Wow. And here I thought fans had accepted Kyle as Green Lantern.

Yeah I did did as well. He seemed a decent replacement in keeping witht the other events of the DCU.

But there is one dead hero who has managed to stay dead - Barry Allen, AKA: Flash #2! Not that there was anything wrong with him...

Never say never, friend. I like that he's been kept dead because it honors his sacrifice in COIE which I found to be the most moving scene in that entire series second only to Supergirl's death. But who knows what they'll be doing (have done?) in the new 'Infinite Crisis' series.

I'd hate to turn this into a casting thread, but do you fellows have any ideas on who could play Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and/or, do I dare suggest it, the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott?

Or the lethal lovely Star Sapphire?

Hmmm... the first person who jumps to mind for Star Sapphire for me would be (a probably younger) Mimi Rogers. I'll have to think about the guys though. And please dare suggest because I at least feel Alan Scott is one of the coolest GLs!

I had heard that as well. I'm sure someone who has kept up can explain. I had remembered that he became one with The Spectre for awhile and was still there in a kinda touching scene in 'Identity Crisis'. Hal alludes to 'working on' coming back from the dead when Green Arrow makes a crack about them all knowing that death is never final for heroes. I'm sure that was a lead-in.

Inserting deleted scene of Yoda's exile into ANH??

From the 42nd draft of the ROTS script:

BAIL ORGANA: I'm placing these droids in your care. Treat them well. Clean them up. Have the Protocol Droid's mind wiped. Oh and while you're at it.. see all those people sitting watching this film? Have their minds wiped as well.

OBI-WAN WALKS BACK ON SCREEN, LOOKS DIRECTLY AT CAMERA, TOUCHES HIS INDEX FINGER TO HIS THUMB AND SLOWLY WAVES HIS HAND AT SCREEN.

OBI-WAN: You don't NEED to watch any further. These were NOT the prequels you were looking for. You never SAW any of them. Move along....

Well here I go again! Sheesh!

Damn me but I'm starting to be bitten by the comics bug again. Sigh. Just what I need- more stuff to spend money on!

I've recently read and enjoyed the 'Identity Crisis' series from DC (I'm playing catch-up) which I really enjoyed- I thought it was extremely well done with maybe the exception of the final issue which seemed a bit weak though that could be because of the cross-overs being needed to fill in gaps... not sure haven't read them.

Of course this has me interested in the currently running 'Infinite Crisis' series... there goes more $$$.

Other recent purchases:

The first two issues of SlaveLaborGraphics' 'Haunted Mansion' series. Fun stuff there but then again I'm a Haunted Mansion junkie.

The Neil Gaiman Marvel mini-series '1602'. I read the first issue last night and it seemed a good start and I'm looking forward to the rest.

Keep in mind I haven't bought/read much since 1998 so I'm a bit behind.

Absolutely! It sounds more like 'I just don't want to buy a copy or look for one' to me.

I think what makes this different from *preservation* at least in my opinion is that there's no *effort* in the 'preservation'. Its not like either title has not been available on DVD and someone is having to take another format (LD, VHS, etc) and convert to DVD. All this 'preservation' seems to amount to is "I've got the DVD and I'll copy it and give it away" (hopefully not sell). That's anyone's personal choice but there are so many other venues on the net for such pursuits that I can't see that its needed here.

Best Animated Feature Oscar Noms: Who should win?

Disney doesn't even make proper 2d animated movies anymore, so I'm not surprised they haven't been nominated. Straight to DVD sequels that cheapen your company's reputation don't count (and certainly aren't oscar worthy). Disney is no longer an innovative entertainment studio - they are a soulless corporation. Uncle Walt is turning in his grave.

Let's hope John Lasseter continues to kick ass and take names. I really respect the guy and all he's created or helped to ensure was created. He's the new Walt IMHO or at least as close as we're going to get these days and if it wasn't for his work Disney would have gone into another hibernation period as it did throughout the 70s/early 80s.

Sadly if there were no animated film category I doubt *any* of these films would have been nominated for much, with the slight possibilty of 'Howl's' for foreign language film.

Disney's animated entry this year, Chicken Little, was very very 'meh'. I *did* see it in the theater but only because I happened to be near a digital projection theater showing it in 3D. I'm a 3D geek and is WAS some amazingly clear 3D. But I essentially forgot the film when I walked out of the theater. Seriously- I think I forgot about it *entirely*. And that's scary!

G4 - A Network in Decline?
Time
My interest for that network died the day G4 took over from TechTV. I used to watch that network a LOT but it instantly became MTV with 'dudes' pretending not to be geeks and looking pathetic in the attempt. I was glad to hear that 'Call for Help' was back after they kicked Leo to the curb but 99% of the shows are ridiculous and utter crap IMHO.

The one video game show worth a damn used to be X-Play but they apprently even 'dude-ified' that show. I also used to think Morgan Webb was at least witty until A) She started doing monthly cheesecake shot in Maxim or whatever and B) Someone pointed out to me that she looks like Skeletor. Scary stuff that.

Conan: Red Nails
Time
More info here:

http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/7686.html

Ron Perlman, star of the Hellboy franchise, Marg Helgenberger of CSI, and James Marsden (Cyclops in the X-Men films) will voice the major roles in the first feature-length animated Conan film, Conan: Red Nails. The legendary W. Michael Kaluta is the new movie's key concept designer, with Mark Schultz (Cadillacs & Dinosaurs) adding additional designs for the 2D/3D film, which Victor Dal Chele (Spider-Man, The New Adventures of Johnny Quest) will direct from a screenplay by Steve Gold and Timothy Dolan. New Line Home Entertainment has acquired all North American distribution rights and plans to release Conan: Red Nails on DVD sometime in 2006.

The Conan: Red Nails animated feature is about to move from the "design and production" phase to principal animation. The film will precede a major new live-action Conan feature from Warner Bros. (see "Conan Movie Back on Track"). The return of Robert E. Howard's sword-wielding Cimmerian to the big screen can only be good news for retailers given the number of Conan licensees, which includes, to name a few of the most prominent, Dark Horse Comics, McFarlane Toys, Ballantine/Del Rey, Comic Images (CCG), and Mongoose Publishing (RPG).

I at least am not asking for a JUSTIFICATION at all. What I'm curious about is the reasoning and thought process of a filmmaker. Its a field I have great interest in and as someone who has edited a work or two I'm fascinated by the decisions that are made from earliest script to the 'final' edit. I've heard many wonderful commentaries from directors who will be happy to say 'by doing this I make the audience feel this way' or some such. That's how we learn, or at least that's how I learn. And that was the point of this thread or at least I had hoped.

And trust me- I've bought some stinker films to hear HOW they were made.

Also I think you'll find most here are OVERLY aware of how many this have been changed over the years- probably more than many film scholars at least when it comes to the films of George Lucas.

Best Animated Feature Oscar Noms: Who should win?

Gaffer- I'm with you 100% about there being no need for a special category for animation- it makes it like 'here's your little play area you all go have fun now and leave the *real* movies alone'. As you said- good is good no matter what.

YIYF- I too voted for W&G. Its a wonderful film (and out on DVD today!!!!) and hits all the right marks. "I know what caused this- arson!" *gasp* "Arson?!?!?" "Yes- someone here's been arsin' around!"

I'm a big 'Nightmare Before Christmas' fan and 'Corpse Bride' really didn't move me for some reason. Technically a great acheivement but the plot and pacing seemed off to me.

Regretfully I haven't seen 'Howl's' yet but Miyazaki never fails to impress. But too many great films in a row form a director/studio make it hard to pick one outstanding one.

My letter to Entertainment Weekly, what do you guys think?
Time
Well written CO and you beat me to the punch!

Are you planning on including specific examples whether in the form of screen-shots or a detailed list of known changes? I feel this would help. In fact any information that a reporter can use that saves him/her a little work can help loads towards an article.

The idea of a cover story really has me pumped- can you all imagine an EW cover that resembles the Wookie-Groomer splitscreen editions- like an all black cover with a screen cap of something like the S Shaw Force ghost on top and Hayden's on the bottom? Or perhaps a whole MONTAGE of split screen comparisons!!! Hell if I wasn't at work and had access to Photoshope I'd start laying out a mock cover like that!!!

I'd personally probably mention both the Donner Supes article and the fact about Spielberg's last mintue decision to release the original E.T. for the wider release just to remind EW that change is possible.

Does GL ever explain why...
Time
Back on topic, it seems like what I feared was true- that very little is anything was mentioned in the commentaries regarding he 'tweaks' and changes. I honestly would really like to hear from George Lucas the *filmmaker* WHY he (again honestly) felt certain scenes were needed. And not just things like the Hayden Force ghost- I mean things like the extra shot of Vader going to his shuttle, etc. Basically putting his mouth where our money is as it were.

For that matter I doubt *most* SE DVD releases can truly justify newly included scenes for any other reason than to get people to buy more DVDs. I acknowledge this is the fundamental nature of the film business but I'd personally rather buy a multi-DVD set that has extensive behind the scenes documentaries than an 'unrated' or 'director's cut' which has merely 20 seconds of footage inserted or a version put together by the studio despite the director having been happy with the theatrical version for several years.
