What is Luke's goal in ROTJ?
Time

To Emperor, Vader at that point (as well as death star and imperial fleet) was just a tool (disposable asset) to bring Luke to the dark side and become his successor. Emperor's plan was proceeding perfectly. If Luke continued and engaged in a fight with Emperor he would just fall to the dark side and let the Emperor achieve his final goal. That way he remained a Jedi (even if it meant his death) and at the same time did not let Emperor win.

My theory is that Yoda and Obi-Wan never realistically hoped that Luke could beat the Emperor. I think their plan was exactly what happened in the end. To them Luke was just a tool to trigger Anakin's return who would be able to kill the Emperor. That's why Yoda told Luke that he would only become a Jedi after facing Vader again.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

You can make the argument that Lucas co-directed Jedi, but not Empire.

Fair enough, we weren't arguing about Empire, but for Jedi Marquand was a mere executor.

Well if Marquand was a mere executor in Jedi, then Kershner was a mere executor in Empire.

Even then, Kershner was around to give his blessing. Altering a film whose credited director has been dead since 1987 is more of a gray area.

Well it is safe to say that allowing him to give "his blessing" was merely a nice gesture. I highly doubt Lucas would not proceed with the changes if he objected them.

 IIRC, the Director's Guild, (which George had conflicts with and quit of course) has very specific criteria, as the issue of who really directed a film has come up on other productions.

You can make the argument that Lucas co-directed Jedi, but not Empire.

Who cares about DGA. Under their criteria being a co-director isn't even possible. Definition of "director" can vary anyway. What I was trying to say was that Lucas was (overall) the principal author of both Empire and Jedi.

What if TFA is awful?

-the way he put faces VERY CLOSE to the frame is painful to watch, making the resulting screen look cropped. I think he said they look more "intimate", but they just look bad compositions to me;

-I understand quickly switching between shots is useful to give a sense of tension, but during gunfights he completely abused of this "trick", making half of the time hard to tell what is really going on;

-to this, add "lens flares": they're so strong (especially in the helicopter scene), that basically cover almost half the screen, making hard to se what's going on (though Abrams recently said he is aware of this issue and he's going to use them less);

-camera shaking: common "trick" to make the scene look live and add tension. He shaked it half the times so much (even when unnecessary) that it kind of gives you headache (again, helicopter scene).

Good post. I hate all those things as well. They seem like poor attempts by someone who cannot make a good scene in a proper way.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 vs 2. Which do you like more?
Time

I would go for KOTOR1 easily. The story and characters feel more "Star Wars" like.

I prefer the setting and planets in KOTOR1 as well. They are much more visually beautiful and this a huge factor for me.

KOTOR2 has too many ridiculous concepts to my taste (ridiculously powerful villain, immortal villain, etc.).

I would however have much more trouble to pick a favourite between KOTOR1 and original SWTOR story-related content.

How you pictured Anakin pre-PT

From an audience perspective everyone having the potential to wield the Force is more attractive.

These films were designed to appeal to children of all ages so gifting that audience with that potential (albeit fictional) is an aid to making an empathic bond with the protagonist.

We aren't meant to relate to nobility but look up to them. We are meant to relate to boy and girl next door characters.

Having it a skill that only a bloodline of mutants can do is sort of half there because the little kid in the audience may be able to imagine themselves a potential mutant lacking a Jedi Master.

You missed the point...

As I said, the gift should be rare and random. And random implies it can happen to anyone with an equal chance (so yes, farm boys included). The "rare" part makes it unique and appealing, while "random" part makes the possibility that it could happen to you (a casual person).

If something is too accessible, then its loses its appeal. Kids seem to like superhero concept, which is usually the above-mentioned concept: rare and random.

I don't have much problem with TPM Anakin. Of course they could get a better actor and make everything less childish. The main problem is Anakin in AOTC and ROTS, where he is just an annoying unlikeable jerk. I can't think of more a disgusting character in any other film I have seen.

Arguably the pre-ROTJ Force was such a merit based power. The reason we don't have Jedi is we don't have Jedi masters to school us in the Force. Even a farm boy on a planet in the middle of nowhere can become a Jedi.

In ROTJ the power of inheritance is introduced and Luke's sister is a Princess but she is an adopted Princess so she might be still 'low born'.

In the PT Luke and Leia are the offspring of royalty and a demi-God.We have gone from the age of Aquarius back to the age of Dragons. Luke is no longer Uri Geller with Kung-Fu moves, now he's a royal prince with magic blood.

Direct inheritance is a stupid concept, but the concept of anyone being able to become a Jedi if just willing to work hard is just as stupid.

The ability to interact with the force should be a rare random gift. An equivalent to rare gene mutation that makes some humans immune to some disease etc.
