But what you're all forgetting is that the will of Geroge Lucas eclipses every effort we throw at him. The OOT is doomed to die because of his own cyclic logic, and he has an iron grip over all hollywood companies- he even forced AFI to show the SE of SW! It doesnt matter if its HD or something ridiculousy good looking such as maybe, 256:81 presentation, or 2480p quality in the next 20 years. It doesnt matter if its 1998 or 2028 or even 2108! IT is Lucas' absolute iron will to keep the OOT in rotting VHS and film reels, and sealed forever in DVD quality that would be substandard even to Soviet Bloc standards! The will destroy a film out of existence is the single thing that helps Lucas sleep at night.

George Lucas to host showing of Star Wars "1977" for AFI's 40th anniversary.

But George Romero is not some tyrannical film mogul who will do anything in his path to absolutely destroy all existing copies, memories, and supporters for the OOT. It's not illegal to watch the original version of dawn of the dead, and in 15 years time Romero would never purue the death penalty for being in favor of the OOT. The OOT is now more or less equal to the SW Holiday special to George Lucas. So you might as well shave your head, put on a sackcloth, cover your body in ashes, and flog youself in bottomless grief for the horrible, slow death of the SW saga. THERE IS NO HOPE now that Lucas controls AFI. They were are only hope.

HD-DVD/BlueRay will correct all this nonsense

No it won't; it will be only a medium for Lucas to further seal the death of the OOT. And CO, didn't you say yourself a few months ago the hope for the OOT died with the GOUT, and we will be stuck with the GOUT as our only source of seeing the real SW in 2015, when HD has swamped the market?

The majority of people don't care/won't notice if the works of Shakespeare, Michelangelo, or Ingemar Bergman are preserved either. That should be irrelevant.

Still, that would be a very sad commentary on our present culture right now, if something of deep meaning is just thrown out the gutter and burned. While SW may be none of these these things, the idea that a film that has been seen by millions of people and is a part of the collective consciousness is destroyed without protest and replaced by an imposter film, see if that makes you not lose sleep at night. Lucas has already destroyed the OT in its original form and sucessfully replaced by the PT and the SE, and has made it a crime for anyone to show the original films without resorting to ancient technology or poorly made DVDs. Of course you are just going to troll about it anyways.

BTW, my hope for AFI has just died

Perhaps all the GOUT ultimately boils down to is LFL's desire to make a quick dollar. It's sad and petty, but not impossible.

The GOUT was a test for George Lucas to prove nobody wants the OOT and his SE has virtual mainstream approval. Sure, he cheated by making the OOT horribly outdated to justify his logic, but Lucas can afford a loss in money. Heck, he made $1 billion in domestic grosses for the PT alone. He considers it a minor sacrifice to lose a few million dollars to make an additional hundreds of millions of dollars.

BTW, based on the whole HD/Blu-ray predictions, we may get an even more extensively altered DVD of the OT by 2013, and then a really, really bad copy of the OOT by 2015. Imagine a 4:3 laserdisc on a possible 64:27 TV ten years from now!

I really hope that's true, lordjedi. I am not in any way, shape, or form a fan of the PT or the SE. It's just that to Lucas the 1977/1997 numbering is the exact same thing because the OT has been replaced by the SE. The reason I said that future generations will only know the SE because Lucas and his sucessors to Lucasfilm will maintain this propoganda, while the OT we all know and love will be cast forever into the realm of bootlegs.
