Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years

I thought it was hilarious when during the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray "war", people were saying, "Which format will porn choose?" Those people completely neglected two things:

1. Porn choosing VHS in the 80s mattered because you couldn't stream porn with two clicks of a button on your computer.

2. Because of said ease of availability of porn on the web, only morons buy porn in the present day.

I watched the Keanu Reeves-produced and narrated documentary Side By Side last night. It was fantastic. Plenty of interviews with directors, cinematographers, and other industry figures on the merits of digital vs film, and where the future lies. Compelling arguments by both sides.

You can imagine who one of the biggest proponents of digital was (rhyme with Ducas). And he had good points, about being able to review footage immediately instead of waiting for dailies to find out something ruined the shot, not having to handle all the film strips, etc. On the flip side others contended that the emphasis on the image on set meant less attention to performances.

There was one very telling comment from James Cameron, who said something along the lines of: "After the success of Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and How to Train Your Dragon, we showed there was a market for 3D." I found this to be interesting because he didn't really mention storytelling opportunities (or perhaps he did and it wasn't included). But it kind of went along with how many feel that things like 3D are just empty marketing gimmicks.

I think it's great that some directors can choose to use film and others can use digital. Soderbergh talked about how during filming Che, they didn't have to carry so much heavy film equipment through the hot, dense jungles. Just their hand helds and a few other things.

The documentary seemed to be making a small plea to not let film die completely. I'm not sure what's projected for the future, but I hope both forms of filmmaking can coexist.

Highly recommended. I think many people on here would enjoy it.

Since when did ROTJ become less highly regarded than even Episodes II or III?

The film is set in 4 ABY, one year after the Empire's occupation of Cloud City, when Luke Skywalker and friends travel to Tatooine to rescue their friend Han Solo from the vile Jabba the Hutt.

I win. That's for a guy that ate SW trivia up in the 90s but hasn't thought much of it since.

Well the news just seems to be getting better about the new Star Wars films, especially knowing that this person will have nothing to do with them or anything Star Wars related ....

What Do You Remember From Your First Viewing Of The OT?
Time

I don't remember my first viewings. I think I watched ROTJ the most when I was a kid, though (which is probably why it's my favorite). I don't remember watching SW or ESB quite as much before 1995.

I remember the glorious day of going to Best Buy with my mom and buying that 1995 THX trilogy box set the day it came out. As soon as I came home I popped that bad boy in, and I think that's when the love really took hold.

Two years later Greedo shot first...

That's kind of how I feel. Great scenes, good acting (other than the main female lead, she was awful and all her lines were monotone), and beautiful cinematography.

But the script just feels like it should have been sharpened more. I understand Cimino wrote it himself, and maybe he pulled a Lucas by not going through enough revisions.

I wouldn't say it's a beautiful mess. It's more a beautiful, underwritten script.

Heaven's Gate

Can't figure out what I thought of it. Certainly a good movie, but I'm not sure if it's great. I can see where criticisms came from when it was released, but I like how the film takes the conventions of Western films, as well as common notions about the American frontier, and flips them on their head. The film has some underlying themes that are just as relevant today.

What do others think of this film?
