No. The Gammorean Guards do not look real. They look like real rubber, yes, but they do not look like real living creatures. Looking like a physical object is not enough - Creatures need to look like creatures, not rubber.

I agree 100%.  The moment that guard showed up on the screen, I felt a huge let down.  It was comical.  At least I assumed it was meant to be.  That rubber suit is so fake & silly looking that you know immediately our heroes are in no danger what so ever.  Same with Jabba.  Both looked like Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.  I half expected 3PO to say "Hey, big daddy".

I'll agree to disagree with you guys on that then. I can see how the Gamorreans look a bit rubbish now, but I bought into them as a kid; the way their masks moved with animatronics kept them from looking just rubber I think. Their hands were terrible...

But Jabba holds up for me as a believable and menacing character today. (Plot notwithstanding). You two might mention how you think puppet Jabba compares to the CG versions in Star Wars or Phantom Menace if you've seen them, as that would be more in the context of digital alteration.

Back to Spielberg and tools; is there anyone who disapproves of the CG in Jurassic Park? For me this proves it is a valuable tool. Didn't they kind of invent CGI in order to make Jurassic Park in the first place?

Gollum always looked fake to me. For the time it was great CGI, but it still looked fake. This is my point when it comes to CGI - it is not real. A plastic mask is real. It may be poorly crafted and look like crap, but it will still look real because it is real and not just data on some computer.

Jabba looked great in ROTJ in 1983, in 2003, and will still look great in 2033. Gollum will be considered a joke in 2033. THIS IS WHY CGI IS BAD FOR FILMS UNTIL THEY HAVE 100% PHOTO-REALISTIC TECHNOLOGY. Filmmakers stop using FX in the proper manner; as slight-of-hand (as another poster put it), and instead put it front and centre where we can see how fake it looks.

Nailed it! 1983 Jabba looks better than anything ever made on a computer. I totally agree that something can look crappy but knowing that it is really there makes it more immersive. Lucas has had two shots at CGI Jabba now and neither of them begin to approach the illusion of a living creature the way the puppet does. I do disagree about Gollum, but I think they should mainly stick to spaceships and dinosaurs (which they keep the f*** out of our Star Wars).

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Thanks Harmy! This is the first preservation that can really replace the GOUT for me. I will mention a few issues, and I apologize if these have already been addressed:

You added back quite a few shots that I would not have noticed or worried about but left the Leia hologram with vertical lines :(

The scene when the droids reach Tatooine looks the tiniest bit strange - did you use a shot from the GOUT as a static background image? There is no movement in the grain/noise as Threepio moves. This is not really a problem, just curious.

The background wobbles quite a bit where the second floating droid has been removed, but it is infinitely more preferable to seeing the floating droid :)

Overall this is excellent, my favourite version for sure. I also had no synch issues like I did with the PDE. Thanks again for your hard work Harmy!
