Last web series/tv show seen
Time

I've heard a bit of speculation that Paul McGann might actually make an appearance in the new series, since there is apparently a new pic of him as The Doctor in a completely different outfit than before--this combined with the reappearance of the previous TARDIS interior is enough to lead some to this conclusion.

I don't know whether I believe that, but it would be really freakin' cool if it were true.  Maybe it would be something about him at the end of the war?

Seeing as I'm left-handed myself, I much prefer Link to be a lefty as well.

However, I've only played Twilight Princess for the Wii, and I use the controls in the right-handed manner because it feels closer to the N64 scheme for Ocarina of Time that I'm accustomed to.  (I don't do it that way to match the visuals.)  At this point I think I would find it really strange to play the Gamecube version, because the entire map is mirrored and I'd be going in the wrong direction all the time, even though the Gamecube layout is the 'correct' one.

Info: The GOUT fixes - A very special thank you to Moth3r
Time

I love how people help each other out here.

A lot of the more recent work builds on contributions from other members who first provided files and postulated ideas for possible concepts and so forth.  It takes a lot of dedication to fix LFL's screwups, but I think this community succeeds admirably, especially given what there is to work with.

Ironically, if not for the contempt shown by the films' creator, many of us would probably have taken them for granted and never been motivated to learn about the technical issues necessary for proper preservation, or uncovered associated talents in so doing.  I don't know if I should really feel particularly happy about that, but there are positive benefits that arise from the state of things being as they are . . .

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

There is not.  The music for that scene was always hacked up in the original version, unfortunately.  However, I made a custom hybrid 5.1 that splices in the '97 mix for that section, so that in every way it is the original except with the music cue presented intact.  Linked to on megaupload at the very bottom of this post: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-1977-70mm-sound-mix-recreation-stereo-and-51-versions-now-available/post/403997/#TopicPost403997

Sorry for taking up space in your thread, Harmy, but I wanted to make sure he saw it.  ;)  Further discussion of this topic should take place in the 70mm thread.

Quite so.  D1 tape is digital component video with 4:2:2 chroma.  The GOUT still wouldn't look as good as that, of course, since mpeg2 compression of a noisy image will bollocks it up with compression artefacts in some spots even with a high bitrate, but it's definitely closer to the source than anything else.

The master tape was referred to as D1 in the Widescreen Review article that discussed the creation of the 1993 audio mixes.  Surprising that they'd use that instead of the composite D2 format, which was more commonly used due to cost and lower bandwidth requirement, but I guess they wanted to do the thing properly.  D1's resolution is listed as 720 x 486, so theoretically the GOUT should reproduce all its detail; though there are reports of blurring and IVTC errors in some spots, so perhaps it wasn't really transferred to dvd as well as it could have been.  And then there's that weird discrepancy between RotJ's image detail in the PAL and NTSC dvd's, and who knows what would account for that . . .

But the 1993 master is very screwy in many ways regardless of what source it's viewed on--that much is certain.  ;)

Any idea what G-force's script (or a modified version thereof) would do to these captures?

As far as the GOUT generally appearing better, remember that in addition to being an earlier generation copy, the master tape according to THX was a D1 with component video, as opposed to the more commonly used D2 and the laserdisc format itself, which use composite.

Majora's Mask has a lot of really cool ideas, but I've never been able to get into it as much as others.  It's so damn confusing and the time limit cramps my style, because it's really annoying to have to keep doing parts over again if you run out.  (Yes, I do know about slowing down time with the altered ocarina song--it helps but not completely.)  I still haven't managed to sustain interest in it long enough to get all the way through the whole game, but eventually I guess I will.

Tingle is annoying as shast, too.  :p

What is your favorite versions of the following movies: Apocalypse Now, Alien, Aliens, Blade Runner and Terminator 2?
Time

I don't think it was hiding away in the shuttle because it was dying.  That doesn't make any sense to me.

I do, however, agree that its dragging away Dallas and Brett to turn them into eggs is extremely cool; so much so that I find the whole concept of the queen in the sequel to be kind of a let-down for shunting this idea off and ignoring it.  Aliens is a good movie to be sure but it doesn't always jive with the way things were presented in the first one, or with other ideas that were more clearly stated in the original script.

The cocoon scene in the director's cut of Alien does interrupt the pacing, making it an inferior version of the movie to the theatrical release; but contrary to what many seem to think, it doesn't screw up the pace just for the fact that it exists.  Rather, the reason it doesn't work is because they put it into the wrong part of the movie altogether.  The scene is scripted and shot to happen before Ripley activates the self-destruct, but inexplicably the re-edit places it after, which makes it seem very bizarre indeed that she would stop and have a chat or even bother to torch them at all when the ship is going to explode in a few minutes!  All the logic of the scene goes right out the window with it edited this way.

A proper fan-edit could put it back where it belongs to greater effect; but it would have to take care to eliminate the background alarm sounds for the impending self-destruct from the mix in order to make it work.

According to the liner notes for the Intrada score release, the workprint scored by Jerry Goldsmith did have a version of this scene (and in its proper place), but that Dallas and Brett were nowhere to be found--Ripley only came across alien eggs and growths on the walls, and torched those.  The music cue for this unused version of the scene begins similarly to the also-unused cue for when Kane first found the eggs on the planet, a sort of pulsing 'liquid' sound made by plucked strings recorded through an echoplex.  Like so much of the music Goldsmith wrote for Alien, none of this is heard in the finished film at all, which is an absolute disgrace.

I usually can't kill Desann any way at all without cheating.

His Force powers are maxed out to truly ridiculous levels, and his one-handed Strong style attack is way faster than what you can do back at him.  And there's no Absorb or Protect like there is in Jedi Academy--it's one of the most unfair fights I've ever seen.  I've even tried the column thing but could never make it work.

I tend to cheat on the Force powers, because it makes the game more fun.  I usually use a mod I found called More Reborn, which causes many more enemies throughout the game to be Dark Jedi, so it's much more exciting and interesting.

There's another mod that lets you play the Outcast levels in Academy, so you can use the dual-sabre and other improvements, which is really neat.

That was The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov; adapted for radio by putting it onto a piece of wood and banging a few nails through it.  Mr L. N. Stool-Sample is now appearing in the Thames near Whopping Step, and Mr R. S. Polevaulter is appearing as a central tunnel support on the new Victoria Line.

And now, Radio Four will explode.

Jabba vs. Dancer...
Time

I agree.  The re-edit of the scene ruins it in more ways than just the loathsome music replacement.

In addition to what's mentioned above, they also took out the howls of gleeful anticipation from Jabba and his flunkies as they prepare to watch her be devoured, making this moment of sickening debauchery seem oddly silent.

Help: looking for... 35mm Stereo Mix - by Belbecus, from the 1985 LaserDisc.
Time

This one, I think.  In addition to the mono and 1993 mixes.

The only actual difference in content the 1985 version has from the 1977 stereo is that they added the C-3PO line about the tractor beam, which previously had only been in the mono mix.  Other than that there's no difference except for the stereo image reportedly being wider and a possible increase in fidelity due to the remastering.

I grew up with the 1985 mix on vhs, so going back to the original is just how I remember it aside from that one line.  The 70mm is also very familiar, because while it has much greater dynamic range and bass presence, there are only a few minor changes in sound effects from the stereo mix.

The 1997 version does not come from any previous mix directly, but it's clear that the original tracks were used for most of it, because it still has that familiar sound of Star Wars in stereo for the parts that aren't changed significantly.  However, it generally doesn't come off as well as the 70mm version, because its dynamic range is usually somewhat lower, and its EQ tends towards emphasis of the high frequencies, which makes it sound a bit tinny and sometimes exposes noise in the source elements that was previously better masked.  (That's probably why they wanted to remix again in 2004, but we all know how horribly that turned out.)

You didn't have a hard time with Dark Link?  Man . . .

The first N64 version has a weird glitch where you can just stand on the little island in the middle and wail on him with the Megaton Hammer, and for some reason he usually won't fight back as long as you don't Z-target him.  This seems to have been removed from subsequent versions (along with dumb things like the change to the Fire Temple music).  I used to do it that way because he was too blasted difficult otherwise, but eventually I fought him properly, which required fairies and liberal use of Din's Fire.  Pretty quickly I learned never to use the stab move because he jump-slashes whenever you try, taking two hearts instead of the usual one, and he can block most of your other moves as well.  How did you defeat him so easily?

The first time I saw a picture of Andrew Robinson without Cardassian makeup, I very nearly didn't recognise him.  It's much easier to make out in that picture, although I'm still not sure if I would have known who he was right away if I'd come across him suddenly like that.

My girlfriend and I saw Enrico Colantoni at the Philadelphia airport a couple years ago (he played the dad in Veronica Mars, and one of the aliens in Galaxy Quest).  We didn't say anything, since it would have been awkwardly weird to do so, particularly as it would have involved interrupting a lengthy conversation he was having with a friend, but we couldn't help staring a bit.

I like to think that meeting someone of whom I'm a big fan would result in me remaining calm and collected and making some sort of intelligent remark, but more likely I'd just not say very much, with some possibility of coming out with inane babble.  I've never actually gone to any sort of convention for these things, but I have on occasion wondered what it would be like to meet Summer Glau and what I'd want to say if that happened.  ;)  Given that she always has the exact same facial expression in every photo with fans, it's hard to tell what she really thinks of them; if her appearance on The Big Bang Theory is anything like real life, she seems to have a surprising amount of patience.  lol

In the middle of the dreaded Water Temple...I enjoy a challenge but it's just plain annoying but at least this time I've got a general idea where I'm going, even if my memories are from a very long time ago.

And if those memories are accurate it goes back to being fun and challenging once it's out of the way.

I assume you're referring to Ocarina of Time?  I played through it a few months ago and it was as awesome as ever.  I was surprised that I remembered what to do in the Water Temple as well as I did, given how confusing it is, but for some reason I never found it to be as bothersome as many apparently do.  The main trouble is just finding all the damn small keys, and the way you have to keep raising and lowering the water level in order to do so.  Actually, the part I hate most is at the end, when you have to go up the steep incline while avoiding the sliding spike things.  Ugh.

I'm quite a fan of Legend of Zelda in general.  Ocarina is still my favourite, with A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess not far behind.  Midna is my favourite character (easy to guess from my avatar).  The ending to TP makes me a lot sadder than it really should, but I can't help it.  I probably put more thought into Zelda as a whole than a game series really deserves, but . . . well, it's just that damn good!

Right now I'm slowly making my way through Super Mario RPG on the Virtual Console.  I loved this game as a kid and adore it still.  It's like the ultimate blend of Mario platforming and Final Fantasy turn-based combat; fitting since it was made by Square.  Shame characters like Mallow, Geno, and the Smithy Gang never got to reappear in any subsequent Nintendo games.
