Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

I had a Future idea for a clean up.

But it would require getting more prints and scanning them.

(So reel 3 and reel 4 are the problem?)

But the idea is every print has its own dirt, scratches and grain.

If you have too prints of ever frame, you can use software clean it up to look more like a 2th generation as a pose to a 3th generation print

That's basicly what they do in film restoration labs if they don't have the originals. They take ~5 films. Take the best frames of every single one of them. And then they adjust contrast and such so that it all matches. Making a very good looking print.

Also keep in mind when I talk about "dirt" I mean physical scratches and well...dirt on the film. Now apparently the blu-rays (like I said I havent actually seen the blu-rays yet) may have scrubbed a little TOO much grain off which is kinda lame. But originally I simply meant scratches etc. Just so we're also clear on that.

As for the perspective of someone my age. I see the cgi as sort of a travesty.
Compare the movie to a beatles song. Changing the color pallete is somewhat equal to doing a remaster. Some people will like it, some won't. But overall it's stil the same song. Just with a "different" feel to it. What George Lucas is doing however, is more comparable to John Lennon deciding Yoko Ono was also part of the band, and permanently mixing her voice into the song.

Well the scratches coming up later was kind of the point I was trying to make.

Anyway I think you’re confusing my “vision” for what can be done with the footage with the idea that I want it to be the main focus here.

35mm certainly has alot of potential of looking awesome. In particular I’m surprised by how good some of the desert shots look (the stil images). Altough it looks like mos eisley spaceport might be a little grainy.

Ya know now I watched the trailers a couple of times. The "Dirt" is kinda growing on me. Wouldn't say that it's not worth at all trying to "fix" the blu-rays using footage from this. But this version will definitely be worth watching on its own.

Also keep in mind, unlike most of you I'm only 19 years old. So I didn't really grow up with the originals the same way most of you would've.

To each their own. I'd stil like to see apropriate scenes cleaned up real good and inserted instead of the cgi footage though. (I'm not so much a "purist" as I'm someone who really really hates not having good high def footage of the movies with no cgi )

And yes this should look great once it comes out.

On a side note: I once saw this documentary on scanning film. I think they projected from within an emulsion. The emulsion had aprox. the same "thickness" as the emulsion on the film. This mean that alot of the emulsion scratches were physicly filtered. Is this something worth looking into?

So you’re saying people don’t “agree” with the blu-rays “feel” so to speak? Due to excessive editing to colors contrast/brightness and that this was done heavily on a frame by frame basis (or even pixel by pixel as you mention)

I was aware of harmy’s project which is why I brought up the de-specialized versions (I messed up and typed de-edit)

The reason I brought up the backup/archiving thing was that whilst I feel that this will be great for having a digital version of the movie to compare changes etc to. It’s not neccesairly the best version to watch in terms of quality. (on acount of the 35mm film simply being somewhat dirty. It stil looks very good though.)
keep in mind that by “archiving this copy” I meant archive the transfer mentioned in this thread.

Man that clip with the machine looks awesome.

So about the trailer.
I assume the interlacing won't be there in the final release? (or is there some technical reason for it)

Also is that about the quality of cleanup we should expect? Or will there stil be more cleanup applied (some kind of digital filter) to clear up even more of the dirt?

Regardless, you guys are awesome and doing great work. Keep it up! :D
