Sequel Trilogy Opinions
Time

Actually I wouldn’t mind rambling about the sequels for a bit. Ed Slushie made really great points which I totally agree with. TLJ definitely has flaws, but I’ve always found them hard to pin down. I actually love Luke’s arc, and I think it fits with his character - I only wish we’d got Colin Trevorrow’s version of Luke haunting Ben in the next film. I think TLJ works fantastic in theory, devoting the film to character development, assigning a planet and a plot to each character. Unfortunately, Finn and Rose’s quest doesn’t actually result in anything plot-wise (although this is a film about failure, so you could argue that it’s deliberate) and to achieve the vacuum situation allowing tension between Poe and Holdo to become the focus, you have to make the First Order look like morons slowly chasing the Resistance across the galaxy for 18 hours. And of course at the end of it all, a single Resistance ship turns around and obliterates their entire fleet, and that’s funny to me (it shouldn’t be).

But I still love the film because it has magical moments and it’s thematically rich. The kind of stuff TROS lacked for me.

TROS was the movie that gave me new perspective on the sequel trilogy. Carried along by the revelations, I enjoyed it on a first watch, but later found it’s not a very rewatchable film. It has a forgettable, video-game like plot, it backtracks on some of the best creative decisions taken in TLJ, it has MAJOR missed opportunities such as a stormtrooper revolution led by Finn, and the climax is over-saturated and over-the-top and I like very little of this movie. Big let-down for me. But I follow a few TROS fans on social media, and they occasionally point out interesting parallels and meaningful interpretations that I never would have thought of, so I don’t entirely dismiss it.

TFA is well-paced, brilliantly edited, and very fun to watch. I had a blast watching it in cinemas in 2015, and living in the UK, it’s been my only experience of people clapping at the end of a film. JJ Abrams managed to honour original trilogy aesthetics and characters while bringing his own distinct style to the movie and making it work. Pretty much all I’ve got to say about it.

Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread
Time

I watched Star Wars with my family the other night and was reminded of something: as Luke, Leia and Han are celebrating and are interrupted by the recovery of an extremely battle-scarred R2 as well as a distressed C-3PO, obviously they stop screaming but - pretty much - Luke just says “He’ll be alright” and they move on VERY quickly. I don’t see much room for doing it another way myself, but I feel like 3PO could have used a bit of emotional support there! It almost spoiled the ending for me this time round.

I suppose it’s the curse of happy endings that many inevitably feel contrived or forced. Still my favourite Star Wars film though.

Is it just the lighting/colour-correction or does this version have a different colour? She looks almost brown or sandy here instead of the more pinkish-purple from the last two episodes. I suppose they might have recoloured the costume/mask after they wrote this character as a female looking for her husband and decided to clarify it by making them blue and pink.

Either way, I think its a great little detail that they decided to flesh out this minor background character for two episodes.

She still looks pink/purple to me, I reckon it’s just that she’s backlit and in a dim and dingy cantina.

The way I see it, either The Child storyline gets wrapped up this season, and the show continues with a new quest alongside the bigger Mandalorians storyline, or it somehow takes 4 seasons to find a resolution for The Child and this happens around the same time that Bo-Katan retakes Mandalore.

I definitely think the inclusion of Bo Katan is the first step in a buildup towards a much wider scope in future seasons where the planet Mandalore itself will be involved. But this season is doing such a great job of portraying Mando and the child as a lovable duo and inseparable pair, I can’t see Din actually leaving him behind, but I’ve no idea how else it would work out.

However, they’ve setup a really interesting future conflict. Someday, Bo-Katan will be in the same room as The Armourer, and both of them will be claiming to be the true and rightful keeper of The Way. When that time comes, which side will Mando choose?

I bet Din is very bitter towards the Armourer right now for suggesting there is only one way to be a Mandalorian. It’s clear he had no idea he was part of a cult, and now he’s realising that Mandalorian armour is earned, instead of it being a birthright.

Time

Is it bad that I was almost as excited to see a live-action Gozanti cruiser as I was to see live action Bo Katan? And that’s not saying anything about my excitement levels for Bo Katan.

Seriously, that was, that was awesome. I was in danger of breaking my teeth I was grinning so hard during that episode. Katee Sackhoff knocks Bo Katan’s live action debut out of the park, cinematography and world-building great (Trask is such an iconic new location!), the Cruiser was a great setpiece and had well-staged fight scenes, and it’s also worth mentioning they resolved the story of frog lady very nicely. I liked the ‘baby yoda eats eggs’ jokes well enough, but I hope a lot of those who didn’t now feel that baby yoda’s redeemed himself a bit, after seeing how guilty he is!

The prospect of the secret “fleet” that we almost got to see, as well as Ahsoka’s namedrop, has me very excited. I was expecting that latter moment since the bar scene, and even before season 2 released I theorised that Bo Katan would direct Mando to Ahsoka (or even vice versa), but finally hearing it set in stone is gratifying as hell. Huge congratulations to Bryce Dallas Howard, Jon Favreau, and the lot of those geniuses at Lucasfilm. This is the way.

What's the most pointless Wookieepedia article?

This really isn’t worth throwing a tantrum over. Yeah, it’s dumb article that doesn’t need to exist, but I’d hardly call it offensive.

Not in and of itself no, but I’m just saying that the fact it exists at all and articles for ‘penis’ or whatever don’t (and also the way the moderators threw such a tantrum over it staying), has contributed to a lot of women feeling that wookieepedia isn’t all that inclusive. But you’re right, it’s not even worth debating over, I just wanted to make a point about making sure everyone’s welcome in fandom. I’ll shut up now.

What's the most pointless Wookieepedia article?
Time

Hey guys
I really didn’t want to get off topic again, but just out of interest because we were talking about it…
The ‘breasts’ article is actually very controversial, and there are very good points made in this article about why it’s a symptom of wider sexism in the Star Wars fandom. Other non-relevant articles have been removed, but this one has stayed, and let’s be honest it’s not because of some desperate need for biological fact pages on wookieepedia.

https://clubjade.net/why-the-wookieepedia-article-on-breasts-is-a-big-deal/

Women get driven out of fandom all the time because online sites and forums start feeling like all-male spaces, and it’s usually down to immature fanboys not being considerate.
If you’re as much of a time-waster as I am, here’s a near 20-minute video by Eckhartsladder on the history of the topic.
https://youtu.be/KWuPOKWrjAk

I hereby pledge not to talk about breasts on this thread ever again. I’m an editor on wookieepedia now, but it’s fair to say I’m leaving that article well alone just in case I accidentally stir up another internet controversy.

The Music Discussion Thread

I’m very sad that not all tracks are included in TCW S7 OST. This isn’t the OST, this is the “Best of”! Why were the other tracks unreleased?

I wonder who at Walt Disney Records is in charge of compiling these albums and arranging them for release? I just want to talk.

Seriously, where are some of the best electronic tracks from the Siege of Mandalore episodes, as well are the entire soundtracks for Star Wars rebels seasons 3 and 4?
And, really music nerdy thing, but I want the version of ‘Ahsoka Duels the Inquisitors’ with the opening that appears in the actual episode. I want it.

The answer is no. Spending one third of the film on his rescue just to kill him would have been beyond stupid.

This never occurred to me before. I suppose that plot point helped make Empire great but constrained Kasdan and Lucas quite a bit… no matter what, you’re going to have to devote a significant portion of the film to the rescue attempt so it doesn’t come off as half-arsed, which gives less time for the other things you want to build up to. Part of why I think ROTJ is a great final chapter is it coped with this very well.

Mando EP2: Search for the Jedi [V2 RELEASED]

Chapter 9 is basically its own mini-movie. I also agree, as absolutely stellar as that episode is, including the Krayt dragon plot needlessly would harm this edit. Perhaps this occurred to you, but maybe you could at least hold off taking the Gunslinger dogfight from Vergence in the Force until season 2 has finished, just in case we get another dogfight you could use?

Really love that logo by the way.

Should Han have died in ROTJ?

HanWasTheOnlyOneToShhot said:

Dont get me wrong I love Han in Jedi… but I think Han should have died in Empire. I think if Han died in Empire it would leave an emotional impact in ROTJ. Think about it If Han died and the emperor won Han would have died for nothing. It adds another driving point to defeat the empire.

To be honest, I kind of think that would’ve felt a disservice to Han. I think it would feel like all the dialogue and characterisation that went towards making him likeable in Empire, as well as the romance plot with Leia, was in the end just a set-up so that Han could be used as a plot device to make the Empire even more hated in the next film. If he was killed off so suddenly, and dying without ‘payoff’ for his character, it would have FELT like a lack of respect for his character, even not necessarily so.

I agree that having more of an emotional investment in seeing the Empire defeated would have made ROTJ even better, but in particular that would be directed towards Vader, being the one who effectively killed Han. Unless you’re thinking of a totally different death scene for Han than carbon-freezing-gone-wrong?

Oh and just in case, please don’t think that as the creator of this thread I’m trying to put your idea down, I think it’s a great suggestion and I’m just trying to bounce ideas around in here. Come to think of it, maybe this should go in the script rewriting section…

What's the silliest name in Star Wars?
Time

It’s a testament to the worldbuilding of Star Wars that we’re introduced to characters with names like Count Dooku and still take them seriously.

Sith names in the prequels always particularly stood out for me. Darth Maul, Darth Tyranus, Darth Sidious… you see a pattern.
Imagine…

“Darth Malevolence?”
“Yes, Darth Evilus?”
“D’you ever consider we might be the bad guys?”

If The Mandalorian continues to impress at this level, it may eventually become my favorite Star Wars of all, even more so than the movies.

Definitely up there with Star Wars and Empire for me. It’s simple enough storytelling, and that’s part of why it’s so compelling. The parent and child dynamic is so quintessential to Star Wars, except now it feels more relevant to real life.

The Clone Wars finale, the Star Wars Rebels finale, and Rogue One are my other favourite pieces of Disney era content and as a matter of fact they’re ALL ‘up there’. If you ask me, it’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan.

Names matter
Time

I call it ‘Star Wars’ too, partly because that was the original name and partly because I think the film is the essence of Star Wars; it encapsulates the feeling of the Star Wars universe to an extent, and at the end of the day, everything else is derivative. But as mentioned above, if you say your favourite movie is Star Wars, people are going to ask which one.

Calling the film ‘Star Wars’ is relegated pretty much to OT purists like us lot on originaltrilogy.com. Let’s treat the official name as Star Wars, but in conversation, refer to it as ANH for handiness.

Should Han have died in ROTJ?
Time

I apologise if there’s already a thread for this, but I did a quick google and didn’t see one. It’s well known that Harrison Ford thought Han sacrificing his life for the Rebellion in Return of the Jedi would be a fitting end to the character arc of selfishness to selflessness begun in 1977 (or maybe he was already fed up of acting in Star Wars films!). Was the character of Han served well enough in ROTJ or would this have been a needed boost of high-stakes and gravitas to the film?

The Original Trilogy - a general Random Thoughts thread
Time

Victory Celebration is, I think, one of the best tracks in all the Star Wars saga (helps that I’ve been playing it a lot today… see current affairs thread!). I could maybe have done without the reminder that gungans exist in Return of the Jedi, but I think the revised ending is far more powerful. It’s a beautiful, nostalgic, and bittersweet piece that’s so perfect to end the trilogy. I like Sebastian Shaw as a force ghost because he has a very warm smile and Anakin’s older self appearing actually makes sense, but say you were doing an episode I-IV movie marathon as George Lucas would no doubt like you to do, seeing Hayden Christensen as that little connection between trilogies must feel quite a payoff.
