What do you LIKE about the Prequels?
Time

The Yoda from ESB wins hands down.

In the PT, some story elements could have worked if it was better written. The fall of Anakin and the Republic are not inherently bad, but how Lucas handled it could not have happened if the "characters" were more intelligent. Instead of thematically tying the trilogies with ripoff scenes from the OT, they could have paralleled Anakin's fall with the republic's fall.

I do like the phantom menace duel though.

I hate to bring it up again, but that restoration of Children of Paradise is a crime against humanity. The transfer is completely indefensible; it may be just a video, but the film is so important that there is no excuse. They really went gung ho on the DNR, and it is painful for me that there will never be a good Blu-ray of that movie for years to come. I know this is a lame first world problem, but sometimes first world problems matter more than you think.

You must take really shitty care of your things if your blu-rays are skipping. I understand you literally have to TRY and damage those bloody things. And if you're throwing your whole collection out, have fun with your old 4:3 P&S tapes derived from beat-up film prints and shitty early restoration techniques. I'm sure they'll love to spend quality time with you again.

I do take care of my blu-rays pretty well. They just rot on their own after two or three years. Or maybe it is the player.

I just fucking hate physical media now. Why, in the holy hell do blu ray discs have to skip too? I adopted the format to avoid to problems I had with DVDs. I feel like I have had several heart attacks just now. It is just the most miserable thing on earth right now. I'm throwing my whole goddamn movie collection and Blu-ray player down the drink now. I won't be able to sleep tonight.

i know this is cliche, but Mondays should be outlawed. The worst shit always seems to happen on those days.

Inconsistencies, retcons, and other problems in the OT

I don't think Lucas cared about the little details anyway. Even the best SW movies were cynical cash grabs from the beginning. The more Lucas was paying attention to the merchandising, the more problems the movie had.

Really? Really??

Since the first Star Wars was a huge risk for the studio, and ESB was a huge risk with Lucas's own money, can't we, even at our most fan-hatred filled, call them sincere cash grabs?

And is it possible that when not caring about the relative speed of hyperdrive, Lucas just figured the FANS didn't give a damn and only cared about the story, not "this won't effect the bottom line."

What about Jedi? It was the lynchpin of the whole franchise, and since it falls short of perfect, the OT was already ruined. Maybe when he made the first star wars he might have cared about the story. But remember, he just wanted to remake Flash Gordon in the first place, and ANH strongly resembled any of the later prequels until it was saved in editing.

Dark Knight Rises - Now that we know the cast
Time

It not the plot holes themselves, it's wether or not they break suspension of disbelief. In Star Wars and the dark knight, you don't really notice them at all because you are too invested in the story. But in a film like Prometheus and TDKR, they pull you out of the movie because they add up too fast and become the focus instead of the story.

Plus, Nolan's films have a reputation for being too talky and more based on ideas instaead of visuals. In a visual medium like film, that's not really encouraged.

To be honest, the only good thing about the whole Nolan trilogy was Heath ledger. Nolan said himself that he never went to film school, and in TDKR it shows. Even RLM stated once that he isn't a "real" filmmaker and can't hold a candle to directors like David Fincher or Paul Thomas Anderson. His batman films are on par with Burton's and Scumacher's, if not worse in light of the third film. No one can make a good third film, it is just an impossibility.

What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)
Time

I know we have several fan preservations here on the site, but is there any news on the theatrical cuts being rereleased on Blu Ray? Or what about the article Zombie published on the NFR restoring SW that got pulled quickly? Will Disney bring out the hammer on the preservations themselves now that they own SW? Or has that deal put us in a sort of safety zone and we have done our job?

Dr. Dork is here. ;)

You're being overly dramatic but I'm guessing you believe all that is true. I work at a halfway house and one of the things we do is help clients develop a support group (family, friends, coworkers, etc).

Wanna know what the easy/fastest way is to make a friend? It's not a bar or a church. It's volunteering. Volunteer somewhere where there will be other volunteers. You won't be coworkers, just two people with kind hearts and at least one thing in common (the place you volunteer).

Volunteering also helps you feel better about yourself because you are helping others even when you yourself feel you are the one needing help. We all need help sometimes.

Volunteering is also HUGE on a resume even if it's the only thing on that resume. If you don't have a job or can't find one then volunteer somewhere. You'll be busy, have a reference for a future job, feel better about yourself and life, and most of all...meet new people.

No joke. If you're hurting, find someone who is hurting more and help them.

Really, that is all you can say, is volunteer for something? What the hell should I volunteer for? I have no clue what to do.

Volunteer for Loaves & Fishes or at a soup kitchen. It's easy, it's only a couple hours once a week and you can volunteer weekly or monthly just let them know in advance when you are available.

Everyone should do something like this at least once. It will be a very humbling experience and it'll give you some perspective as to just how horrible your life isn't.

Any other options? (btw I have done volunteer work before as a kid)

other options besides volunteering?

Do you have a job? If not, get one (even if it's the food, service, or retail industry). A lot of places hire on more people for the holidays. Go to your local job center. There tons of resources there including volunteer opportunities.

Have a job, but need a friend? You could join a club or some organization. I have friends that I made solely through hanging out at bars but we only seem to hang out when drinking is involved. You could go to church (I don't recommend it). Even Atheists have meetings.

No job, no friends? Go to college. Even if you have no money you would be surprised home much state and federal loans cover. Also student loans have low interest rates and you can defer payments until you get a job. Even if it's community college or vocational school. You'll steer your life in the right direction, meet lots of new people, schools have counselors, and you'll a future to look forward to.

I have a job, and I went to college (BS degree). But it was in a major that although it wasn't a joke degree (chemistry), it was something I didn't really want to do for the rest of my life, and it was too late to switch majors. So I blew that oppurtunity. Plus I get absolutely no emotional support from my family, yet I am stuck under my parents roof and have done little but go to work for low pay for the past four years.

I don't care. I have suffered more than any other human being in history. Pathe international has personally attacked me by this transfer. This is the end all be all of everything.

Wait. You're saying this and you have never seen this movie? The actual fuck is wrong with you?

I have no friends, no money, no future, and no help.

Plus, I don't have to see the movie to know if the picture will be bad. There is such a thing as "word of mouth" and online reviews.

Unfortunately the digital transfer itself has been processed within an inch of its life. It looks awful, and is easily one of the worst looking transfers Criterion has yet delivered on Blu-ray. Long shots are “acceptable” at best, but close-ups look horrendous. Films grain has been scrubbed out, losing just about all details in the process. Close-ups on Lacenaire are particularly laughable, the character now looking like a porcelain doll with tight curls, and its almost as though there’s a glare coming off his forehead at all times. Clothing lacks details and every costume comes off as though they're made from vinyl. There are no textures, fine patterns are almost scrubbed to oblivion, and things look like they’re consistently out of focus (though in fairness this could be a condition of the source material or how the film was shot.) Worst of the all the entire image looks severely flat, without any depth what-so-ever. There’s a note in the booklet which states that soft focus was used a lot throughout the film, and I’m sure this is the case, but the digital manipulation certainly didn’t help and makes the film look far softer than I’m sure was intended and the restoration demonstration included as a supplement further suggests this.

Contrast is different from the DVD, looking a little brighter, more silvery, so blacks come off grayer, but reading some items seem to suggest this is the intended look. But mixed in with the scrub-job that was done it creates an incredibly odd look where everything looks artificial and unnatural. Some sequences even look computer generated.

@GF

So you are depressed and will never be whole inside because of a movie you've never even seen before? I can't imagine how you'll react when they change the character on the box of your favorite breakfast cereal. Tucan Sam! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Everyone here bitches endlessly about the treatment SW and Indiana Jones gets on blu-ray, so why can't I talk about children of paradise. Go to criterionforum.org to get a more detailed explanation of the video quality.

you're right everyone does bitch about SW's treatment, but none with as much drama as you (sometimes).
