What is my main way of watching the original trilogy?

I’ve had success watching via portable solid state drives. Not USB thumb drives, but the terabyte portables. Just got to make sure the read/write speeds are good enough for video.
I just plug it into my ROKU ultra USB port and use the media player on there, or plug it into the USB port of my UHD Blu Ray player and watch it from there.
The UHD Blu Ray player allowed me to select the various audio tracks, I have not figured out how to do that with Roku’s built in media player.

I think on the other site they have the VHS and maybe even laserdiscs versions scanned already. Might save you some trouble if you look there.
Even if Disney as a whole completely stops manufacturing and marketing disc based media, it does not mean we won’t see disney titles on disc. They can always license out the work to other companies, and in fact I think for all parties involved, that is probably the best way to go.
Disney discs pressing and mastering of titles have been hit or miss, especially with their 4kUHD catalogue. It reeks of laziness and they have zero quality assurance going on. It would seem a win-win for all if they shut down their physical media division and let a 2nd or 3rd party do the work.

You will love it. The 4k projects are simply amazing, especially if you have a projection set up.
Earlier today, after reading these posts, I pulled up 4k83 to look at the scene in question. Specifically, I looked at the object circled in the above pics. I was looking at in still mode, and in slow motion, and it really does look like it might be the tennis shoe that many have sought out.
I also feel that there is some validity that (lucasfilm) may have removed it for the later releases.

Well…this is sad, but typical of Disney.
What puzzles me is that Disney still thinks the 1980’s paradigm of “VHS collecting mentality” exists. Somehow they still believe that regardless of how many times the product is released, people will re-purchase it because it has a new cover/packaging. I know this was a selling point and genius marketing strategy back in the VHS days, but how can that still be now?
It just saddens me that a classic franchise like star wars has been relegated to this throw away crap.
I still remember when star wars had a home video release date, it was a big deal. The Faces release was a big deal. So were the boxed 2004 and 2011 sets. Yes they had their problems, but at least it was relatively new product…sorta.
Other than the Lowry masters, NOTHING has been done to improve or preserve these classics, at least not officially.

Concur. While some studios tend to use HDR in a gimmicky fashion, there are some classic movies where HDR has made (in my opinion) a huge impact.
E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 2001: A space odyssey to name a few, look SPECTACULAR with HDR. I always chuckled at every DVD, VHS and Blu Ray of E.T., because they NEVER got Elliot’s red hoody color correct. It usually ended up orangish, over-saturated red (almost glowing), or severely muted. The 4k UHD got it right though, and I attribute that to a fresh scan and having the availability of WCG and HDR.
Close encounters of the third kind really impressed me. There were a few moments, that I actually sat there thinking I was watching film. The air traffic control scene earlier in the film is a good example. Very contrasty with dim lighting but glowing radar panel readouts and screens… Just looks amazing.

There have been Star Wars stories that have had tight continuity between them, and they don’t feel any less like Star Wars as a result. The Kotor games still feel Star Warsy and have all the Star Wars qualities while still having tight writing and telling a competent story.
If the 1977 movie had been poorly written, none of us would even be on this site or so invested in this fictional universe. The fact that Star Wars has had so much sloppy writing since then isn’t something endearing or worth celebrating, because we know Star Wars can be better than that. All that sloppy writing and confusing continuity will do is drive away potential fans from checking Star Wars out.
To me, Rogue One was a VERY polished movie. I really enjoyed it. That being said, in my humble opinion, it did feel a little less star warsy. Primarily because it did not have the cheesy writing, humor, or as many continuity errors as the OT movies did. They really nailed the look down though. I walked out of the theater knowing it would be an immediate Blu Ray purchase once available.
To me, Rogue One felt less Star Warsy because it reveled in violence and moral ambiguity a little bit more than the Lucas films did. I wouldn’t say it was devoid of continuity issues, either. The ending of the movie doesn’t really line up with how ANH starts, and ends up making both Leia and Vader look stupid and the Empire look less overbearing and tyrannical.
I have never read any of the star wars books / expanded universe stuff outside of shadows of the empire, which… honestly I did not really care for.
Despite “All that sloppy writing and confusing continuity”, the Star Wars movies still manage to endure. Have you seen how many people show up at star wars conventions and celebrations? I also hear there was a theme park somewhere as well…
I do agree with you about rogue one though, I never did care for parts of the ending. I don’t feel the vader “slaughter” scene was needed at all. I really feel they took that overboard. As far as the ending lining up, you have a good point there as well. Does anyone know how Rogue One was originally going to end? I kinda had the impression they tossed out the original ending in favor of fan service.

I would actually argue that if everything in the star wars universe actually aligned perfectly, then it would not be star wars anymore.
Being apathetic about plot holes, I can understand. But loving plot holes? That doesn’t make sense to me at all. It’s not like Star Wars needs sloppy writing to feel like Star Wars. If the continuity were more polished, it wouldn’t suddenly feel less Star Warsy.
In regards to my fondness with continuity errors and plot holes, I mean that only where Star Wars is concerned. There have been movies and TV shows that have turned me off due to massive plot holes and / or retconning. Likely those programs took more of a serious tone, and/or were very intellectual and thought provoking.
But Star Wars in its purest form was never meant to be taken seriously. No one knew back in 1977 that Star Wars would become a worldwide phenomenon, or that it would spur a massive industry brand. It was never “all planned out” as Lucas later commented. The very fact that Luke was playing tonsil-hockey with Leia 1980, and then three years later “surprise! she is your sister!” in ROTJ speaks VOLUMES on how much Star Wars was intentionally, that’s right I said it, INTENTIONALLY inconsistent and full of continuity errors and plot holes.
Don’t you think someone, somewhere during the writing, filming, and production of Return of the Jedi would have raised their hand and said “hey… This does not make sense. If Leia is his sister, it will kind of make things… a little weird and creepy?”. I am sure it was brought up. Had to be. Hundreds of people worked on that film. But in the end, it still comes out to “who cares?” “It’s star wars, no one will take it seriously”.

When I want really excellent sci-fi, I don’t go for star wars. When I want fun and adventure and memories of being a kid, I go directly for star wars and always will.

Sigh… I expect there to be the usual “millions of voices crying out… and were suddenly silenced” to happen.
I fully expect this to be re-pressings of the 2019 UHD discs. But I also fully expect that pending concrete details on the new discs, there will be banter, excitement, ridicule etc. as some will hope/wonder if these could finally be official releases of the OUT in 4k.
I hate to be cynical, but we have all seen this before. It is to the point of being cyclic.
At any rate, I hope I am wrong. I would really enjoy seeing a premium OFFICIAL release of the OUT. Until that time (if ever), I will sit back and enjoy the wonders of the 4k projects.
I am really hoping Disney licenses the work out. I have little to no confidence that they will treat the star wars franchise properly. I don’t know if it is a “we don’t want to spend time/resources/money” on making decent releases, or if it simply laziness on their part. The fact is they DO have all the archive materials and resources to make the pent-ultimate release, and for whatever the reason may be, they are sitting on it. I really don’t buy into the “it’s George’s wishes to keep it buried” idea. He sold lock, stock and barrel. Disney is out to make money on that investment. But who really knows.
It seems that with Disney lately, the MO is quick turn-around, minimal effort for maximized profits. The 2019 Star Wars sets screams of said MO. I have no way to track how well the “skywalker saga” sets sold, but I wonder why anyone would buy something that offered little to no real value over what was previously available.
I mentioned this on another thread, but I personally feel that if disney were to release star wars (again), it would HAVE TO BE something of significance. The market has already been saturated for nearly twenty years with releases of sub-par DVDs, Blu Ray, and now UHDs. Disney must realize that they have beaten this horse to death already. They are at the bottom of the barrel. I can literally see no other thing they can do but to release the original unaltered trilogy, in a manner fitting of a properly scanned and mastered-to-perfection UHD/Blu Ray.
Somewhere at disney I hope someone is weighing this out. They must know of the 4k77, 4k83 and soon to be released 4k80 projects, and how they are highly prized by (perhaps a small number, who knows) fans of the series. It may be a small market, but let’s be honest… the market for the SE might not be a market anymore somewhere down the road.
I could see it happening, but only for the original trilogy.
Fact: Disney has a massive star wars archive that could result in newer and spectacular extras for a set.
Fact: Disney (hopefully) understands that a next physical release has to really stand out from the previous LAZY/Little to no effort releases from 2019, most of which they did not do any work on, but rather another company.
Fact: Criterion has the staffing, manpower, and motivation to do outstanding work.
Theory/Question: I could see Disney doing this solely on the basis that they don’t have the time or inclination to play around with or dig through the massive amounts of film, video, audio snippets, photo prints etc. that are laying around in the “archives”. Someone in Disney must surely be weighing out that a substandard release would cost them more in the long run as opposed to licensing the trilogy out to a company that would make such an awesome release that it would sell enough copies to make a quick buck for the Big D.
The 2019 sets sold decently, but probably not as well as they projected, which is why they also optioned it for their streaming service.
Putting out another set of the OT would have to be done wisely. The market is saturated with this product already, so it would make sense to do something extraordinary for the next release.
Also…I am sure they are very aware of the 4k projects here. At some point they need to reach out to this niche market. It literally is the bottom of the pot for Disney, so I could see them licensing the work out to criterion, and selling a limited amount of sets before taking criterion’s work and selling them later down the line for themselves.

Maybe an animated series of the entire Star Wars saga would be more interesting. To see classic events from the original films told from a different point of view, maybe from different characters too. With the goal of a 9 film series being written a lot more coherently.
This. Exactly This. I have always thought a traditional anime style retelling of the entire star wars saga would be fantastic. It would have to be done traditionally though, none of this CGI fake anime style. I would love the style of art to be similar to something along the lines of Neon Genesis Evangelion or Akira.

It is possible (just my opinion) that the same folks that have been turned off by the bluish / magenta tones of the 2011 blurays are looking at this project (which looks similiar in tone to said blurays)and are simply not stoked about it.
It’s also possible that folks are just super busy not to notice yet.
For my own case, I am so looking forward to project 4k80 which is nearing completion, that this doesn’t really register on my radar.
I want to be clear. I am not knocking on the above project, because the results are pretty nice. But as you also mentioned the blue-ish color… which we all have seen/owned.

What tunes are you listening to when you are in the zone? Or are you the silent worker type?
Earlier last week I colorized about five frames and it seemed to drag on … yesterday I popped on some music and before I knew it, I had completed a probably around 18-20 frames.
I was just curious as to what drives you. Also, when you hit the wall, what do you find helps to get back at the work? Some days I look at at I have done and feel ok, and other days I look at what hasn’t been finished and it seems like it will never end.
At any rate, it is always exciting watching those wheels build up!

Don’t sweat it brother, there is a high probability this is guy is trolling given that a) His join date is literally within the last 16 hours or so, and b) his first post just happens to be the equivalent of poking a bear with a stick.
Many of us understand the hard work you and the other OT folks are doing. I myself am working on colorizing a deleted scene and it is literally a frame by frame effort.
Folks, LIFE HAPPENS. Leave the worker bees alone. If you are in desperate need of The Empire Strikes Back, there are SEVERAL OPTIONS available.
