I’m still waiting on some voice acting and a final watch through before I begin upscaling.

I also need to re-render my opening crawl as I forgot to apply my recolor work to the space background and I don’t want to recolor the text itself.

So, it’ll still be a little bit longer before I’m working on subs and upscaling 😃

^ see above. I have not started upscaling yet 😃

How much is a little bit longer?

It takes me 3-4 days to upscale 50 minutes of footage, I’ve got a 2:08 movie and two episodes around an hour. So the upscaling alone will take me approximately 18 days (4 x 4.5 lots of 50) but that also assumes I don’t have any power outages (living out bush in Australia, those are quite common).

As for how long it’ll take me to get to that step? It really just depends on how much time I get to work on the edit and what I find in my next watch through.

The process of fanediting is very difficult to put a time length for completion on (which is why I tend not to do that and keep it vague). I’m expecting I’ll have a good amount of time to work on this, hence why I’ve said a little bit longer but if something comes up, such as my parental or university duties, this project gets put aside until I can return to it.

So, to directly answer your question, I’m not sure how much a little bit longer is.

g00b, did you finish making the subtitles for your upcoming movie? If yes, can you upload it to your Terabox?

Not yet justinbailey! Subtitles are something I tend to tackle while I upscale my footage. So subtitles and chapters are one of the last things I do in my workflow. Once I’ve made them, I embed them into the video files, run my compression/streaming optimisations and then add the rest of the metadata.

I’ll uploads the subs when I’ve uploaded everything else (or maybe a touch before BC it uploads quickly due to the small file size).

Does upscaling require you to literally leave your computer (or other equipment) on for 1 - 2 weeks consecutively?

If confirmed, that sounds power-intensive.

😮

For me it does but I do it in maximum 50 minute chunks (or the software crashes for some reason) and that’ll take me like 3-4 days. I also don’t have the best PC 😂😂😂 so it could be sped up!

From what I can tell though it doesn’t use too much power (probably because I’ve got it limited so I can keep editing in the background).

I run off solar power and still end up putting energy back into the grid (and get paid) regardless of if I’m upscaling or not 😃

The movie should have a runtime around 2h 8m which I’m pretty happy about!

It’s taking a decent amount of time to get these credits sorted but I’ll be very happy when it’s complete 😂.

Once that’s done, it’ll also take a while (1 week or two I’m guessing) to get all the footage upscaled before I release the movies and episodes together.

That being said I’ll have time to either work on the earlier seasons some more or other projects while the upscaling takes place.

Just a quick update. I’ve finished cutting for the movie (and two episodes) and I’m very happy with how it’s looking!

I’ve still got to reframe a lot of shots for the films aspect ratio, make end credits for the movie and add more film grain.

For both editions I’ve got some redubbing work to do (to fix some bad stormtrooper stuff as much as possible) and upscale the footage.

So still a little bit away from a release but I’m quite pleased with how things are looking!

Thanks for your input again justinbailey, although I don’t think I follow what you’re saying 100%.

Retaining all of Rukh’s dialogue is not my goal, most of it is bickering with Pryce which I don’t think serves either character too well. In my current work print he doesn’t say anything until he instructs Pryce that Zeb has split away from Ezra and Jai.

I don’t want to make any final decisions yet as I’m still on the phase for these episodes of playing around and seeing what I a) can change well and b) what I can do to improve the story

As I’ve been implementing this idea with minor or one off characters (making them speak their native alien language instead of basic then providing forced subtitles), I’m keeping myself open to this idea for Ruhk, though I want to retain much of his basic dialogue. As an example for these episodes, I’ve replaced the death troopers speaking basic and made them speak their cool garbled language again! To compensate for this lack of understanding, episodes that I’ve done this to come with a defaulted forced subtitles track to cover these moments so you don’t miss anything!

I am aware this decision isn’t everyone’s preference! So I try to keep these moments small and relatively non essential for the broader story.

Again, thank you for you feedback and input! I do appreciate it 😃

If I remember right, Rebels never uses subtitled language, even for characters we haven’t ever seen using Basic before. But who cares! It’s your edit buddy. It sounds like a nice touch, and honestabe’s idea is a good one.

I think this was generally due to the younger target audience, and works well in that context. I also agree that a little bit of native language thrown in for flavour would be a nice touch, given the aims and direction of the project. The concept gives me Firefly vibes when they slip into Chinese to utter curses or frustration.

Eddie and Daiyus that’s right! The only character in Rebels who didn’t speak basic was Tseebo in season 1 (if my memory serves). And he had Sabine translating for him. I’ve been on a mission to add in more alien language to rebels recently as I think it makes the show feel more star warsy. Forced subtitles in these moments also gives me more room for story changes (if need be). I’ve already done something like this with the first episode! 😃

So far I haven’t had a good opportunity for Ruhk but if I get a chance to have him speak his language I’m going to use it!

Thanks for that feedback honestabe. Honestly that seems to be the most reasonable approach. If I come across Ruhk thinking (I don’t think he does) or if he’s surprised I’ll use his language. I’m hesitant to change his language when angry as I think that’ll be a touch too jarring. It hints that he can speak more than just basic (bringing back the alien) and keeps him interacting with everyone easily. So far I’ve cut most of his lines anyway as it was mostly him bickering with Pryce bahaha and that seems to have added the seriousness that I felt was missing from his character. It also makes him feel more competent (even if he’s not).

Thanks for the feedback justinbailey!

I was under the impression he speaks Honoghr as well as basic and AI chatbots seems to agree with me (not that that’s much of a source 😂😂😂).

I try to use both legends and canon to help inform my decisions for this edit. If you’ve got a source or reason why he can’t speak / doesn’t speak Honoghr that’d be great! I’m struggling to find a lot of information on this 😃

I do think it could be jarring however. I’ll wait to hear some more input before making a final decision on this idea but thanks again for your feedback 😃

I’m looking for the input on a decision. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m on a mission to add the alien into star wars rebels through things such as making Alien’s speak their own language. I’m currently working on scenes with Rukh and thought initially to make him speak entirely in Honoghr. What does that sound like? I’ve got no idea but I was going to use the Dosh (Trandoshan language) as a place to start and see what I could come up with. As I researched, I found out that the Noghri can speak basic quite effectively.

So, I came up with an idea. What if sometimes Rukh speaks basic, and other times he speaks Honoghr. I’m not too sure I can connivingly pull this off yet but I thought I’d put feelers out there for this idea before I try to make it happen.

If I went with this idea, I’d obviously put some rules in that determine when he uses which language. I’m thinking at this stage it could be a respect thing. I.e., if he respects you, he’ll use your language. If not, you have to understand him.

Secondly, do you think this change would be too jarring for audiences when watching?

Love to get some feedback on this!

I have now recreated all the footage I’ve lost for the episode version of the movie I’m currently putting together for Season 4! I’m very happy to have all that footage back and workable with all my edits!

And don’t worry, I’ve backed all this work up this time! If anything happens I’ll at least come back to this point again! hahaha

Thanks for the suggestion honestabe and justinbailey627! I do typically keep the files backed up, it’s mostly because they were new that I hadn’t gotten around to it yet haha.

After spending a few days away from the project, I’ve thought of how I can relatively easily recreate the footage I lost for the episode so I’ll likely be back on track in a few days for both versions. It’s frustrating but I’ve been reminding myself it could have been much worse, I haven’t really lost anything! (At least I’ve still got all my source files!)

Hey guys, I’ve had a hard drive fail on me and have ALMOST lost all the work I’d done of the movie and I did lose everything my work for the episode varient. I’ve kept notes of all my changes and I’m thankful the movie has been recovered in full (though not as workable as it once was). Unfortunately what was lost was my project files for these two edits. I’ve been able to recover the movie as I’d renders out everything I’d edited recently (LUCKILY!) so I can check how the new aspect ratio looks on different screens.

Looking on the bright side this hasn’t affected any of my other edits, but it’s pretty disheartening and motivation killing for what I’m currently working on.

At this stage I think I’ll release just the movie as to get the episodes back I have to recreate everything (apart from the audio) which is a bit tedious. I might change my mind later on but for now I’m going to focus on just editing a movie/s for the final arks of the show.

aGreatHumanBeing and justinbailey627, thanks for the feedback! I think you’re both correct. The text did feel a touch off and I think it is the amount of words. I think you’re suggestion to increase the information provided is a good one justinbailey627 but I’m not 100% sure about your proposed wording. I can’t believe I missed putting grand admiral in there 😂 so that will definitely be included.

I’ve decreased the size of the crawl text slightly and rewritten the text based on your provided suggestions:

The evil Galactic Empire reigns.
Pockets of rebellion struggle
for survival, scattered across
the vast galaxy.

GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN has
begun construction on a new
starfighter, the TIE defender. It
is far more powerful than the
original design, equipped with
impressive speed and a vicious
weapon arsenal. Thrawn has
hidden the factory for their
construction on Lothal, a planet
in the distant fringes of the
Outer Rim.

As the desperate inhabitants of
Lothal continue to suffer, two
Jedi Knights return to their
small band of rebels based on
Yavin IV…

I’m reluctant to change the final paragraph as it mirrors the official crawls in terms of language and information provided but if I get enough feedback that says to change it, I will! Haha

How it looks:
