Where do I go from here as a SW fan?

Yeah, like those Blade Runner fans, which will get next year on DVD AND HD-DVD a special edition set, containing:

1) The original 1982 cinema cut, which hast been available on video for almost TWO decades
2) The 1992 Director´s cut
3) The new Final Cut, which will be Ridley Scott´s definitive version.

Or like those ET fans, who can have BOTH the original and 20th anniversary edition IN THE SAME QUALITY on DVD.

Yes, it´s so hard to please the fans. But then again, Blade Runner was such a financial succesful movie contrary to the Star Wars franchise....

Does anyone here watch Family Guy? They do a ton of SW spoofs!
Time
if your looking for a funny show with tons of SW references, you should watch "Spaced".

(they watch "Jedi" with the original ending, hate TPM, and bash Lucas)

selected bits:

Bilbo Bagshot: What about the Ewoks eh? They were rubbish. You don't complain about them.
Tim: Yeah but Jar Jar makes the Ewoks look like... fuckin'... Shaft.

Daisy: So how are you, you big bloody man?
Tim: I'm good, I'm good. Just, had a few things to sort out.
Daisy: With Sarah?
Tim: No, with George Lucas.
Daisy: Tim, it's been over a year.
Tim: It's been 18 months, Daisy. And it still hurts.
Daisy: Well, I didn't think The Phantom Menace was *that* bad.

[to a Star Wars: The Phantom Menace fan]
Tim Bisley: You are so blind! You so do not understand! You weren't there at the beginning. You don't know how good it was! How important! This is it for you! This jumped-up firework display of a toy advert! People like you make me sick! What's wrong with you? Now, I don't care if you've saved up all your fifty 'p's, take your pocket money and get out!
[the little boy runs off, crying]
Tim Bisley: What a prick.

Tim: Brian, did you notice that everything that transpired in those three films - and I *mean* everything - can be attributed to the actions of one very *minor* character?
Brian: Who?
Tim: The gunner on the Star Destroyer at the beginning of the first film.
Brian: How come?
Tim: [know-it-all] Well. Hmmhmmhmm. Because, if the gunner *had* shot the pod that C-3P0 and R2 were in, they wouldn't have got to Tatooine, they wouldn't have met Luke, Luke wouldn't have met Ben, they wouldn't have met Han and Chewie, they wouldn't have rescued Princess Leia. *None* of it would have happened.

2006 OT DVD: Poll: So What are You Going to Do?
Time
Poll: So What are You Going to Do?

well i really don't know; at first i was thrilled to hear that the real SW movies were coming to dvd, but from the announcement of this release till recently it was bad news over bad news... i've seen the dvd clips and i think it's not that bad, yes it is an half-assed job, an insult to these movies but i've seen worse (at least i think i've seen...). So now i'm in a "well i'll wait to see the real stuff in demo in a shop" to decide. it's a yes/no/yes/no/yes/no situation for me (the bits i've seen have had a kind of pavlovian reflex on me....damn you george!)

Spinal Tap!

I tried to read the french article, but it may as well be in chinese! Can anyone translate?

here's what the article says about the quality of the movies:
_the film is full of artifacts, like very visible grain on the picture even on the LFL logo.
_there is a lot of video noise on dark scenes
_a few blue and red lines in the dark parts
_compression is anything but acceptable
_colors are slightly better than the VHS and LDs

hey! maybe it's one of those times when it doesn't suck to live in France! {i'm french ; )} i hope this is the good news we've been waiting for, but i'm still waiting something more "official" and maybe (why not?) some visuals.

and Jenny, don't try being logical with GL; he is everything but logical.

John Williams' Music
Time
On the other hand, I think Williams decided to re-use some Star Wars themes in Jedi out of pure nostalgia (like the "tie fighter" part during the 2nd death star battle). I loved the way they tacked on the "rebel ceremony" bit at the end of the Jedi finale- it was very bittersweet, and a perfect ending to the trilogy.

i think that it is more Lucas' idea to re-use the tie fighters music in ROTJ (specially in the "sail barge assault", because you can hear an alternative cue on the 97 SE discs)

On the subject of the Prequel music, i like it, it's probably the only thing that i've really enjoyed in the movies but i think there is an "overuse" of choirs in the scores, i feel that sometimes the music is trying to compensate the lack of drama and "epic feeling" in the movies.

i know the french titles sounds stupid , but it was comon at the time to have something in french with the english title (i know it's lame, but what can i do?)

but sometimes it was necessary for some titles; like "Con Air"; "con" in french is the word for asshole ^^'

OK, the DVDs are coming...so how bad are they going to look?
Time
i've been watching some 4/3 dvds latelly to see what we can expect and some were pretty good, others were really bad:

Titanic: the first dvd (from 1999) was a 4/3 master, but i was surprised to see the quality of the picture despite being non-anamorphic and the fact that the movie (3hrs!) was on a single disc; if the OOT dvds can match that quality i will consider myself happy.

The Abyss: (probably the best Cameron movie ever!) it is also a 4/3 mastered dvd, but here you can tell that it is a LD master transfer; the picture is really blurry (specially when there is high contrasts in the image, like the openning sequence in the USS Montana), it's a shame that this movie never had a 16/9 release on dvd!

Silent Running: the quality is good enough to be "watchable" even if it is a typical 70's kind of image (grainy)

2010: the picture quality is ok, the lack of sharpness doesn't affect very much the space and interior scenes.

Wargames: this dvd has all the defaults! no sharpness, blurry and grainy picture.

They are being released on 11/9/2006 but only for a few months. Each film comes with 2 dvds, one of the original theatrical version and one with the enhanced version.
HMV has been the cheapest place I have found so far.
for the UK anyway...

I am dubious as to the reality of this being a strictly limited thing but whos gonna take the chance??
