death of star wars
Time
Star Wars will never die. If I ever want to get into the spirit of Star Wars I'll watch my VHS tapes from the mid 80's. That's the TRUE "Original" Star Wars to me. Just pure VHS originality. Need not this crude matter (in reference to DVD, Anamorphic, better picture etc.) to remember what Star Wars originally was! So in that respect Star Wars can never die. If you have it preserved on DVD in a format which is acceptable to you, you have in your hands Star Wars that won't ever fade away. I'm not saying that I'm suddenly against the cause of getting a better version of the OOT, but I do feel that the early un-fucked with pre 1995 editions are still as true a Star Wars as you'll ever get, unless you some how happen to have copies of the reels of all 3 films from their original release.

I always found it kind of funny that both Berman and McCallum are deviant looking individuals, only second in command (or Berman was until Roddenberry died) to a Sci-Fi legacy. If I were to put anyone in my Axis Of Evil....it'd definately be those two for their continuing influence on Wars & Trek.

Those "Takes You Out Of The Moment" Moments...

First, that scene where Darth Vader reveals that he is Luke's father is meant to be a horrifying sequence. Our hero being the son of someone so evil is not supposed to be a pleasant thought. This is especially true for Luke who has invested so much anger and revenge towards Vader. Luke jumps to escape it all when he peacefully decides that death is better than falling into Vader's hands.

Otherwise, that fall isn't phony looking to me. It looks great. The tube is supposed to be sucking him in like a vacuum cleaner and so the fall isn't supposed to be completely natural.

I've never felt horrified by that scene although to be objective, I can't honestly remember my feelings as a young child when I first saw Empire. I remember my folks put that Empire was one of my favourite films growing up. I'm assuming though that if I felt anything it was awe.

The reason I personally never felt frightened (other than age reasons) is the fact that Darth Vader himself is a compelling character. That moment tacks on another dimension to Vader and the fact that he so easily bests Luke is another thing to just be in awe of. Again it could be just because by the time I saw the scene again as an older and atleast more understand person that shock made me curious of Vader instead of repulsed.....much like when the Return came out I was like "is it true!?" I'm sure had I been able to remember how I took to the films at a younger age I might very well have felt frightened. As for the phony fall, I'm sorry all I can say is just the way they filmed it, him kind of circling it's more comical to me than making me feel "oh shit! He's falling!" I guess that was just a limitation on the way they could do it back then. I'm glad they haven't changed it, it's one less thing for people to complain about but it still does look silly, just to me anyways.

first viewing of the 2006 OOT dvds

That's funny, the article said the same thing I made mention in a thread on another board. I was in Las Vegas a few weeks back and we were in the local Suncoast and on all the advertisements it said "Un-Altered Trilogy on DVD in September!". NO mention what so ever that these Un-Altered versions are actually "bonus" material.

Those screen shots do look pretty terrible.....they aren't going to be that bad are they? Come on that's ridiculous. Hell you might as well watch VHS copies of the O-OT if that's the case (which I just may!)

P.S. I want one of those Han Shoots First pins...

Those "Takes You Out Of The Moment" Moments...
Time
I was thinking of some of the things that bugged me about Star Wars and the list would probably go for a long while, so instead I though, well what moments kind of take me out of the movies or just seem so fake I can't ignore them, and while I could have probably gone on and on about certain things in both the prequels and original trilogy I decided to keep it to a 4 moment minimum (taking two moments from the Prequels and two from the Original Trilogy). So what I'm going to do now is present some screen caps of some of the few things that either amuse me or just totally make me think "oh that's fake". I'm gonna keep it short so that if people want to contribute they can as well. All you need is a DVD drive and a player that allows you to Screen Cap pictures from the movies. You can follow my 4 pic minimum format or make more, although really there's no limits to responding to the thread so if you think of some later, by all means come back on and share! Well here goes.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/6056/cap001lv0.jpg
While alot of people probably hate this battle from the first movie altogether, I find I can somewhat suspend my disbelief about the extremely CGI'ed up part of the movie, espcially since at that point I'm there to see the Jedi fight and could give a rats ass about the Gungans, however while most shots are are fine, I find this one to look almost too "toyish" if you know what I mean. I mean hell they say George was the first person to come up with the "used" universe.....however that's obviously not the case with this shot at the Prequels in general. This shot just takes me out of the moment everytime I see it.

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/1541/cap002oa4.jpg
Palpatine has remained one of my favourite characters throughout the entire series. He was always one of the characters I wanted to know more about (even before the Prequels). However the reason I'm posting this is mainly because of the ridiculous look on his face. He goes from angry to concentrating on the fight, to this hilarious look on his face during a swordfight. Can't help but titter every time I see it.....what were you thinking George!? Come on, how could you not catch that?

http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/44/cap003wn9.jpg
Ultimately, I still like the scene with Jabba The Hutt in A New Hope. It's another scene that helps establish events later in the movies instead of being one of those changes that's supposed to help tie in the Original Trilogy to the Prequels. With that being said, the odd time I do catch this scene I'm somewhat taken out of it. I did a bad job with this capture because you can't fully see what I'm talking about, but if you watch the scene, watch Solo's shadow over Jabba The Hutt. I know it sounds silly really, but the fact that his hand's shadow over Jabba never fails to remind me that Jabba is CGI in the scene. Doesn't quite ruin the scene for me but still takes me out of the moment.

This is more of an O-OT complaint than a Special Edition complaint. It's been fixed up for the DVD release and since I don't own a bootleg of the O-OT on DVD, this screen cap from the Special Edition will do. Witihin the original film and still in the SE, this fall always made me go "what the hell just happened?" I still don't get the purpose of this scene (and no doubt some of you will try and put it in perspective for me) and the fall always looked too phony....I can't help it purists but this is one O-OT thing I think was silly. Takes me out of the moment for a second but we're good again once he does get inside the tube although still...wait.....is he just trying to get away from Vader or is he trying to end it all and when he finally gets to the bottom he has a change of heart? heh...anyways.

Well that's it! Feel free to contribute with your own screen caps, and go ahead and make your own comments and such. Make it as personalized as you can because we obviously don't always see certain things the same way.

I'm not. I think it is too soon. I think Trek needs some time to rest.

Well the last film was out in 2002. It's been 4 years already, and with the movie possibly hitting theaters in 2007-2008 that'll be 6 years. Trek has never really had that length a rest inbetween pictures so I mean they are taking their time in doing so.

who likes the Trek? Star Trek that is. I'm glad they are making a 11th film, although not too happy about it possibly not being a TNG film. I like the Original Series, but please, don't devote anymore movies to that series.

I'd personally like to see them make a hybrid film involving possibly the crew from TNG making a trip to DS9, meeting up with Voyageur, getting into some trouble and Riker's ship the Titan coming in to save the day. Sounds pretty generic but they really should incorporate atleast one of the other shows into the movie for more than a 5 minute cameo.

Anyone else like Star Trek?

I can understand the critism for the movies. George worked on the films and is the go to guy on such things as releases and what not. That kind of critism of Mr. Lucas is pretty justified. What I think isn't called for is the fact that people will come up with the most ridiculous reasons to hate Lucas outside of just not liking what he's done to his movies. People can hate who they want, but atleast have reasonable reasons to actually do so, which was what I was saying.

I actually feel sorry for George. He may have made alot of mistakes that make the fans grumble (or worse) but god damn is he one of the most scrutinized directors I've ever seen. I sometimes have to ask myself (and others) if George can shit comfortably without some asshole fan (again I haven't seen it on this site) critisizing him for it. I've heard some pretty asinine complaints against Lucas, namely one mentioning the name of Lucasfilm as way of George stealing credit or burying workers who put their time into the original films. Another being because Lucas' name was put as the writer for the Star Wars novel (although he didn't write the book himself) that this translates to wanting to be a glory hog? Does George really need the credits on a book to back up the great success of Star Wars? No. Do people care that much? I guess so. Being critical about a film is one thing....but I just don't know...

Well one things for certain, the 2004 edition really isn't the definitive version of Star Wars. With the bad job they did with the Lightsabers, the fact you can still see squares around the tie fighters in ANH and You can see through the cockit of it the Snow Speeder in ESB, you would think they would if wanting to improve upon these films actually make an effort to make these few minor things better....I mean hell they went so far to make fully aware in the one scene in Empire, that in that close up shot of Han he is infact NOT wearing a jacket. How can they catch certain things and totally ignore other more telling things that need changing.

Welcome garethxxgod.

It’s great to have you aboard even if I disagree with your preference of the SE. Perhaps you could help me understand what you like about the Special Editions. I know a few fans of the SE, but they are primarily very young viewers and can’t really articulate their feelings. I’m not trying to put you on the spot here; I just really want to know what features you enjoy. I can imagine an alternate universe where I would’ve really liked the SE. If George had made the OOT and the SEOT available on DVD in the same set, with the OOT getting top billing and the SE as a special feature on the second disk. In a scenario like that I could’ve been a little more objective about the SE. I would’ve seen them as a further development of what George wanted when he made the movies. That was the way I viewed the SE when I saw them in theatres. Now I see them as an object lesson in why revisionism is a detriment to our society.

I'll tell you, nobody has really ever asked WHY I prefer the Special Editions to the Originals. I'll be totally honest with you, as of late I've had the free time to post on certain message boards and seen some really ridiculous oppositions to some of the more in my mind trivial things in these movies. In a way that has helped me reinforce my appreciation for the Special Editions although it's not the only reason I like the SE's.

Firstly I'll help debunk the "myth" that all SE fans are infact children. I guess compared to some of you I could seem like a kid but I'm actually 25 years old. At the wee age of 2, I saw ROTJ....don't remember much but I'm sure I would have enjoyed myself if the entire movie had been Luke sitting outside of Jabba's palace scratching his head in disappointment at his failed attempt to get in (like to throw a little humour in their once in a while). I grew up with the Original films, I liked them all the same probably appreciated them just as similarily as anyone else. Then the 1997 Special Editions came out. I dunno, I was just excited. I couldn't explain it, I had loved Star Wars and I was excited at the time to see these "new features" in Star Wars. Looking back I don't even know if I would have appreciated them so much. With the few new shots they showed in the trailers I doubt I probably would have even noticed. Then a friend let me borrow the films, and while there were a few noticable changes I never really desired to actually buy those films. So I stuck with my copy of the "One Last Time" editions and that was that.

Then the Prequels hit, I was excited for the first film. Like alot of people I probably saw them through a "nostalgic or rose-tinted haze" in which I hoped they would be like the originals or be just as good. I enjoyed the first fim, revisited it on VHS, didn't like it as much but I had moments I enjoyed. Attack Of The Clones I found to be a superior and atleast more faithful release in the spirit of Star Wars. It had adventure, excitement, all the things those crazy Jedi's don't crave. Revenge Of The Sith was definately the strongest part of the prequels and the one I think suffers the least in terms of how faithful or unfaithful to the story and feel of Star Wars. You see I was just way too wrapped up in the story. Nothing really disappointed me except for a few things like oh I dunno Jar Jar Binks....Anakin at 9 taking out a Droid Control Ship by himself by "accident" (I was so glad when Christensen stepped into the role). I had questions sure but how cool was it to see the origins of some of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe? I've said I'm a more "easy going" movie goer and I guess I was more succeptable to George's crazy juice.

I'm sorry if I've rambled on and I appreciate anyone who's actually stuck it out thus far. I'll keep this last paragraph short and sweet. As far as the 2004 editions go, yes I wondered who the hell let these crappy Lightsaber bloopers go? No matter how many people see a Pink Saber, I never really see anything but that evil red of his although after reviewing that comparison site someone posted in the TC vs. SE board I might start seeing pink (thanks alot guys! ) Wait a minute...that's not right, Anakin is young where's old man Sebass? FINALLY Empire has the CORRECT Emperor is in the film...I was happy to know though that they had touched up Jabba once again in better condition than that piece of melting turd that was in the 1997 edition. I like mostly cosmetic changes that help the story along, like the revamped Tie Fighter/X-Wing shots at the Battle Of Yavin, fixing up the disappearing Tie Fighters, the extended Mos Eisley shots (although some would argue they are way too long and doesn't move the story along). Hell I can even accept the Sarlacc and the Jedi Rocks song because I honestly never thought much of them to begin with....and in the end it all boils down to me being a sucker for the story. I grew up with this story just as much as you guys and I honestly can't help but want to embrace that larger picture I guess. I'm sure there's tons more that I could name BUT I'll spare you guys for now and post in the other appropriate threads. Sorry for rambling on about Star Wars. I've gotten it out of my system now, I'll try and keep it down to one paragraph a post

wow. Again, thank you guys for the welcome. I appreciate it. I can't assume to know which board Gaffer Tape is referring to, but if it's that one highly publicized movie discussion board then I tend to agree....apparently being a "true" Star Wars fan is weighed upon how much you like or dislike the SE or PT or OOT, whichever brand of koolaid you prefer...but I'll say no more

The cause of getting the OOT on DVD has never been a problem for me, so I understood that part of the cause and I am all for the releases. I just never understood why people complained about the quality of the product coming out. Infact I still don't to a degree, I'll be the first to say that I'm one of those "easy going" type of movie viewers where I don't need to be totally impressed by the crystal clear imagery to still enjoy the product. I own early 80's VHS copies of the OOT on VHS and that's always been fine for me, but someone not to long ago put it into perspective that with no OOT on DVD, how would it ever be preserved? Finally they were putting it out on DVD, I figured the issue would be over, I was just as excited as anyone....then I found out about the rumblings about the quality. However I must say when I first watched the 2004 editions I blown away by the clearity, which does help to understand the WHY of fans wanting a better produced OOT DVD release. So answer me this, is a beefed up (in terms of picture quality, anamorphic etc) a must for you because you just want that better quality picture or because you want the same treatement the SE got for the OOT or both? Is it a respect issue with you, ie. you are in favour of it because George treats the OOT and it's fans like second citizens? Like I've stated, bare with me here cause I'd be fine with a not so great version of the OOT, but why do you guys or atleast some of you want this better version?

Those articles were quite good. Most people only really notice the main changes, including me so I found myself enlightened. While I find some of the changes unnecessary, some really don't warrant the complaints they get, mainly because alot of them don't really fundamentally alter the story all that much anyways. Examples being different or additional readings in the films, although one reading we can all agree lacked the characteristic punch was Temura Morrison's reading for Boba Fett....I know you tried Temura but god damn....you just did a terrible job.

The funniest thing for me though was the fact that I learned something about the 1997 Special Editions, which I have only seen once. The awful scream as Luke falls after his duel with Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. That high pitched sissy wail or whatever you want to call it was so awful, Lucas removed it from subsequent releases. I actually laughed when I listened to the clip.

Anyways this is definately worth reading for any Star Wars purist.

I appreciate not only the welcome, but the fact that you haven't insulted me for my preference. While a majority of SE fans probably wouldn't care about the release of the OOT in better quality I don't see how George couldn't. It's not as if movies have never come out with varying editions in them. That's a market that he's only now attempting to dabble in, let's hope he gets his feet wet enough to want to go all the way and meet fan demand.

End of SE ROTJ...

For the Hayden/Force Ghost deal, this is one of those changes that I thought was completely unnecessary however have come to accept. I like the Special Editions and usually most of the changes don't bother me, however this is one of them that I just couldn't get around. Why put it in? What purpose does it serve? Does it not infact create another continuity error? I never thought Hayden's acting in the scene was that bad nor was that scene all that vital. People complain about Shaw being removed from the scene, but the way I see it Shaw's vital part in the film is infact still in the movie. That moment where he tells of his regret and sorrow to Luke and of his redemption is what is important and that remains intact in the film. People will argue this with me and that's fine, but what possible purpose does it serve for either Shaw OR Christensen to be there smiling at Luke? It only really confirms that he's passed onto the force...that's it really. It's not all that vital, so in that instance does it really matter who is there?

What SHOULD have been done though I think is that if Lucas was so adamant in changing it, was having them fade from their younger to their older selves in the force. That would have been atleast a comprimise. So while I don't agree that Hayden's 5 second role really ruins or destroys Jedi, I think it was handled wrong.

I personally prefer the Special Editions myself but it's definately unfair to want to bury one version of your film because they don't "represent" what you originally wanted to make your films like. I hope the September releases are a step in the right direction. I have no doubt that with the numerous purchases that he will eventually cave and release stand alone OOT DVD's in the future. There are two editions of the "Special Editions", don't you think he'll cave and bring out the OOT? I mean he can't decide if one version of his film is the definitive version or the other. My good friend actually believes George will re-release version after version of the same movies for as long as it makes him money.
