The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

There were some 3D bits that threw me, 3D doesn’t work well with wipes it seems. I recall a bit where it was nice scenery with a ton of depth and then there’s a 2D wipe to a Star Destroyer floating in the middle of the theater. Both effects were great, but the transition threw me off. I want a 20 minute bonus feature of the poor 3D conversion artists trying to figure out how to make wipes work in a 3D space.

The impression I got is the Resistance is a covert army fighting the New Order on behalf of the Republic, they don’t publicly sanction the Resistance, but are probably funding them secretly. It’s the worst kept secret of the Cold War era the galaxy is in a the beginning of the film. The New Order is the splintered remains of the old Empire regrouped and reformed under the leadership of this Snoke guy.

Some quotes from “Before The Awakening”:

“Have you heard of the Resistance, Poe?” “Rumors, mostly.” “Such as?” “Such as there’s a splinter of the Republic military that…that feels the Republic isn’t taking certain threats as seriously as they maybe ought to be taking them. Specifically the threat posed by the First Order.” “That’s a very diplomatic way to put it, but not an entirely inaccurate one.”

Republic space and First Order space were separated by a buffer zone of neutral systems, and the peace that had been negotiated—a peace that many, including Poe, believed existed in name only—meant that military action taken by one side upon the other was considered an overt act of war.

I thought the movie was very enjoyable, and the original bits were fantastic. Even the parts that echoed ANH/RotJ went by fast and were well executed. The kids were great, Harrison actually seemed to care about acting for the first time in years, the action was fun to watch and easy to follow.

I wish it was a bit less of a remake, but if you’re going to try to revitalize a franchise, why not steal from the best?

The Only REAL Podcast Thread!

WHM announced they’re going to do another Star Wars episode and commentary. I’m so excited, you guys.

In other news, I’m three episodes away from ending my run on Standard Orbit. It’s been fun, but recording, editing, and publishing takes up a lot of time, and 110 episodes (which is the number of “episodes” of the TOS crew) is a good run.

I’ll still be available for guest spots on other podcasts though.

That article was written by Matt from dinosaurdracula.com and formerly of x-entertainment.com, which are/were both fueled by nostalgia. StarWars.com was asking for this when they hired him. But even so, it’s hardly official word. My podcast network producer does an article for StarTrek.com, that doesn’t make my podcast canon. 😉

Adywan will be painting his own official cover art, as he did with A New Hope, I believe.

Due to one of the health problems i have, it is now impossible for me to paint any more of the covers for Revisited. Unfortunately drawing and painting is something i have had to accept that i will probably never be able to do again

That’s awful to hear, Ady!

I’m sorry, but if you are going to do a new series, don’t d*** around with it. Broadcast it on tv, not on some stupid CBS all access on demand service. How the heck to expect to get viewers that way? I can also see confusion happening between this new series and the new movie coming out.

The movie will be well out of theaters by then, and CBS/Paramount has always been about trying to base their entire experimental network on Star Trek. Makes sense to me.

You're wondering if Sony moved SPECTRE closer to TFA on purpose to make you have to choose whether to spend your money on it or TFA?

No, I don't think Sony is trying to take your $10 so you won't see Star Wars 6 weeks later. 6 weeks is plenty of time for a movie to make its money. I feel bad for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. No, actually, I don't.
