and “chroma-bleed” for a frame or two at certain scene changes (but NOT all) but overall it’s a nice source and the best to work with to-date.

Since this is one of my favorite movies I am working on this project regardless and if there is interest I will release it for others to enjoy;o)

The work that has been done so far… Well, I de-interlaced the film and IVTC’ed it so it plays at the correct 23.976fps (source was 59.940fps interlaced). Then I decided to overlay it with REAL 35mm film grain and encoded the video using the AVC codec into a 1920x1080p @~27000kbps file. The result is very nice and now I’m on to syncing the audio tracks that I have collected for the movie and they are as folllows:

English 5.1 DD from the Region 1 DVD - synced
English 5.1 DTS-HDMA custom built using certain certain filters that I used to make the custom 5.1 DTS-HDMA LOTM audio track where I have restored some of the dynamic range and fidelity - synced
English 2.0 PCM from the NTSC Laserdisc - synced
German 5.1 DD from the Region 2 DVD - synced to 23.976fps
French 5.1 DD from the 1080i French HDTV copy (same video source) - synced
Italian 2.0 DD from the Region 2 DVD - synced to 23.976fps
Czech 2.0 DD from the Region 2 DVD - synced to 23.976fps
Spanish 2.0 DD from the Region 2 DVD - synced to 23.976fps
Polish 2.0 DD from the Region 2 DVD - synced to 23.976fps
Hungarian 2.0 DD from the Region 2 DVD - synced to 23.976fps
Portuguese 2.0 DD from the Region 4 DVD - synced
Russian 2.0 DD from the Region 5 DVD - synced to 23.976fps

For now, I only have all of the English tracks synced and will be working on the others over the course of the next few days (it would be quicker if I could get away from my 5 and 2 year old daughters for a moment, LOL) I am also looking for subtitles in numerous languages that will have to be synced to this release as well. For now, I only have English subtitles.

I also want to include the two trailers for it and the third “RARE” trailer, ALL remastered into HD using actual footage from the 1080p encode that I made. This will be the first time that any of these trailers will have an HD edition and the first time they have been available widescreen;o)

I’m also going to include an HD remastered edition of Coolio’s “Gangsters Paradise” video and three or four (depending on what I can do with sources) live performances of the song by Coolio stretching from 1995 to 2009 where it’s interesting to see how this guy has aged over the years and the fact that L.V. (the big black guy singing the chorus) disappears from the live performances to be substituted by others.

I also have to make cover art and so on, so this will be available for release, hopefully, by the end of the month.

I will post comparison screenshots between the Region 1 DVD and my 1080p encode as well as 1080i source vs my 1080p encode within the next few days. So, I’m waiting to see what you people think of this project and take it from there;o) The next project on the list after this will be the 1983 film “DC Cab” starring Mr. T… but more about that in a couple of weeks;o)

@ faust1103 - The German audio track was a pain in the a** to sync. The only way to fix it is for me to try to re-sync it to the English audio and re-release the entire thing. How badly out-of-sync is it? I'm willing to remedy this and tell you how to remux it back to the "original" release if need be. I apologize for that, I honestly thought that all the audio tracks were synced properly...

That's funny that you are asking about that, as that was the FIRST thing I checked when I got this source because I was curious if they caught that or not. Unfortunately they did, as that part is cropped, as you can see here:

"Z" screener:

the FULL SCREEN source:

You can still see that where he jumps is TOO HIGH off the ground though and in the next couple of frames after this one you can see the entire "ground" that Neo jumps onto bounce a little bit.

The Matrix - FULL SCREEN (NOT PAN&amp;SCAN!) - *RELEASED*
Time

So, to those interested, this was posted over on myspleen by me a few days ago and I just now realized there may be some interest for this here.

So, for the first time since the VHS "Z" screener, we have a FULL SCREEN version of the 1999 movie - "The Matrix" This is thanx to the Ukrainian TV station "ICTV" broadcasting it earlier this year and someone there ripped it and posted it online. There are a couple of copies of this floating around on public trackers, HOWEVER they are in PAL (with the typical 4% speed-up) and ONLY contain the original Ukrainian language track and, optionally, a Russian track over on rutracker...

THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL PAN AND SCAN!!! (see thumbs below)

I went through the best source of this, NOT the one on rutracker (that one is lower video bitrate of 2800kbps), a 4800kbps MPEG2 720x576 25fps interlaced video file and realized that if I want to sync the English audio track to this I will have to make a couple of modifications to the video. (Of course, I de-interlaced the video and slowed it back down to 23.976fps) First off, the first 58 frames were missing (this is mostly just the black and the fade in to the logo) so those frames are completely black and I faded in the first few frames of the actual FULL FRAME source. Then there was a total of 4 commercials throughout the movie, where there were frames missing; last couple before a commercial and first couple after the commercial. These, I just doubled to keep in-sync with the audio. First commercial is at 11:57, the last couple of frames of Neo in the club and the first couple of frames of the alarm clock are doubles and it's not really noticeable. At 44:22, the last couple of frames where Neo pukes are doubled, the couple of black frames are re-inserted and the first couple of frames of next fade in were missing, subsequently making the fade in two frames later, so no doubling there and everything still in-sync. Next, at 1:17:23, it will look like there is a bad-transition in a dual-layer DVD, meaning, there is a duplicate for 28 frames of the last frame there, right after The Oracle tells Neo "...you'll feel right as rain." and the first 34 frames of the next scene, where Neo and Morpheus are getting ready to leave, are a duplicate of the first frame available after the commercial. The reason I did this is to keep in-sync with audio and because there is no other FULL SCREEN source to replace those frames (and the VHS screener would be too obvious, LOL). It's not bad, it just looks like it pauses a little at the scene change. And the last, is at 1:54:09, the last frame, with Agent Smith in the subway, is a double, then two black frames are re-inserted, and the first frame of Trinity getting ready to pick up the pay phone is a double. Also, the entire end credits were missing, the source cuts of a couple of black frames after Neo flies off into the sky at the end of the film, so I cropped those to 4:3 from the bluray, just to keep the same length of entire film. I encoded all of this into a 4:3 AR 720x576 AVC @23.976fps @~5900kbps. I included the Cinema DTS in 5.1 DTS-HDMA as the primary audio and the 5.1 640kbps AC3 audio from the bluray. I included the English subtitles and inserted the chapters with the titles, muxed it all into an MKV and "ta-da." What makes this edition interesting is that, unlike the open-matte edition of this film that's floating around, this UNFORTUNATELY has the new, crappy bluray COLOR-TIMING:(
Still, it's awesome to have this, because it's a very different way to watch the film, being able to see so much MORE in most scenes.

Here are thumb comparisons between the Bluray VS FULL SCREEN:

and thumb comparisons between the open-matte VS FULL SCREEN:

if anyone wants more detailed comparisons, I can post them, this was just a quick screenrip from one of the original source posts (the one on rutracker) to show the differences;o)
