It comes down to the bizarre perception that in their original forms, older works somehow just aren't 'good enough' for a modern audience.

Part of that has to do with the inclination to think that newer is automatically better, and part of it is an inability to distinguish between the degradation of source materials over time vs. whatever flaws it may or may not have had when it was first produced.

A lot of the blame for this rests squarely on Lucas himself.  By creating the special edition in the way he did, he opened the door for others to follow.  He's the one who first put the thought of changing films out there in the first place, and since ideas are pretty much impossible to eradicate, this way of thinking has spread to an alarming degree.

No no, what Frink intended by suggesting the group-orgy was for everyone to have sex with everyone else.  That's the only way to be sure this will work, and that the tension will be properly dispersed in order to prevent future arguments.

I proposed role-playing so that those disinclined to be aroused by other men could pretend to be having sex with women instead.  Naturally this means that some of us will have to pretend to be women for their benefit.

If we do this right, no one will even realize that twister111 wasn't a man pretending to be a woman in the first place.

The Dark Knight Trilogy - Theatrical Preservation. (* unfinished project *)

My memory of Batman Begins in the theater from 2.5 years ago is that the colors showed very little difference, if any, from the Bluray.  The triple-feature screening at the Cine Capri I attended was of all three films in 2.35:1 ratio throughout.

Given the information and anecdotes in this thread, I'm starting to think that the Imax and 35mm versions may well have had different colors from each other, due to the simple fact of their having been made at different times with different processes and equipment, most of which were analog and therefore not capable of being duplicated exactly with no change every time.

lol  No, because the titles often don't apply this way in other games.  There is no character called "Ocarina of Time", for example.  ;)

Besides, remember the part near the beginning where Midna snidely refers to Zelda as 'twilight princess'?  The player is misdirected into believing the title is in reference to her, not finding out the truth until near the end.  From the way the story is told, Midna manages to drive much of the plot without actually taking over the narration at all, which is quite impressive from a writing standpoint.

Ironically, the lowest point for Link seems to come at the very end of the story, since he apparently gets his heart broken when Midna ditches him.  Both characters are sufficiently well-realized at this point that the words 'devastatingly final' seem an appropriate description for their separation.

This, combined with the above-mentioned sense that he doesn't seem to feel like he belongs in his home village, serve to make Link's ultimate departure from Ordon quite a sad ending to the story.  He rides off into the sunset, quite possibly never to be seen again by anyone in Hyrule.

Twilight Princess definitely has the best character writing of any Zelda game, which is why I felt moved to write about it.  (Skyward Sword left me cold; I was bored and disinterested from the start.)  I do see Link as being a Luke Skywalker type of character, heroic and idealistic and so on—which of course means that Midna is his Mara Jade, sarcastic and cold-hearted but with a hidden decency that becomes more apparent over time.  And red hair, naturally.

In the course of analyzing the story and structure of the game, I made the rather startling discovery that Link is not actually the main character at all.  Instead, he is the narrator, for the story is indeed told from his point of view, but Midna is actually the one the story is really about.

If there is to be a Zelda tv series, it seems doubtful that she would be in it, as they'd probably focus on a more traditional story about the Triforce and Ganon and so on.  I have doubts about whether such a show would be well executed enough to live up to the spirit of the games, but thinking about this now is making me want to write more myself.

You'll never know unless you try it.  ;)

Now we just have to decide who is dominant and who is submissive in this group . . . I vote for Fink's mom to show us how each part is played.

Link being silent is only a construct of the gameplay mechanics, not an actual character attribute.  There are various indications within the games that he actually does speak—it's just that we aren't shown what he says.

I don't necessarily see him as being the most talkative sort, considering he usually lives alone and tends to react to things rather than initiating them, but it would fall completely flat to force a live action version of him to never speak.  In my experience with the world of Zelda fanfic, most of those who write him as silent tend to be unable to conceive of how to convincingly adapt the gameplay into a realistic depiction of the characters and setting.  (There are exceptions, of course; I've seen it done well before, but it's extremely difficult to pull off.)

The Zelda games are hardly the only ones to use the 'silent main character' device, anyway.

A few years ago I spent a lot of time writing a story based on Twilight Princess, and in it I depicted Link as being both soft-spoken and generally disinclined to engage in lengthy conversations, but perfectly capable of expressing himself well when he needs to.

The Philosophy Thread - Where Serious Questions "May" Be Discussed

I believe what Mr. Fry actually meant was that if he believed the god of the bible to be real, he would call him out on his behavior and various failings.  But since he only considers this god to be a particularly capricious and ill-tempered fictional character, he prefers to ignore the idea of supplicating himself to any such notions altogether.

The 35mm shots of the the regraded version all have a strong green tint.  I must say that I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of these scenes looking this way in the theatre.

My memory is not authoritative proof, of course, but their complete lack of familiarity is causing me to be somewhat skeptical that this is how they are actually supposed to look.  As indicated above, it is possible that is reflects an earlier, unfinalized version of the color timing.  It is also possible that the 35mm prints had a different timing than the Imax prints, and that both are 'correct' in their own way.

Since this is after all the 'random thoughts' thread, my random thought is that I am bored with the repressive turn this thread has now taken, and am off to find a random target upon which to practice my screwing, tapping of that, and other ill-considered euphemisms.

I may also, if the mood strikes me, penetrate the rectums of weak-willed females, making them snort like pigs and call me Daddy, while flipping Jesus the bird and forcing them to read 50 Shades of Grey.

No doubt I shall contribute extensively to the moral decay of society in so doing.  Wish me luck . . .

"My mom's a saint!  Go chug some dick!"  :p

. . .

Okay, now that I'm done channeling Stifler in American Pie 2, I'll just say it was a conclusion I came to all on my own, and have never had any reason to talk about in real life.  lol  It's actually something I find a bit alarming myself, not being into pain and all, but I'll stick up for other people's right to express themselves in a way that feels right for them, when some would seek to label them as if they were unhealthy.  The need of empathy towards others to understand where they are coming from is clear in such matters.

It was actually the movie Secretary that first got me thinking about such things.

The PT's influence on today's movies

The Matrix's sequels do have a lot in common with the SW prequels—they are boring, have way too much CGI, and are ultimately pointless.

I don't think The Matrix was ever intended to be anything other than a standalone movie at first.  If you read the script, some interesting backstory is presented: prior to finding Neo, Morpheus had taken in five other people whom he was equally, fanatically convinced were the One, and all five of them died fighting Agents of the system.  (This seemingly unjustifiable conviction led even more weight to Cypher's betrayal of the team.)  Ultimately, this information was not included in the final film, and in the sequels the idea of Neo's "five predecessors" was instead changed to there having been five Ones before him who reset the system to save humanity.  The effect of this was to reduce the idea of the One to a mere pawn of the machines, rather than someone who got sucked into Morpheus' seeming delusions but ultimately turned out to be real.

Since this unused backstory was what the Wachowskis had in mind while making the first film, we can easily see that the plot of the sequels has little resemblance to their earlier ideas.  And since it was the first film that audiences identified with rather than the sequels, the situation is again analogous to the SW prequels, whose changes to the continuity and the deleterious effects this had on quality are well documented.

People who are into BSDM stuff do so with the explicit understanding between those involved that everything that happens must be on an entirely consensual basis.  This consent may be revoked at any time if unwanted discomfort, whether mental or physical, intrudes upon the proceedings.

Further, by having the right to grant and take away consent, the submissive party is actually more 'in control' than the dominant.

Having recently taken in a rather energetic stray cat, I ultimately see it as being not very different from playing with the use of catnip toys and such.  Though their inherent cuteness makes it easy to forget the fact, cats in reality are vicious predators who have a strong instinct to tear apart and eat small animals.  Playing with them allows them to channel their inherent aggression into a non-destructive form, and helps to prevent their unfulfilled desires from turning into what we would deem to be 'bad behaviors', such as scratching and biting of humans.

If you'll follow the analogy, human sexual desire is really not at all different. The behavioral problems that result from prolonged repression of instinct may ultimately turn into real violence towards women if allowed to go unchecked.  People who are into BDSM are frequently misunderstood due to the outwardly aggressive nature in which they express themselves, but if approached from the proper perspective of consent, their form of 'play' is ultimately more healthy than that of many who would presume to judge them.
