P.S. Greencapt, I'm far more partial to "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" by The Spin Doctors.

Isn't it an extra on the semi-rare two-disc Superman Soundtrack? I'll check and see if it has it when I get home.

Your wish... blah, blah, blah...

The image size was an afterthought. Most of the posts are a very few words of either some total non sequitur or something so vaguely related to the thread that it smacks of boosting posts. Luckily it seems kind of one-sided and there doesn't appear to be an out-and-out post count war going on.

I agree with Gaffer on that and that leads to something that annoys the piss out of me with 'Superman Returns', at least inasmuch as we've seen so far- Clark, the 'real' person, was brought up well by good parents who helped him to believe in himself and believe in what he was put on this world to do. So why oh why restart a franchise of films with a whiny bitching 'Oh whoa is me why am I here nobody needs me my girlfriend has a baby' soap opera bullshit? Do people occasionally feel that way in real life? Yes of course. Is that what Superman is all about? Hell no... not by any stretch of the imagination. So I suppose one of my greatest fears of this film is that a new generation of filmgoers will have Superman defined to them in this way. Just like a generation of filmgoers, god forbid, define Star Wars based on the prequel films.

I have previously enjoyed Bryan Singer's work but this just smacks of someone who JUST DOESN'T GET IT. I honestly feel that Singer had a crush on Christopher Reeve when he was a kid and saw the original Superman films and probably didn't think of Superman again until he heard the atrocious (IMHO) song by Five For Fighting:
I cant stand to fly
Im not that naive
Im just out to find
The better part of me

Im more than a bird...Im more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
Its not easy to be me

Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home Ill never see

It may sound absurd...but dont be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed...but wont you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
Its not easy to be me

Up, up and away...away from me
Its all right...you can all sleep sound tonight
Im not crazy...or anything...

I cant stand to fly
Im not that naive
Men werent meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

Im only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
Inside of me
Inside me
Yeah, inside me
Inside of me

Im only a man
In a funny red sheet
Im only a man
Looking for a dream

Im only a man
In a funny red sheet
And its not easy, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm...

Its not easy to be me

That song makes me freakin' cringe everytime I hear it because again- THAT IS NOT SUPERMAN. A character will THAT much self-doubt and THAT much power is a freaking time-bomb ready to go off. One of the great things about Superman as a character is exactly the fact that he was raised well enough to put the personal petty shit aside so he can help people.

I'm not saying that, oh, maybe the 3rd film in a new franchise might not want to *touch* on some of that stuff but you FIRST need to establish WHO and WHAT a character is. Warner Brothers MUST know that most kids seeing this film will probably not have seen the earlier films so their only view of Superman will be a confused, pathetic wimp who ran away from trouble. Hell I even like 'Superman II' and I had a problem with him giving up his powers so he could score with Lois. And for those who say 'he's so old-fashioned and such a boy-scout' I counter with- yeah? So what? What the hell is wrong with having morals and values and being willing to use them to help people. In fact I'd challenge those who think heroes should have more 'inner turmoil' and be more like 'outsiders' or 'conflicted' to re-think Superman as a character- because these days if you DO have morals and if you ARE more of a boy-scout you ARE an outsider. Being a decent citizen and helping people with little thought for yourself IS different from the norm.

And that's what I had hoped audiences could get from this film. And maybe they will, but as I've seen nearly every 'spoiler' on the flick as well as having thumbed through the novelization I don't think this will be the case. You'll get, to paraphrase Bryan Singer, 'chick-flick' mentality with some well-done special effects. Well my friends good special effects do not a movie make (ie the Star Wars prequels, Matrix II & III). Do I think this film will be *bad*? No of course not, at least in a production value kind of way. Is it what Superman is all about? Not in my book... but then again, WTF do I know?

Now THAT'S a creepy thought....

Jor-El (voiceover): I worry that my son might not understand what I've tried to be. And if I were to be killed, Lara, I would want someone to go to my home and tell my son everything. Everything I did, everything you saw, because there's nothing that I detest more than the stench of lies. And if you understand me Lara, you will do this for me.

I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight... razor... and surviving. Oh and Kryptonite... that stuff sting like a mutha.

With any gods of your choice as my witness I would NEVER dis Tron! C'mon MBJ, you've read enough of my posts to realize that. (and FYI the new comic series, based on 2.0 but running with the ideas of the movie, is pretty cool. For that matter the first issue of a new Buckaroo Bonzai comic, written by creator Earl Mac Rauch, is out as well... cool stuff)

Lucasfilm to sell Physical Effects Unit

Actually it makes me just wonder how much money ILM and LFL has *lost* because of the other effects houses (ie WETA) that still CARE about doing things the best way possible even if it means building a model, full-size prop or CGI. I see fewer and fewer big films come out that are ILM showpieces. I'm not saying they don't have money and aren't working but they certainly aren't the be-all-end-all of effects these days.

Lucasfilm to sell Physical Effects Unit

Another sad day for film history, but let's hope the new custodians have their heads in the right place!

Lucasfilm to sell Physical Effects unit

With the model spacecrafts, miniature sets and hand-painted mattes seen throughout the original Star Wars trilogy replaced by computer-generated imagery for the new films, it was just a matter of time before Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) did away with its practical unit all together. Daily Variety today reports that the company is in talks to sell off its physical effects operation, which was left behind when Lucasfilm moved to its new headquarters at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco's Presidio.

The division of ILM that deals with models, miniatures and stage work has received a bid by veteran ILM model maker Mark Anderson, who will reportedly rename it Kerner Optical, a reference to ILM's original headquarters on Kerner Avenue in San Rafael, Calif. The studio would then become a preferred subcontractor for ILM, creating practical elements to augment ILM’s strictly digital pipeline.

The sale, which is expected to close within 60 days, will end an important part of ILM’s legacy as a groundbreaking visual effects studio. In the mid ’70s, the company devised a motion-control camera system that allowed miniature models to be composited with background footage for Star Wars, resulting in the spectacular space dogfights that changed the face of the science-fiction film and earned the company multiple Oscars for visual effects.

Once regarded as the top VFX studio in the world, ILM has been overshadowed in recent years by Peter Jackson’s New Zealand-based Weta, whose combination of digital effects and model work has garnered Academy Awards for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

On another note...

Be sure to pick up Superman: Secret Identity if you can. It's basically a retelling of the story of Superboy-Prime in which he DOESN'T become a whiny self-righteous monster.

No catch- they have really good prices in general and always run monthly specials- I bought the 'Astonishing X-Men' hardcover collection (issues 1-12) from them a couple of months back for $14.99! If there is any 'catch' its that you are ordering from Previews (the Diamond Comics distribution catalog) and are pre-ordering two months in advance the same way comic stores do. But just like your local comic shop you can establish a monthly 'pull list' to make your ordering easier but are under no obligation to order any product from month to month.

I know! You can preorder the Inifnite Crisis hardcover here: Discount Comic Book Service for a great $12.49! I order from this company and they have really good service and discounts!

EDIT: And NO, I don't work for them or get any kickbacks.

I've read a million and one Batman TPBs, but I only just picked up Batman #650 last week. I read it and thought it was pretty decent, but it raises a few questions for me, that I'm hoping one of you guys can answer. I know he's been running around as the Red Hood for the last year, killing crims and stuff like that, but riddle me this:

1) How did Jason Todd come back to life?
2) Why is he such a freakin' psycho?

I read A Death in the Family about two weeks ago, so I know all about Jason Todd's death. But it pisses me off how Jason won't take responsibility for his own death now. Batman laid down the law from the start, told Jason he had to take a break from being Robin. HE ran off across the Middle-East looking for three people who *might* be his mother. HE didn't wait for Batman to come back before they took down the Joker together. It's HIS fault. The only mistakes Batman made was not kicking his ass for disobeying him and not taking Jason with him when he was stopping those medical supplies from shipping...

In fact, Batman's only mistake was trusting Jason Todd too much. If proof's in the pudding, then Jason couldn't even be trusted with his own life...

Very true and kinda forgotten by comic readers aver the past several years. Jason Todd's return has just been recently explained in Batman Annual #25 which came out a couple of months back: http://comics.ign.com/articles/677/677822p1.html.

The heart of the story is in the right place but I think it relied too heavily on 'Infinite Crisis' to give it an 'out'...

**spoilers**

If you've read any Infinite Crisis then you know that Superboy Prime, led on by Alex Luthor, had been hammering away at the walls of their 'heaven' which caused ripples in the very fabric of reality until the barrier actually shattered. This gives DC an excuse to say that any retcon stuff they want to pull was caused by the ripples in the universe... and that is exactly how Jason became alive again. The rest of the annual lays out what happened to him and his mental state because of being dead. If you can just kind of ignore the whole 'ta-da! I'm alive' bit then the rest of the story is a good read.

Is there still a Red Sonja series in production?

There is a series running from Dynamite Entertainment. I have one issue which was very good but I haven't been picking it up regularly to know if its a good series overall. Also, on a weird note, there's a legal battle about the name and who can use the character because I guess one company owns the rights to the spelling 'Sonya' and another owns 'Sonja'. Stupid legal stuff.

NY Times Superman Return article

As the movie begins, Mr. Singer explained, Clark returns from a mysterious absence to discover that Lois has a fiancé and a child. This creates what may be the film's central quandary. "Even if you're the strongest man in the world," Mr. Singer said, "if the woman you love has found someone else that she's nearly married to that's not a bad guy, how do you figure out what your place is in that woman's life?"

He added, "I call it my first chick flick."

Great. A chick flick. Superman. I mean it was obvious, but he has now made it official.
