Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

The UK had 2 VHS releases ( Pan&Scan and Widescreen) of the 1995 THX versions and also the Superclass ISD Executor Collectors Box. It is very likely all of these had the same audio.

In germany there was no Collectors Box but the also a Pan&Scan and Widescreen release. I watched these tapes all the time but I can't really tell if the pitch was different to the other tapes I previously had. It would make sense that these are pitch corrected like UK versions because the production process should have been the same.

I still have the german 1995 THX tapes, the Executor edition and a german VHS Box from 1992, so I will try to compare the audio.

Does anyone know a good tool for pitch comparision?

AFAIK the vast majority of PAL movies are not pitch-corrected. Especially in the VHS/LD era this was really uncommon. I guess I need to gather more information about this and make a sound comparison first.

@msycamore

Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware of that.

@R2D2

It would be great if you could find your VHS-capture of the opening crawl and end credits. The sceenshots of these looked really nice.

Of course any preservation of the Laserdiscs I want to make will also include all the Logos etc.

Yes, I was about to say that, I'm almost certain you're correct. The original Star Wars trilogy German soundtracks in theaters would not have had any PAL speed-up to the audio.

The only reason that this is added to home video versions is so the audio will match the video frame rate of European tv's that use the PAL format.

So taking the German DD 2.0 soundtracks from the German version of the GOUT, then removing the PAL audio speed-up, and synching them to the U.S. GOUT videos (or taking the German PAL GOUT video and re-sampling the video down to NTSC resolution and frame rate, if you want to keep the German subtitles for alien characters and such) would actually restore the voices to their correct sound as heard in theaters by German Star Wars fans. :)

Synching the German GOUT DD 2.0 soundtracks, with the PAL speed-up removed, to dark_jedi's V3 Star Wars trilogy DVD set video, or his new Blu-Ray HD trilogy set video, would match the German soundtracks with the highest quality original unaltered Star Wars trilogy video possible. That would be so cool! :)

The idea to sync the german audio to the NTSC version is something I wanted to do myself if I decide to make a german theatrical version with the original german crawl and end credits.

But the first thing I want to do are straight preservations of the german 1993 pre-THX and the 1995 THX Laserdisc.

I have done some Laserdisc capturing tests last weekend and I am pretty satisfied with the results. My Laserdisc player may not be the best, but its picture quality is pretty fine and it is enough to make good preservations of the german laserdics.

I have thought about getting a Pioneer CLD-D925 and a better capture card but this is too expensive for me right now.

BTW.:

I now have the german GOUT DVDs and could upload the PAL audio tracks (german 2.0, english 2.0 and spanish 2.0 ) or the complete DVD-Isos to a.b.starwars.

Anyone interested?

@Harmy

Using the GKar or official DVD crawl is probably the best solution right now.

Anyway here are some quick and dirty caps of the german 1982 Pan&Scan LD and 1993 SilverScreen Widescreen LD.

http://www.multiupload.com/P6L9RD2P4Z

http://www.multiupload.com/24PKA5ODPT

Unfortunately the 1982 is in bad condition and has some errors. The transfer also was pretty bad and had a lot of noise to begin with.

The 1993 caps are better but there is not that much resolution.

These caps were quickly made by me without any adjustments or processing. Basically just a test if my player and grabbing card still work.

If I have the time in the next few days I will try to get better caps, but my equipment is pretty limited right now.

@Moth3r

Give me a list of the scenes you want captured and I will see what I can do.

Grisan

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

Hello guys,

I can probably upload the German GOUT audiotracks sometime next week, if you really want it. I will borrow these DVDs from a friend next weekend. I never bothered to buy them myself because I own the German Laserdiscs. Unfortunatly my Laserdisc PLayer (Sony MDP-850D) broke several months ago, so it is time to get a copy of these DVDs.

I still have a Pioneer CLD-S315, but this was cheaper entry level player and it is missing some important features (like S-Video, Optical Audio etc).

I also have the german 1993 SilverScreen Laserdiscs, and the 1982 Episode 4 Pan&Scan Laserdisc (although this one is in bad condition and has many artifacts that make it virtually unusable) that were mentioned in this thread.

Their quality is fine for the most part but the 1995 THX Version is superior except for the opening crawls.

I could capture these LDs and upload them to the newsgroup if someone is interested, but I only have a Phillips SA7134 or Conexant BT878 based grabbing card which are OK but not great. The Phillips card has very good picture quality and produces acceptable result, but I haven't used it in years. I also can't grab the audio in pure digital form. I am trying to get a better Player from Ebay but the good ones are usually way over what I am willing to pay.

Creating a decent german version from the GOUT with some fixes from other sources is something I would really like to do.

Greetings,

Grisan

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Hello,

I am back from the dead.
I am currently changing my cover site to be more dynamic and user friendly. I switched to a php-based Image gallery and I am now asking for feedback and suggestions from you.
It still is in beta phase and I will change some things in the near future.
The new Version can be tested at:

The Quality Broth .NFO files don't say which LD version was used, only "THX".
Grisan, why do you say '95 Faces was the source ?

I thought it was stated in the NFO, but you are right it probably was the DC version.

The Quality Broth DVDs are transfers from the 1995 NTSC Faces LD set. The DVDs are letterboxed, 29.97 fps interlaced video with stereo audio in mpeg format (that is a violation of the DVD specicfication AFAIK, although the discs play fine on my standalone). This discs have simple motion menus and chapter selection. Video quality is OK, but the sound quality is lower as on most of the other transfers.

Hello Moth3r.

Gratulations for reaching v1.0 of your first disc.

I have stopped working on my own version at approx. v0.8 because I can't get a copy of the english language 1995 Laserdiscs from France (for a reasonable price). So far I created one anamorphic PAL disc of ANH with german and english sound and german only non-anamorphic PAL dvds of all 3 movies. If you you are interested in these versions for comparison PM me. I possess both the french and the german Laserdisc so I can also give you the missing frames resulting from side changes.
My versions were done on similar equipment so the quality should be similar. I used a Pioneer CLD 515 player (composite connection) and a Phillips SAA7134 based capture card.

I had to shrink them down (and they lost some quality because of it) because the site hosting them doesn't allow photos bigger than 250k. If anyone wants the originals, I'll have to find a site that will host them ... or I can just email them to you.

Hi,

I have a website hosting many different Star Wars covers including an upload section where you can upload your covers in high res.

Pan is very good cross platform (and most importantly free) newsreader. I only use it under Windows and Linux, but there is also a MacOS X version.

I want to be able to select which version to watch from the menu, let's say angle 1 for the Pre-ANH version and angle 2 for the "tweaked" version. Basically the only difference between the two would be the opening crawl and various effects shots scattered throughout. It should be relatively easy to set this up in Scenarist shouldn't it?

I don't know about Scenarist, but it is quite easy to accomplish with DVD Maestro (if you have multiangle ready sources).

There are some GUIs for dvdauthor that help with menu creation.

Help Wanted: an MP3 of the 1.0 mono mix from the pre-ANH projects?

Another source of the original stereo mix is the early '80's Japanese CLV full frame LD. It's not time compressed like the domestic version.

I have a british Laserdisc of ANH from 1982. Maybe that is the same stereo mix.

Very nice info Grisan, do you know where I could get a hold of that german DTV SE set?

AFAIK there is currently no download of this version available. You can get this version from me via trade or you could ask for it in alt.binaries.starwars. I posted this version there about a year ago, so some people should have it. Some people on this board also have this version. Torrenting is out of question for me because I only have slow upload speed that I have to share with a roommate.
I might post this version in a.b.starwars again in some weeks when I have access to a faster connection.

This would then be put onto a website for all to see.

I have two reasons for doing this.

The first is to make a quick and simple guide for all to work out what version they have and how it compares to others.
The terms TR47, Dr Gonzo, Farsight etc. do not mean anything to many people when they first visit places such as originaltrilogy.com or a.b.starwars etc.

The second reason is to try to find other versions that are currently available and bring them to the attention of others.

The information I am looking for is as follows.............

Possible identifying name of film or trilogy
Is it DVD5 or 9
Is there a menu?? (Screenshot of menu if possible.)
No of folders on disc.
No of files in folders.
No of chapters.
Details of soundtracks.
Details of any subtitles.
Details of extras.
Where is the film or trilogy available from.

I have already sourced much of what I need for this project but I still need details of the Five Star SE and the various German SE's discussed around these parts recently. Somewhere else I read about yet another Ep 4 release that also existed.

No doubt there are many more versions out there and ALL help is appreciated in detailing these versions.
