Yea I tend to pick up on those discussions here and there, but overall the Trek fans do seem to enjoy his movies, albeit with reservations about the lack of, for want of a better word, intelligent commentary.

I don't know. I've found that the prequels actually cause me constipation rather than relieving it.
Plus, if you have an annoying visitor, they are more likely to like the prequels, so that plan may backfire.

As someone who didn't really watch much ST growing up (occasionally on tv), do the harder core ST fans dislike what Abrams is doing because he doesn't have as much of the more cerebral sci-fi discussion/commentary?
I think Abrams did a good job on the first one, and the alternate universe thing allows him to leave every preexisting thing in the myths intact. But his works seem less like ST movies and more like action movies set in the ST universe. And I don't mean that in a negative way.
Just some thoughts I had. Someone let me know if this seems reasonable or if I sound stupid.

Probably before the 2004 DVD set came out when it was reveal Lucas made more changes. I had always preferred the UOT, but that's the moment the cynicism set in. After ROTS came out the following spring, I drastically lowered my interest in the franchise, even though I never really spent much on anything SW-related.

Ford, Hammill and Daniels have made less-than respectiful remarks about the films in the past, doesn't mean they hate the movies or Lucas. Good lord, people read such a lot into so little, just to support their existing negative outlook.
I agree, but sometimes they do this not to support a purported negative outlook, rather they take offense to things never said and get angry because they don't like people expressing opinions different than theirs.
Hard to imagine the same guy would have trouble writing believable dialogue...

Seems weird for McGregor to be interested. He doesn't really hold the prequels in high regard. Of course if different people are writing and directing the experience would be different. But given how he's lightly teased Lucas and joked about the greenscreen/CGI and lack of direction with actors, it doesn't seem like he'd be invited back.

I agree with zombie. The guy pulled off some incredible feats of production management given how the scripts were formulated so late. He did his job very, very well. Maybe he'll find success in other film or tv jobs.
