I deleted the 1992 vhs pal frames I posted a while back because I realised I had 'snapshot-ed' them all with a hue shift accidently on, left on. Here are two frames untouched. I reckon this one just had the edge on the GOUT master in terms of capturing a flavour of the pastel flavour of the technicolor screening stills

Apologies these are from a ex rental vhs video of one of the first u.k. pal issues of the film. It was extremely snowy and tiny part of inside of the tape had snapped off. I managed to capture a few minutes during a test run of my extremely low grade capture device with the default medium settings before the tape killed the vcr heads (crudded them up). The capture came out pinker than it looked on the tv screen. Long story to make the point this doesnt do the tape justice. BUT you can still see there was more colour there circa the early 80s as compared to GOUT master.

Like how you've tamed the down the excesses of the red and yellow shift/bleed and achieved a much more natural/organic/"in tune" feel. Once I'd adjusted to not having such a rich level of colour overall and accept the state of the print on its own terms its lets you watch without being distracted by colours popping all over the place in a bad way. Subtle finesses work here. nice job... whereas i would have tried blowing stuff out on this sucker but that way has limited appeal outside of my screen!

Info Wanted: Calling all Color Correctors: Can this source yield a different set of results to Gout?

Looking back at these I might not have got the original adjustment right - so I took it forward to early. Even so there seems to be a limit on the relationship between the amount of bits/softness in the image and amount of depth that SHOULD appear with those bits/that softness. Otherwise the layers look too phoney. maybe the answer is to strip it back and only build it back to the original density??

Here's a cross pollination with the 2 questions just posed in Anctufaalb's thread:

Here's then an attempt at changing the blue and green curves to dovetail with the red (with absolutely no science behind it).

I am going to hazard a guess by saying what you're doing is similar to cap averaging except your going frame by frame and using opposite techniques to find a middle ground?

The combined shot of Han above looks nice but it also loses the detail from the second shot while retaining the dark of the first shot.

Maybe with some tweaking and playing you'll come up with something that can retain the best qualities of both and not be blown out.

Cheers for your effort.

Agreed this is pretty much the same as averaging +this technique does seem to submerge details. The plus side is it can give added depth to what hasnt been submerged. The trade off is between colour and detail so far, maybe that might be resolved by subtler moves. maybe.

Three-strip Technicolor: Please help!

Here's a GOUT-related question: Assuming that we don't make any color changes beforehand, how much do the reds need to be lowered to fit in with the rest of the colors? That is, what change would result in them no longer being over-represented? Is it just the reds?

This is pretty much THE question for me. I saw some posts where someone indicated they could repair the red channel out of the RGB channels. My understanding is that the red shift is an organic shift in the film - its not the red channel is damaged but the greens and blues have faded leaving the red over represented. Anyone know how correct that is? If so can the green and blue be repaired?

edit: had a go at a blind ajustment to blue and green curves to find a result = http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Calling-all-Color-Correctors-Can-this-source-yield-a-different-set-of-results-to-Gout/post/598240/#TopicPost598240
