Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Settle down, guy. Nobody's saying you can't enjoy this box set. Why so defensive? Does my comment lessen your enjoyment of the films on blu ray? I'm not preventing you from spending your money on something you want, so you should relax a bit.

However, it's worth noting that despite people having qualms with the changes or video quality, they'll still buy the BD saga. We've seen those comments in reviews and on the forums. That's a personal decision and I respect it, but anybody who does that shouldn't complain about Lucas not listening to the fans. I'm not saying you've done that but it's a more general observation.

The irony is that people will say the "SW on BLU!" comment is tiresome, and then their reasoning will be that despite changes or quality issues, they want to enjoy the movies in the best quality possible. It's kind of like when Trey Parker and Matt Stone made fun of Sean Penn for saying how he's been to Iraq, then Penn wrote a response to them saying that very thing, thus proving their point.

Again, by all means enjoy the discs, but don't expect everyone to fall in line. It goes both ways. People not buying the set are allowed to speak their mind about why not.

Well unfortunately do to family complications. I will not get to go to Wal-Mart at midnight tonight. To bad I was looking forward to NOT buying the blu rays.

But if any of you fined your self at Wal-Mart at midnight tonight.

Stand buy the big cardboard display and tell any one that is going to buy it.

“You do not want to buy these blu rays.”

“ They are not the films your looking for.”.

Their responses will be, "But it's Star Wars on blu! I gotta have it, LOL."

That response is getting as tiresome as those whom you are joking with.

Not as tiring as your irrational obsession with quoting my posts.

You need a different hobby.

Sure they are!

Georgec, you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

Haha, I agree with you in that they are nowhere near the level of the OT and everything about them is a pathetic attempt to plagiarize and recreate the OT as well as sell a few toys. But in official terms to SW fans, the prequels are "canon."

Meh.

I haven't played The Force Unleashed but know that the main character in the game challenges Vader for his seat with the Emperor or something like that. You have all these super powerful, important characters that seem to come along every week in the EU timeline but it's all inconsequential because what you have in the OT is all that matters (at least to me).

Isn't that a little circular? You dislike the stories that aren't the OT because they don't matter because it doesn't matter because it's not the OT.

Your sentence doesn't make sense and I never said that. The OT is self-contained. The EU is like the prequels in that it much of it seems to go back to trying to fit in with the OT in some way, to explain some little detail that isn't necessary for understanding the story/characters.

I don't care much for the EU because I think everything you need to know about the characters is in the OT. There's good stuff out there, no doubt (Thrawn trilogy, for example), but personally I'm not that interested anymore to fill in all the cracks. The younger me needed a SW fix but now I'm older and, quite frankly, see SW fans' obsession with everything EU as a waste of time. Moderation can be healthy but SW is just so bland and diluted that there is much more garbage than solid story-telling out there in the EU.

Just look at Vader - that character's strongest traits diminished in many eyes because of the prequels. Yes, the prequels aren't EU, but it shows that sometimes less is more in creating memorable characters and stories.

I'm not saying people can't enjoy the EU. It's just my own personal feeling. I don't need that SW fix anymore like when I was 12 years old (and that's not mean to be condescending or imply people who like the EU are immature or childish). I just mean my own tastes have changed.

When the 1995 THX VHS came out and SW saw a resurgence in pop culture, I was 11 years old. I enjoyed some of the Dark Horse comics, the customizable card game, a few novels, etc. It was a fun experience to expand upon my liking for the OT characters. The Zahn trilogy and other works satisfied this.

Now, the SW universe is just so damn diluted and pathetic. Clone wars? Don't care. Knights of the Old Republic? Don't care. There's just so much crap out there anybody who tries to keep up is wasting his time.I acknowledge there is probably good work in the current EU (can't imagine writing being worse than the prequels), but there has to be a hell of a lot of inconsistency. And doesn't it become bland after awhile? How many more unique characters are there to explore? Quality goes down with increasing quantity.

The average SW fan probably knows more about the EU than Lucas.

The greatest effect the bloated EU has is diminishing and cheapening the stories and characters in the movies. 15 years ago Darth Vader was a talented warrior who gave into temptation and slaughtered the Jedi. Now he's a pathetic loser who couldn't nut up to the fact that shit happens and you have to deal with it.

I haven't played The Force Unleashed but know that the main character in the game challenges Vader for his seat with the Emperor or something like that. You have all these super powerful, important characters that seem to come along every week in the EU timeline but it's all inconsequential because what you have in the OT is all that matters (at least to me).

Outside of the OT and select EU works, the SW brand honestly sucks.

I wonder where KenKraly is now. It is the same shoddy transfer and the collars aren't fixed and in 90% of cases neither are the lightsabres :-)

But if you read most major reviews the PQ is pristine with no color timing issues, wrong lightsabers, crushed blacks. It's SW on blu, baby! Anybody who says it's less is just a h8r.

I remember when Terminator came out, and blu-ray.com was so critical about it, particularly the picture quality.  I think they gave it 3 stars.  Why didn't they use the "it has problems but hey, it's Terminator on blu ray!" argument for that?

Because Terminator fans aren't so self-loathing like SW fans who need to rationalize the purchase of every subpar product Lucas puts out despite their dissatisfaction with obvious flaws and poor business tactics.

It's really quite sad to consider the hold he has on the SW fanbase. We're sheep.

If anyone cares, this Friday (09/16) the blu-ray set will be reviewed on G4's Attack Of The Show. The show's DVD reviewer, Chris Gore, said that his review "may surprise you..."

That could go either way. :-P

Eh, the surprise will probably be the Holiday Special Boba Fett cartoon or something and have nothing to do with the review itself. I could be wrong.

Success! Wandered into HPB tonight and there was a new, shrink-wrapped copy of the ANH LE dvd. What luck! My circle is now complete. I got my three unopened LE dvds for $10 each, so I'm satiated. I'll never open them unless the UOT gets a proper, official release.

It's interesting how SW brings the OCD out in me. I wish I had that OT 2008 box with the slim cases. In fact, I wish I had bought a few copies when they were cheap last year to sell on ebay.

How do others see the originaltrilogy.com community?

What I find amusing is that OT purists get a bad rap for being rapid, whiny, spiteful fanboys (of which there are some), but the people who constantly beg for scraps from Lucas' table are somehow "better fans." Better yet, they're better consumers because they buy, buy, buy anything with the SW brand on it. From all view points they are more important to SW's viability than OT purists/holdouts.

Everyone on all sides of the debate loves SW for various reasons and to various, valid extents, but let's cut the "true fan" bullshit. In fact, I'll go so far as to say people who are broader fans of film in general seem to prefer the UOT. No, I don't have statistics or proof - just an observation for various discussions with people and on the web throughout the years.

Didn't see this posted yet - EW review:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20528254,00.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+entertainmentweekly%2Fmovies%2Freviews+%28Entertainment+Weekly%2FEW.com%27s%3A+Movie+Reviews%29

Sure, I suspect some diehards will wince and grouse about Darth Vader's newly added ''Nooo!'' at the climax of Return of the Jedi in this set (Lucas just couldn't help himself, could he?), but there's no denying that every film looks better on Blu-ray than it ever has before. Whether it's the crisper white tundras on the ice planet Hoth or the inkier fog-shrouded swamps of Dagobah, Lucas has for the most part done right by his fans this time...as much as it pains this geek to admit it

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't most people confirmed the blue tint in ESB is still there? That is, white snow is actually bluish? I doubt this guy even looked at the discs for more than 5 minutes, but I thought we might as well get the "SW on blu OMG!" train moving.

Because f**k you, that's why.

That made me laugh pretty hard. That would sum up a lot...

And actually, George Lucas dying MIGHT actually be a good thing. I mean, I try not to wish death upon people, but it wouldn't hurt. I think he's the reason the OUT isn't being released; if the tyrant dies, then the other people might think, "Why the hell not? Sheesh..." and release them finally, without GL stopping them.

I would hope Lucas has his "Noo...NOOOOOO!!!" moment and casts off his greedy, egomaniacal demons before he leaves the world. Maybe in some years he'll have a change of heart and realize he was a bloody fool. I don't want anybody to die for my personal benefit, though.

But, in considering the SW property, let's all remember that Lucas owns SW, and when he passes on he'll make all the necessary legal arrangements to prevent the UOT from being released by ANYONE. If his daughter Katie really will inherit the LFL empire, then it will only be tougher for UOT enthusiasts. She is her father's daughter and fanboy hate will only increase her resolve to not release the UOT.

I'm sure everyone on here has read this but I'll post anyway:

Such a fascinating look at the behind the scenes dynamics. I 100% support the theory that Lucas changes the movies constantly to renew the copyright, make the movies "his" in every sense of the word, and screw people like Marcia out of royalties.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Blu-ray.com review is up:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-Blu-ray/14903/#Review

5/5

No, the "untouched" original trilogy is not included. Yes, there are some goofy new additions, like Darth Vader yelling "NOOOOO" as he throws Emperor Palpatine over the railing. I don't think anyone expected this release of The Complete Saga to be free of controversy. But come on. It's Star Wars. On Blu-ray. This is a once-in-a-technological-generation event, and if your hatred of George Lucas' revisionist tinkerings keeps you from enjoying some of your favorite films in high definition, you're missing out. Believe me, I share your pain. Whenever I hear that stupid funk song inside Jabba's palace, I cringe like a man being forced to bite down on tin foil or chew sand. It's almost physically painful. But I'm done being bitter. I'm playing the long game. One of these days, Lucas will wise up and realize that the original trilogy—in its original form—is a culturally and historically important piece of pop art that belongs to its fans. But until that day, I'm going to enjoy this Blu-ray box set. The films have never looked or sounded better— Episodes III-VI are particularly impressive—and they come with a fantastic collection of special features.

Another one bites the dust and rationalizes giving into the Luca$ machine.
