Estimating the original colors of the original Star Wars trilogy
Time

One of the weaknesses of the color restoration/balancing algorithm, is that it requires sufficient amounts of red, green, and blue (or their mixes) to be in a frame or image, for it to give accurate results. The Luke meets Obi-Wan frames are particulary challenging, because the colors are supposed to be skewed towards the oranges. I’ve been considering how to deal with such frames or sequences. One way to deal with this, is to find areas in the frame that are supposed to be balanced, namely the grey/white areas. Calibrating the color restoration/balancing algorithm on the white/gray parts of R2-D2 for example gives much improved results:

Now this is much better. I didn’t like your earlier corrections because they had cold greenish grading whereas here the image looks colour corrected without losing its warmth.

Collaborative 35mm restoration proposition

Any board members here keep in touch with the former members of Team Negative1? Before their disbanding they had acquired Fuji prints of ESB and were going to start working on them. It would be nice if through those connections you could retrieve the prints and restore them, plus the Technicolor print of SW but from what I read that one will be a lot harder to come by.

The Silver Screen Edition is truly amazing, I have a question though. Why didn’t you colour correct it to match the technicolor prints? IMO it would’ve made it a lot cooler.

The upcoming Eastman vs Technicolor version will take care of that.

Team Negative1

What exactly is the Eastman vs Technicolor version?

Info Wanted: Question regarding 'Jurassic Park 3D'... (and info)
Time

Hey there guys, I downloaded the movie and while I won't argue as you guys are the experts here I must say I find the pale washed out colour timing unsatisfying and decided to boost the colour saturation to about 20% which is obviously wrong and you will say I went overboard (poita would probably crucify me) but it made the film look much more appealing to my eyes. However, my PC can't handle a 1080p file this large.

Could you please upload a 720p version to the 'spleen?

OK guys, after searching around for different clues the 3D BD is definitely the closest thing to the colour timing of the the original theatrical prints, however it's not perfect as there are many instances in which the image has this weird pinkish cast and others in which they went overboard with the hot filters (the shot of Gennaro approaching the amber mine looks like a badly preserved 1970s B-movie) and anything that's supposed to be white has a hint of orange, whilst the skies have an odd hint of orange-pink in several frames.

As the 2011 BD is the best in terms of image quality and the frames have less cropping than the 3D BDs I believe adjusting the colour timing of the 2011 BD to match the 3D BD would be having the best of both worlds, wouldn't you think? In fact I browsed a few screenshots and did some adjustments, it's not perfect by any means.

Info Wanted: Pierce Brosnan era James Bond movies - why the image quality so bad?

My understanding based on some first hand accounts of those who've seen them is that the films are currently be re-mastered in 4K, but for overseas use (I think some french channel wanted to air them or something)... Apparently though they didn't plan on releasing these on Bluray or anything since they were going to soon be re-doing them in 8K?

They talk about it a couple times on the James Bonding podcast. At any rate, hopefully they'll see the light of day sometime soon. I love my 007 50th Boxset but there are some flaws with it. Thankfully all my favourite films (other than Goldeneye) are in pretty good nick.

There is hope, then. Now let's see if they give the first three Brosnan movies a proper remaster.

Wow. Nicely done.

Are you planning on doing a bluray release? Cause I'd love to see this.

Like I stated in my first post: No, I am not, this simply a fan project for fun, I do not have any video editing skills whatsoever and even if I did my computer would probably melt as it is rather ancient. It can however be a useful guide for whomever wishes to go ahead with such an undertaking.

The thing about the Blu-Ray's though is that not all of them are the Lowry transfers, and I'm pretty sure Goldeneye is definitely not which would explain why it looks significantly worse than the rest. The Lowry master had major framing issues, and I believe the Blu-Ray was derived from a much earlier video master that was originally created for the DVD, and then DNR'ed to death for it's latest release.

The Blu-Ray releases are a mix of Lowry restorations, older video masters, and newly done studio transfers. Some of the Lowry restorations had quite a few problems, some of which have been corrected for the Blu-Rays and others that have been made even worse. The most problematic of the Lowry restored films were substituted on Blu-Ray with either new transfers or older Pre-Lowry transfers smeared with DNR. I know TSWLM always looked like shit on DVD and the Blu-Ray is a brand new in house transfer that looks light years better than it ever previously had on video.

I cannot comment too much on the Brosnan films specifically though as I only own a handful of the Blu-Rays with Goldeneye being the only Brosnan one I have.

Well, I did have the privilege of watching TND and and TWINE in cinemas and they looked gorgeous on the big screen, and once I saw the home video releases and tv broadcasts I was puzzled at the drop in image quality. As for Goldeneye I can only hope there's a 35mm print in mint condition that can be scanned for a proper home video release, but that's just wishful thinking at this stage considering the poor treatment it has received.
