Star Wars Laser Disc Audio Archive (Released)
Time

The new version of ESB in 5.1 (with Bluray-derived LFE and improved surround decoding) already exists, and can be found on v2.0 of the Despecialized Edition.  It will also appear on dark_jedi's new release when that is completed.  A new version of RotJ is also on the way.

I haven't released the audio tracks separately yet because I wanted to put them together in a collection when they're all finished.

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' - bluray and colour timing changes (Released)
Time

Yet again, I must bring up the fact that the low fade 35mm print of Raiders that turned up on eBay a while ago clearly showed a color timing that was very similar to the Bluray.

This film has always been gold-tinted.  Always.  The Bluray transfer is an attempt to recreate the original color timing, though since it was done digitally and not photochemically, it may not have always turned out exactly the same.  But it's in the ballpark, and its intentions were in the right place.

What you see on these other transfers is more akin to what was shot on the negative, before the initial color timing for interpositive would have taken place.  It also does not take into account that projection bulbs from that era were much warmer in tone than they are today.  The wowow transfer may be an accurate representation of what was actually photographed, but it does not represent how the film would have looked in theatres when it first came out.

This whole controversy reminds me of the time before Technicolor print references became available for Star Wars, and we didn't know what that film actually looked like originally.  Everybody thought the grey appearance of the Death Star on earlier home video releases was how it should have been, only to be disproved when it turned out the Death Star was actually quite blue in a lot of shots all along.  If the pictures from the eBay auction were to be posted here, the Bluray's undeniable resemblance to the film print could be seen by everyone.  I really wish now that I had saved them . . .

Doctor Who
Time

I thought it was awesome.  I wondered weeks ago if that was who she was, but didn't expect they actually would go there.  I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be true.

Pretty sure they did it to mess with the minds of those who have been demanding a woman be cast as the next Doctor.  "Well, how about a female Master instead?"  I can totally see them cackling evilly over this idea when they came up with it.  ;)

Of course this begs the question of how the Master managed to escape from Gallifrey (where he presumably ended up the last time we saw him) when it got hidden away in another universe.  My theory at this time is that it has to do with that business on Trenzalore: the signal from the Time Lords wanting to come through may, in fact, have just been him.

Even the Doctor's extended life cycle granted him by the Time Lords may have been the Master's doing.  After all, he is known to have once said, "A cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about."  That would sure be an interesting twist . . .

Teaming up with the Cybermen is a very Roger Delgado thing to have done, and the warped notion of 'heaven' seen in this episode was creepifying as all hell.  "Don't cremate me," indeed.  Yikes!

Star Wars Laserdisc Preservations. See 1st Post for Updates.
Time

I was having some unexpected difficulty getting the '97 DTS to sound correct, but I think I've pretty much nailed the calibration now.  Part of the problem was my own mistake in setting up the signal flow, so once I realized the error, things went much more smoothly.  I'll do a final listening test to make sure everything is in order, and then I'll send it over as a 5.1 DTS-HD MA.

Come to think of it, it would probably be a good idea to verify the synch before committing to it fully.  Althor, if you can provide me with a Quicktime file of your video, I'll bring it in to my Pro Tools session and make sure it's all lined up at the reel changes.  I don't need anything fancy in terms of pixel resolution or bitrate—a small standard definition file will do the trick.  It just needs to have a frame rate of 23.976 since I've already converted the audio to play at this speed.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

Belbucus made the first GOUT-synched PCM tracks for all three films using the 1993 mixes, and all three are synched to the NTSC versions.  These are what I've used for the 5.1, and I'd like to continue to do so.

Don't forget that my audio tracks aren't just for these releases alone: I intend them to ready for use in any GOUT-synched fan project.  Making multiple versions to accommodate different video frame counts confuses the issue and is logistically impractical.  The addition or removal of video frames is far easier than changing the edit of every audio track.  Also, dark_jedi has stated that his version of RotJ will be NTSC-synched despite using the PAL as the video source.

As I recall, there are two places in which the PAL and NTSC copies of RotJ differ.  The first is at the end of the shot of the rebel fleet, after Luke's conversation with Ben: the NTSC is missing two frames here.  The other happens during the Ewok battle; in this case, the PAL is missing one frame.  I believe both are reel changes, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

The first difference can be solved by removing the two frames from the end of the shot to match the NTSC.  The second can probably be solved by doing nothing, since it seems likely the Bluray would contain this frame which the PAL lacks.

Another thing to watch out for is whatever caused an extra frame to appear at the beginning of ESB 2.0.  It seems to me that consulting with Darth Mallwalker to confirm that the video is accurately GOUT-synched before release would be a good idea, since he is very good at that sort of thing.

Anyone else blase' about the New trilogy?
Time

Klasodeth said:

Let's just say I'm a lot more excited for Harmy's upcoming version of Return of the Jedi than I am for Star Wars: Episode VII.

I feel the same way.  I'm certain the new films won't be as much of a letdown as the prequels, but that's not really saying a whole lot.

For me, overwriting the Thrawn trilogy automatically starts them off with 2.95 strikes against them.  I have far more respect for Timothy Zahn as a storyteller than I do for Jar Jar Abrams, and it won't take much to strike out completely.

On some level, I think I actually want them to suck.  The worse they are, the more easily I can disregard them.

Star Wars 1997 DTS CD-ROMs (Released)
Time

I've recently been investigating the differences between home audio playback and the way a DTS CD-ROM is decoded on the equipment of a movie theater; specifically, to find the best possible method of deriving the LFE signal that is embedded in the surround channels.

I think I'm very close to getting it right, since I've been able to get the DTS version of The Empire Strikes Back to sound extremely similar to the Dolby Digital version from the 1997 laserdisc.  At this point it's mostly a matter of how to apply what I've done (using Pro Tools and iZotope Ozone 5) to settings that will work in other software.

Was Han Solo stupid?
Time

Very true.  Many people in the press and the general public don't have any sense of boundaries when it comes to pestering an actor about a character they play, and the tiresome repetition of having to fend this off for years on end would surely sour anyone on it, even if they legitimately enjoyed something at the time it was first made.

Thinking back, I now remember hearing that he was at the 30th anniversary screening of Empire, which was after the conversation referenced in the article took place, and that he enjoyed seeing the film again for the first time in 30 years, so perhaps that put him on a path of beginning to think better of his character again?
