The Soundtrack Thread
Time

The SW soundtracks of course, though I usually only listen to ABC's versions now.  Also Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I really like the first three Harry Potter soundtracks.  That's one thing the later movies are really missing, that wondrous John Williams vibe that made the early ones so great.  Prisoner of Azkaban in particular is a phenomenal score, and 'A Window to the Past' is one of the best things he's ever written.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrZB9nPMvS4

Also have Jerry Goldsmith's score for Alien, the complete 2-cd Intrada set.  An incredible, mostly atonal work, filled with amazing and inventive sounds that perfectly represent the frightening and foreign imagery.  It's pretty much a crime against music in general that this score was cut up and hardly used in the movie itself--I think it would have been a much better film if they had gone with it as composed.  Goldsmith and Scott completely disagreed on what the tone of some parts of the movie should be, and were never able to resolve this in a satisfactory way, to the film's great loss.  The very end, in particular, would have been much better sounding like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nju3ZQnRyHI&feature=related&fmt=18

(apologies for less than stellar youtube sound quality, of course)

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

My first thought was that it was too blue, but after looking at the '04 version again, I hardly think so, as it's nowhere near that extreme, and being completely white is not right either.  Seems like it's in the right vicinity colour-wise.

You might want to consider bringing the white level down for this scene and some of the subsequent shots of Luke lost in the snow.  With the blue levels in the '04 being out of control, the over-brightness of the image isn't obvious; but once the colours get back where they should be, it's easier to see (even more so in adywan's version since he reduced the blue more than you did).  Of course we all know the GOUT is hardly an ideal reference, but the snow scenes aren't nearly so bright in that.  And Han does say it's getting dark out there, after all.  ;)

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)
Time

I hate to say it, but I found the older inserts in the rancor scene to be distracting.  If I put in the GOUT, I can watch the entire scene and not find anything to be wrong with it, but seeing it in just a few shots made the quality difference from the surrounding '04 footage very obvious.  Since they are so different from each other, I really think the scene should either be all GOUT or all '04, but not both.  Since I usually don't mind the recomposites if they don't alter the actual content, I definitely lean towards all '04 for this scene.

In other parts of the movie the GOUT inserts stand out less.  Brightening the throne room scenes does improve the lightsabers, but it also brings out video noise in the dark backgrounds and conflicts with non-saber shots in the same set, which go back to being dark again.  Wouldn't it be better to isolate the sabers and just brighten them by themselves, so the rest of the image wouldn't be affected?  I haven't got the faintest idea how to do that myself (lol), but it seems like that would be the way to go.

But despite a few such things, the colour correction of the '04 footage is generally fantastic, and I really liked seeing the high quality picture without the nasty blue cast and oversaturated reds everywhere.

Remix of the Mission: Impossible theme from the 1988 series.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC6LLjZEcsc

To me this is the definitive version of the theme.  I love the 60's arrangement but somehow this manages to be even better.  Damn shame the 80's revival hasn't been released on dvd; the original show was definitely better overall, but I enjoyed this one as well.

The movies wimped out by putting most of the theme in 4/4 time instead of the driving rhythm of 5/4.  But then the movies sux anyway, because they obliterated the entire concept of the show to make room for Tom Cruise's massive ego.  Mr. Phelps as the bad guy?  Seriously?  Peter Graves walked away from the movie as soon as he heard about that, and I don't blame him one bit.

It doesn't have anything to do with it--directly.  But it sure as heck doesn't surprise me that bad taste in one area would also carry over to another.

The 2004 mix being a pile of crap is a pretty commonly held opinion on this forum.  I have, in fact, analysed it in detail, and it's worse even than most people realise.  The sound quality is often very bad, and aesthetically it stomps all over the original sound design and replaces it with a misguided mess that bears only superficial resemblance to what the movie is supposed to sound like.

Doctor Horrible rules.

The ending is typical Joss, he's at a point where I'd be more shocked if he didn't kill someone off, but it was rather necessary to complete the storyline of becoming a villain.

Joss and his brothers have a real knack for coming up with catchy and memorable songs with clever lyrics that can get stuck in your head forever.  See the Buffy musical episode for a comparison . . .

Grievous seemed more menacing and interesting when I was just reading him in the RotS novelisation.

Then I went to the actual movie, and could have died of embarrassment at what I was seeing.  It took a lot of rationalising to make me think that any of that was okay, and that didn't last more than a few months before how rubbishy it was completely sunk in.

The Matthew Wood thing is just the icing on the cake.

Yeah, the pitch difference is very obvious if you compare them one after another.  I can immediately tell when I hear an audio sample from Star Wars that has been sped up, because I'm so used to it at the correct speed--it's most obvious in the music and in people's voices.  I do not have perfect pitch, not even close--I've known people who do, and they have much more sensitive hearing than me--but I do have a good memory for sound.

I listen to a lot of Baroque music played on period instruments (Bach, Vivaldi, etc), and these ensembles often use older methods of tuning that pre-date equal temperament, and typically tune about a semitone lower than standard concert pitch, so their renditions of otherwise well known pieces come out sounding quite different than the modern ear is generally accustomed to.  Going back and forth between the two can be somewhat jarring . . . but it's easy to get used to it being a certain way and then forget that it doesn't always sound like that.

Children: Discipline and the Consequences or Lack Thereof
Time

Beating kids is a pretty freakin' awful thing to do--it's tyranny by those who have power against those who don't.  I find it to be the height of ignorant arrogance for so-called 'adults' to think that causing pain and humiliation is the only way to teach any kind of moral lesson.  While it's true that the threat of force can be a powerful motivator to refrain from doing wrong, ultimately it only breeds fear and mistrust, and when the self-will of the child becomes strong enough, their need to rebel and strike back will drive them to increasingly outlandish displays of defiance.  In turn, they will repeat the cycle of tyranny against their own children.

It's much more beneficial to make a serious effort to treat children as real people who can understand why something is wrong, building a strong foundation for them to be able to make good decisions, rather than simply instilling a Pavlovian response with no real comprehension behind it.  A certain level of threat and use of power is always going to be present in parent-child relationships, but it must be tempered with restraint and understanding of how they can be affected by its misuse.

I was never hit as a child.  I didn't need to be--unlike some, my parents aren't savages, and they taught me well.  I never got away with nearly as much as other kids, and wasn't even remotely spoiled, but I was never deprived or made to feel worthless or intimidated.  Ultimately, I think I'm a lot better off than people who were.

I don't actually like kids in general all that much, because a lot of them really do seem to be horrid little arse bandits.  But I think their idiot parents are worse, because they clearly had nothing better to do than pump out more units to fawn over as if they were the best thing that ever happened to the world.  Sorry folks, but your little rotscum isn't something that I care about even the slightest bit, and the fact that you had it before you hit 20 just shows how shortsighted you are.  Hell, I'm 26 and I'm still learning to take care of myself, much less anyone else!  Sometimes I really think that people shouldn't be allowed to reproduce unless they've passed some kinds of tests on responsibility and personality and so forth.  They make you jump all kinds of hoops to adopt a kid, but any schmo with working genitals can make one on their own?  How does that make sense?

2006 SE/GOUT hybrid script project - UPDATE: 05-24-11 see 1st & 2nd post...
Time

Hey, this could be pretty cool.  I've been thinking of doing something like this, but didn't really have any idea how to go about it.  Could be even better if g-force scripted footage were used to replace the raw GOUT.  I'm going to have to try this out when I get a chance.

By the way, do you have any screenshots?

You may want to set the Dialog Normalization at -31, instead of -27.  The 5.1 on the SE laserdiscs is already reduced in average level by 4 db compared to the 1993 and 2004 mixes, and leaving the DialNorm at its default value will lower the volume even more.  You can always turn your receiver's volume up more to compensate, but I think it's better not to have to do that.  The simple trickery of DialNorm reduction is one of the things that fools people into thinking AC3 isn't as good as DTS, because they think the dynamics are being compressed even though they aren't really.  Setting it at -31 will mean that the average levels are unchaged during playback.

If there is a Dynamic Range Compression setting in the encoder, I'd recommend disabling it, otherwise anyone without a surround setup will hear a significantly less powerful version of the soundtrack, since Dolby Digital decoders always force the use of DRC in anything less than a five speaker layout.  Only top of the line Denon models can bypass this that I'm aware of.  (This is another thing that makes people think AC3 sounds worse than DTS.)  If you must use DRC, keep it at a light level to avoid compromising the sound too much.  Laserdisc 5.1 tracks had no DRC applied, because the only people who could even access them already had surround systems to begin with; but foolishly most dvd's choose to rely on the player downmixing instead of including a dedicated 2.0 track as the default, so the sound is watered down for the benefit of people watching through tv speakers.

The center and surround downmix settings of -3 db should probably be left alone, because I think this is to make them come out correctly when put into matrixed Dolby Surround.  However, I'm not sure about the 90 degree phase shift setting.  This probably also is intended for optimal downmixing, but I don't know what effect if any it has on normal 5.1 playback.

Make sure your channels are in the right order.  As listed in the window, AC3 wants them to be left, center, right, left surround, right surround, LFE; this is different from the typical multichannel wav layout (left, right, center, LFE, left surround, right surround).

Optionally, you might want to try using the 3 db surround attenuation setting for ESB and RotJ.  Now I don't know whether it's a technical fault or intentional, but to me the rear channel effects in the SE's are way too loud for these two movies (not so much in ANH, though).  It could have to do with the difference in calibration between large theatre mixing rooms and small home theatre variants, or they might have just mixed it that way on purpose--I don't know.  But when compared to the 1993 mixes through Prologic II, the difference is very obvious, and the '93 surround levels seem much more appropriate to my ear.  You could experiment with that and see which you prefer if you're so inclined, or just leave it alone and adjust the levels in your receiver, or not bother at all; it's up to you.  ;)

To censor the language in The King's Speech is pretty much a crime against cinema.  It's extremely important to the emotion and character of the whole thing, and even the plot, and it's not like it was just vulgarity done out of crass buffoonery the way such things often are.  What a bunch of damned idiots . . .
