Star Wars Rebels Recut - A Fanedit TV Series

I love Rebels, and it’s what convinced me to to give all the ā€œchildishā€ animated series a go (I was an idiot for waiting so long). I’ve done a few full watch throughs with various people, but I think I’m now at the point where I’d like a more refined version for future viewings. Could I a get a link to your amazing work please?

I’ve always enjoyed Rebels and never had big problems with the ā€œchildishā€ nature of some shows or in Star Wars. Although, there are a few moments I think rebels suffers because of how it handles some situations and with some of it’s filler and Cameos.

I hope you enjoy what I’ve done!

After much time and a few technical difficulties… Apparently, if I want to upscale anything over 50 minutes I have to chop it up into multiple files then stitch it back together, this took a few weeks to work out as the upscale was taking 3 days to incorrectly incomplete… Season 1 has been upscaled into 4K! The Uploads will go up soon for both the compressed and uncompressed versions. With the extra added polish of this release we’re finally looking at versions I’m extremely happy with! Can’t wait to get season 2 looking as polished! šŸ˜„

  1. (Malevolence) Plo Koon is shot down by Grievous’ massive ship (the ā€œemergencyā€), possibly as a cold open.
  2. (Hidden Enemy) Anakin and Obi-Wan, on Christophsis, are ambushed and track Ventress, discovering an invasion.
  3. (Cloak of Darkness) Dooku pulls Ventress away from Christophsis since Gunray’s been captured.
  4. (Movie) Anakin and Obi-Wan struggle against the invasion.
  5. (Movie) Ahsoka is delivered to Christophsis (warning of the ā€œemerencyā€), and helps Anakin win the day. Obi-Wan leaves.
  6. (Malevolence) Anakin and Ahsoka rescue Plo. (I might pepper more scenes of Plo earlier than this, but the main conclusion comes here.)
  7. (Domino Squad) The Domino Squad fail their training. (Intercut with the previous.)
  8. (Malevolence) The Malevolence targets a medical station and is destroyed by the three Jedi. Grievous escapes. (I might actually cut this or leave it for a later conclusion. With the prior content leaving Grievous on the loose, that lines up nicely with his suprise appearance later.)
  9. (Cloak of Darkness) Ahsoka returns to Luminara, and interrogates Gunray.
  10. (Domino Squad) The squad are beaten by Grievous’ forces on the Rishi moon.
  11. (Cloak of Darkness) Ventress comes for Gunray, Ahsoka survives, and Ventress escapes with Gunray (intercut with the above). (Add dialogue to have Ahsoka’s interrogation yield the Rishi hint for Rex.)
  12. (Domino Squad) Rex comes to Rishi, and rescues Domino Squad. They learn of Grievous’ Kamino attack.
  13. (Domino Squad) Everyone except Ahsoks goes to destroy or defend Kamino.

The main issue is in focusing the first half of the film. You need to introduce the Malevolence threat early, and it’s useful to give Ventress a good reason to get off Christophsis, but then it feels a bit busy to also introduce all-new clones at the start in addition to all this - though you do want to give the 501st enough time to get from Kamino to Rishi.

I’d be really interested to get more brains on this.

This sounds like a solid foundation for a movie. I think the choice to introduce domino squad later is the better option (otherwise the beginning gets too busy). There could be room to move the introduction to the Malevolence and have Hidden Enemy be the open… I’d say the best way to determine would be to make and watch a few different orderings and see which you like best! šŸ˜„

Hooray! That’s excellent to hear. I don’t currently plan to add subtitles, though they have been requested a lot. I don’t know how much work they’d take, which is why it’s not something I’ve picked up. Does anyone know how to create/edit subtitle tracks? I’d be starting from scratch.

I’ve been using Subtitle Edit for Rebels Recut as it has an audio to text function with Whisper. That gives me most lines of dialogue subbed and timed, then I watch through the episode and fix star wars specific words and mistakes and adjust timings.

It’s a lot less work then it would appear to be! Which is the main reasons I started adding them to my edit haha.

The recolored ones you posted definitely look sharper. To my eyes, the difference is most clear in the 3rd comparison. In the 2nd photo you can definitely see the change in the lightsaber.

Out of curiosity, do you know if the 4k files will be substantially larger or somewhat close in size to the versions you already released?

At the moment the 4k upscales are substantially bigger… like the first episode is 17gb. I can likely make this smaller by running it through HandBrake with some slight compression to give a few options for downloading.

So far, the AI upscaling is definitely worth it (imo) but it takes a while for me to upscale each episode. Once I’ve got all the episodes upscaled I’ll do some more experimenting on how to reduce the files sizes to make it more accessible to download.

If I’m not able to reduce the size, I’ve changed where I host the edit to TeraBox (as it gives me much more room to play with) and I’ll slowly be uploading a few direct download options there as well instead of just the compressed files.

REQUEST FOR SUPPORT

Hi folks, now that this is complete and polished, I’m looking to launch it over on the fanedit.org forums. Threads from unapproved editors can get buried quite easily over there (and I’m still not approved) so I’d be extremely grateful if you could give the thread over there a bit of love - perhaps via a brief review, or a comment on the approach taken over here? Thanks in advance to anyone who helps give this edit a little buzz beyond our borders!

Lets get the support rolling guys! EddieDean has given us a great series, lets give him a comment! šŸ˜„

I’ve started adding subtitles and another layer of polish onto the series, so as I go through you’ll see those become available. I’ve also started playing around with adding HDR and utilising AI upscaling to potentially provide a 4k HDR version of the series, I’m not sure if this will be released but at the moment I’m enjoying the beginning stages of trying to make it happen!

It is in my edit! Season one, episode six. The original version of that episode didn’t feature Cham, but after he returned in the Bad Batch, I completely changed the episode to put him in focus.

So it is! Not sure how I missed it… I must have watched it while drunk one night šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I might edit the arch anyway for fun! Hahaha

(The Bad Batch) Cinematic Version | A More Mature Edit (On Pause)
Time

I’ve been finding Bad Batch interested to watch. From what I can tell the show seems to fall flat when trying to explore the characters (which is a shame) but when it’s focused on the changing galaxy and worlds it starts to feel really solid. I think season 2 so far has been cementing that for me as the world building and exploration is fantastic but the character driven moments are a bit lacking.

If you’re still searching for ways to connect with the show I’d recommend cutting more character moments. Especially if they don’t deviate from the bad batch character stereotypes, or if it’s just repeated moments like accepting Omega into the batch. I’d think this would give more focus to the environments and changing galaxy which could hopefully change how you feel about the show (as that’s its major strength in my opinion). 😃
