DROIDS PAL VHS Preservation 4-DVD set (Released)
Time

Video Collector said:

Note that the PALs also look horizontally squeezed compared to the NTSC versions, something we saw on the Ewoks tapes as well.

That's only because PAL DVD stores images at 1.25:1 (NTSC stores them at 1.5:1 so "raw" screenshots of NTSC fullscreen DVDs are stretched instead of squeezed).

I didn't crop off all of the black padding but this approximates how your DVD would look on a TV: http://check2pic.ru/compare/28601/

SelectEvery(10,a,b,c,d) is also slightly faster because it only reconstructs 1 frame instead of 2 for every 5. But there is the downside that only one of the five "patterns" works for each source cadence (as the AviSynth documentation notes, with the Pulldown method there will be two that work out of the five versions shown).

So the script above that was written to only check where Pulldown breaks would take twice as long to write with SelectEvery(10,a,b,c,d).

Anyway, for that method I've been using an .avsi function instead of adding the big block of lines to every script. I had written my own manual+semi-manual IVTC plugin that seemed to run a little faster still but I introduced a bug at some point that made it crash on exit all the time and abandoned it.

Info: Back to the Future - without DNR & EE
Time

I recorded the 1st movie from Encore Avenue HD the other day but the compression is laughable. The stream is MPEG-2 12.8Mbps 1080i but it must have been recompressed a couple times before being sent over the cable system to end up like this. My lower-bitrate 720p capture from a satellite commercial channel looks better.

Comparisons: http://imgbox.com/g/WJyU10Cn6i (Blu-ray, WOWOW shots from AVS, Space HD, Encore Avenue HD)

It's available On Demand again but my BlackMagic capture device has stopped working with my SSD. Fun.

How to capture HDCP-encrypted HDMI sources (Vudu, Netflix, Directv, Virgin Media, etc.)
Time

The other splitters do have that functionality. They allow you to play Blu-ray and PS3 on a TV that complies with HDCP. They don't allow you to break HDCP.

If you want what I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089DVCT8

The options are Great Elect via Fulfillment (which is what I did because I got Amazon Prime shipping), Great Elect, or Amazon themselves. Pennies separate the prices.

If you want a cheaper and smaller alternative that others say works for stripping HDCP (including reviews on Amazon): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/

Anyone record onto Betacam SP?
Time

I was just at a thrift store and picked up some apparently-used Sony Betacam SP 10s and 30s for $0.50 each, along with a sealed Sony S-VHS master quality tape.

I assume the Betas are used, but since they aren't labelled I'm guessing not by a professional production. Figured I would offer them up here if anyone wants to first take a look and see what's on them, then use them for their own purposes. Cost + shipping.

For capture cards look for mentions of PS3 and Blu-ray players.

^ That was my advice. Not for splitters, where they just shove in the keywords to get search hits.

The listing never had comments. The trouble with the listing you have there is that there are a bunch of sellers throwing up different 1x2 splitter models and then people comment on them without specifying who sold it to them.

I have happened upon a retail VHS tape that has tone + grey once the program content ends (there is a long period of black before it drops off to this test signal, so I take it to be an artifact of the duplication process). I also found one with tone on black at the end but that's pretty useless.

No, GetFLV, TubeDigger and a few other similar programs actually save the incoming data from the websites.  They are true rips, not screen captures.

Flash is frequently tries to fix their code to stop them, and they have constant updates to get around it.  It's a fun little arms race.

I assumed by "several of these streaming services" you meant the ones listed in the thread's title.

There are a number of sellers that have like the same-looking box -- but who knows what's in them. Reviews are inconsistent -- some say they get the pictured box (metal), some say they get another kind (plastic).

Has anyone verified by purchase that this Amazon seller (or any other for that matter) has a splitter that actually handles the "hand-shaking" for devices that can't?

Can you post this claim of a plastic box? That's odd.

I got mine from Amazon, but from a different listing before they raised the price: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089DVCT8

Despite the photo, there is no CVID logo on the box.

From what I've seen in screenshot comparisons here and there, the Japanese BD is the same as the HD DVD, but also has cleaner upper and lower edges of the picture. The HD DVD is bright and blurry at those edges.

(referring to Terminator 2)

If clean edges are what you want then grab the WMV-HD somewhere. It's 1440x916 anamorphic and contains a few lines that were cropped from every other release.

The loss caused by the vertical stretch on the JP is obvious. Take a look at the shingles in the first comparison. Unfortunately the theatrical cut EU/AU HD DVD/Blu-ray encode had a level of DNR applied that wasn't used for the superior Special Edition encode.

List of laserdiscs that contain video test patterns
Time

The Wizard of Oz: The Ultimate Oz - Collector's Edition - on Side 4 long after the movie, and 4 minutes after the Turner logo are some odd patterns. It starts with 30 frames of regular color bars and then gets into a bunch I've never seen before, with extremely high-pitched audio tones (also much louder than the movie soundtrack). In total the onslaught lasts 600 frames.

Anyone in Moscow who is also a fan of the cartoon "ReBoot"?
Time

This is already a long shot, so I won't shrink the Venn diagram any more than that.

I'm trying to obtain the 9 Russian DVDs listed here. As if trying to get DVDs from Russia to Canada wasn't hard enough, they are out of print and the one retailer that has some of the volumes is unable to obtain stock for the rest.

I've tried to PM/email the owner of the fansite I linked above via a forum, but he hasn't accessed it for a year.

No, that won't help at all. If the only thing that you needed was to record color bars on your playback deck, mastering houses wouldn't record bars at the start of every tape they put out. Their clients could just calibrate their playback equipment once in the way you describe, instead.

There was an S-VHS calibration tape released in 1989: Perfect Picture System. If it could be located, it would at least be somewhat useful for calibrating professional VHS recordings.

They must have added that exclusion to the list just recently.

Here is the US account for the same seller. I posted the Aussie one because it was slightly cheaper before, with the exchange rate.
