Ponyo (2008)

I have had the theme stuck in my head all week, so I decided to give it another watch. Wonderful.

4 out 5 Balls.

A View to a Kill (1985)

A lot of people tend to badmouth this film, but I quite like it. Roger Moore was definitely too old to have been playing Bond at this point, although his age does set up a nice little side plot of him acting like a father figure to Tanya Roberts' character (until the shower scene at the end of the film ruins that plot thread)

I rather like Duran Duran's theme quite a lot too, I'd definitely have it up in my favourites with On Her Majesty's Secret Service and 'You Know my Name' from Casino Royale.

3 out of 5 balls

Licence to Kill (1989)

Again, people tend to bad mouth this film due for it's 'Miami Vice' influences and for taking a Darker approach, but I really like it. Timothy Dalton's bond almost seems like a precursor to Daniel Craig's Bond in a way, as well as staying more in line to the way Bond is depicted in the Books. I wish Dalton had stayed on to play Bond a couple more times, because I really like his Portrayal. I'm not fond of the score in Licence to Kill, Michael Kamen's score just doesn't seem 'right'.

4 out of 5 Balls.

One of the things that saddens me is that a theme that was used prominently throughout most of the original films, hasn't been used since Moonraker.

The theme is called '007'. It would be nice to hear it make a return in a new bond film.

Why hasn't anyone made a good Dan Dare film (or even a crap one)?

I have absolutely no idea. I would love to see a Dan Dare film. Not sure who would play Dare (Maybe James Purefoy), Digby, Sondar (Maybe Jason Issacs or Dominic West) or Peaboy though. David Warner would make a good Sir Hubert and Andy Serkis could make a good Mekon. Hopefully if Dredd is commercially successful it'll pave the way for other 2000 AD comics.

There was a CGI animated Dan Dare series several years ago, but I don't think it ever aired in the U.S. I think the company that did the FX for Babylon 5 made the show.

It used to air on a terrestrial channel called Channel 5. It was quite good, as well as a rather faithful adaptation of the original stories and concept. They also kept the same design elements from the original comics from the 50s. Although they did change Sondar into a cyborg, and Digby into a cockney.

P.S. On another note, why has no-one done a Dan Dare/Judge Dredd crossover comic?? It would be interesting to see how those two characters would interact.

Dredd - (2012)

As a fairly young and kinda casual fan of the 2000 AD comics (my dad owns a rather large collection of 2000 AD comics from the 70s & 80s, as well as a bunch of Beano comics and the usual Marvel and DC stuff) I thought it was Pretty awesome. I remember being more of a fan of Dan Dare as a child and not particularly liking Judge Dredd, but I've now changed my mind. I liked that it was a much more gritter and more adult take on the character that the Stallone film. It also felt sort of like an 80s Paul Verhoeven film, like RoboCop. Very Well done.

8/10

DKR did indeed change everything, and is without a doubt one of the best pieces of literature I have ever read. Take all of the hype you've heard about Watchmen and go read this instead. It is still an unbelievable read canonical or not. A film version with Kevin Conroy has long been a dream. (Though the new DCAU movie version-gulp-cast someone else)

Don't worry, Peter Weller is playing Batman. PETER ROBOCOP WELLER. squeee!!!

PS: Anybody here like Miller's All Star Batman & Robin? That was one of the most diabolically hysterical things I've eve read. People just took it seriously when some of the comedic gold was pouring out from the panels.

I was crying with laughter throughout this. It's hysterical how ridiculous they act.

Have you read Batman: Fortunate Son? In it Batman battles Rock 'n' Roll. It is quite possibly one of the dumbest comics I have ever read.

Pigs!... From a gun!!!
