Hmmm... I've admired his work for years now but never really read or heard much about him personally. I kinda imagined him as a bit of a recluse for some reason.

Now, though it goes without saying generally, Todd McFarlane IS a dick... it takes about 10 seconds of talking with him in person to figure that out!

Alright- I sat and watched this tonight. I give it a 2 1/2 out of 5 skulls (pirates use skulls instead of stars! ).

First off I haven't read any of 'The Ultimates' yet but I get that its an alternate take on the Marvel continuity so I accept the updates/changes they've made. The characterizations, then, I found interesting and reasonably well laid out. I thought a lot of the dialogue was good but overall the think the story suffered.

*** possible spoilers ***

My main gripe with the story was the alien bad guys. Uh... ok maybe I can accept super soldiers and growth formulas and all that hero jazz but... Nazis working with aliens and allied forces essentially just acting like its no big deal? Then in the present- just what the hell was the whole point of the aliens? I mean who were they? What were they after? How were they going to do whatever they were after? Etc, etc, etc. There was no purpose to the story of the whole film. The aliens were introduced and then after being pummeled for a bit disappeared completely to make way for the Hulk story with only a 'well we beat them and saved the day' line dropped in. Much too disjointed.

My other gripe which I had alluded to in another thread was the animation. Please PLEase PLEASE Marvel... get some REAL animators and a NEW character designer. I swear to whichever deity fits the bill that Marvel has let the same one guy, locked in a closet somewhere, design EVERY bloody character's animated look since G.I. Joe hit the air in the 80s!!!! They all look the same! All the background characters are the same! Yo Joe! And the animation itself is mostly horrid IMHO- as usual in Marvel animation there are horrible gaffs in drawn perspective. The backgrounds never flow with the character movement nor does the art ever match. That's not to say that the character animation is always bad- some of the Hulk vs heros fights were really sharp and looked like they were laid out by completely different artists. And whereas I thought the voices were generally well cast I would be hard pressed to believe that the voices were recorded *prior* to animation- the lips just don't match. I've seen dubbed anime that matched up better than some of the scenes in this movie.

One of the things that I think makes much of the DC animated series stand out is very consistant art design. Even if its totally different from the comics, their creators pick a style and stick with it... which makes the viewer focus more on the *story* than the animation.

To end on a positive note (not something I'm known for in reviews! ) I thought they could have done the whole film JUST on Captain America. They really did his character well and was worlds more interesting than most of the others. Also as DAYV pointed out the extras with the fan auditions are mostly hilarious and well worth a watch!

My vote is rent it but do check it out. Hopefully they'll keep improving from here.

Bond, James Bond
Time
I too am a big Bond fan in all his versions. For whatever reason I'm probably more forgiving of the Bond film franchise than I am of any other. But oh well.

I'll add to the mix- Has anyone seen the ORIGINAL filmed version of 'Casino Royale'? I actually have the VHS release of it (and someday should transfer to DVD). Here's a pretty good description as written by a reviewer on Amazon.Com:

In 1954, CBS broadcast a one-hour presentation of "Casino Royale" for its series "Climax Mystery Theatre." This original production, not the 1967 spoof, stars American actor Barry Nelson as Bond (often referred to as "Card-sense Jimmy Bond")and Peter Lorre as villain Le Chiffre. In this production, the American Bond is assisted by British agent Clarence Leiter! This is a pretty much by-the-numbers adaptation of roughly the first half of Ian Fleming's novel, and is merely adequate as far as thrills and action are concerned. Peter Lorre is, of course, the real gem here. For all its shortcomings, however, the original "Casino Royale" is worth watching for its sheer novelty, and the hints of grander things to come.

Well, actually, I alluded to it, by saying there'd have to be a plausible reasoning for his return. That's what I meant. I swear.

LOL. I know you did GT... I was just wondering who'd be the first to say either "Owen would be one charred ex-Jedi to come back!" or "he certainly must have faked his death!"

Anyhow, don't consider this an official entry, since I already have the CE trilogy as well as the two DL CEs, and it should go to someone who needs them. But I just had to do this since I had the idea fresh in my head...

On Tuesday, I had a heart that said "U R Mine", so I gave it to a friend and when he read it and looked up at me I just clenched my fist as Vader-esque as possible.

Actually that goes for me too... I have the CE and would have just passed it on to another needy soul- it was just too fun to play!

Love the Valentine too, knolly!

Wow, that actually sounds pretty kickass. There'd have to be a plausible reasoning for his return, and very, very subtle foreshadowing throughout all the movies, but that would be so friggin' awesome! It just goes to show you that nothing is as it seems.

The REALLY funny thing is no one pointed out the glaring continuity error my idea would create...

Just goes to show GL has us brainwashed to changes and errors.

You know, it sounds crazy, but I believe that it could have been a feasible option for them. I just wish that ROTJ didn't close everything up so prematurely...I'm almost certain that this revelation of "the other" was meant to come much later in the series, and of course, not be Leia...

Then again it would have been amusing to have Luke fly off, Yoda say the 'there is another line' and have Ben's ghost say 'What, really?' and Yoda reply, ala Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction, 'No man- that's just some messed up stuff I like to say when a brother flies off to his death. He's toast.'

New Lara Croft
Time
Rhona Mitra Bio:
Comic Book Hottie Roles:
Lara Croft Tomb Raider
Full Name: Rhona Mitra
Date Of Birth: September 8th, 1976
Place Of Birth: Paddington, UK
Height: 5'8"
Vitals: 34-24-35
Profession: Actress and model

What's Her Story: British actress Rhona Mitra owes her rise to success to a video game and an American teen drama. Born in London, England Rhona Mitra was admittedly a troubled adolescent who was expelled from two boarding schools and wasted several years involved in London's decadent club culture. When she decided it was time to get serious she enrolled in drama school and after one year in the three-year program, was convinced she knew enough to start looking for work. After landing small roles in several British television shows and no-name movies, her big break happened in 1998 when she became the first model to impersonate Lara Croft, the heroine of the popular video game Tomb Raider, at trade shows and gaming conventions. She spent most of the year as Lara Croft, and even made an album in which she sang several songs as the character. In 1999, her career got a major boost in the United States when she was cast in a recurring role on the successful television series Party of Five. Rhona Mitra spent the better part of a year on the show, and in 2000, found herself a full-fledged doctor on the medical drama Gideon's Grossing, which immediately left the air in 2001. Mitra's television work helped raise her profile in the film industry, and she earned showy supporting roles in Hollow Man, Get Carter, and Sweet Home Alabama. Most recently (2004), she won a role on long running law show The Practice, which has morphed into a new snow called Boston Legal.

In honor of his recent passing, I offer you this 'what if':

[weirdrandomthought]

What if, circa ESB, the 'other' that Yoda alluded to was.... Uncle Owen! What if we found out Owen had been a Jedi, also in hiding (maybe or maybe not Ben's brother or EVEN Anakin's REAL brother) but who had had a falling out with Ben for some reason. So in the theoretical ROTJ Owen shows up at the last minute to help Luke (and the Skywalker family) overcome darkness!

EDIT: I started to continue this train of thought but it will have to wait for another thread. I am just waiting to see if the forums here heal themselves naturally or if a shot of anti-idiotics are needed.
