Kiri Hart still works for Lucasfilm as do at least some of the people in attendance, right?
Would this be the first sanctioned screening of the original version since before 1997?
I recall hearing a story once about how George himself was at a screening he thought was going to be the SE and it was still the original version and he appeared visibly uncomfortable about it. That was a story from some random person on the internet though, and I don’t remember now where I read it, so take it with a grain of salt.
There will be no one in attendance on Saturday. The event with the LFL employees is tomorrow.
I tend to agree. Didn’t James Cameron have to bug Fox just to strike a couple 70mm prints of Titanic, or pay for them himself?
That’s exactly what the research I did suggested. Titanic was really one of the last ones.
I’m very interested to see what this is and, potentially, what this means…
From what I’ve been able to find out, there was never a 70mm print for any of the 97 SE’s. They all had the DTS tracks and were 35mm only.
So this is the original version, right?
I wonder how faded the 70mm print is and just when it was struck.
Yep.
And that’s one of the many questions right now…
Marcia… Marcia formely Lucas ? Seriously, one of the best editors of her time is going to attend the double feature ? That’s awesome. And in 70mm glory !
(yeah there also is R1 scheduled but even if I don’t like it, its cinematography is among the best of the Saga)
(and I love Giacchino’s score)
Have fun Lucky ones !

It will be streamed live!
Over the last 40 years, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds. But the impetus to create and inspire remains the same. This event will contrast the analog technologies developed for the first STAR WARS released in 1977 with the all-digital toolsets used to create ROGUE ONE released in 2016.
Key contributors from both STAR WARS and ROGUE ONE will share the journey of creating the impossible with their breakthrough visual effects. Our list of stellar participants includes: John Dykstra, Dennis Muren, John Knoll, Ben Burtt, Marcia Lucas, Bill George, Harrison Ellenshaw, Bruce Nicholson, Richard Edlund and Rachel Rose. Hosted by Kiri Hart, co-producer of ROGUE ONE, this event promises to be both inspiring and insightful.
Although I wish that had been on our collective radar a heck of a lot sooner, that this is happening at all has to be significant. This isn’t some theater back east that’s doing a free screening before closing it’s doors forever, this is the Motion Picture Academy! Disney and Lucasfilm must know about it.
As far as I know, this was just announced yesterday.
The streaming event Thursday night should be incredible - especially with Marcia in attendance. I can’t wait to see it!!
Wow, I am speechless. This is incredible.
Yeah. I’m shocked that this isn’t getting more press around here

Samuel Goldwyn Theater
8949 Wilshire Boulevard
Beverly Hills, CA, 90211
Join us for a rare and exclusive viewing of Star Wars (1977) and Rogue One (2016), featuring a 70mm Academy print of the original film. These two movies are intrinsically connected, as Rogue One tells the story of how Princess Leia received the Death Star plans that allowed the Rebel Alliance to destroy the Death Star in Star Wars. Bring the family and enjoy this double feature at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.
Tickets: $5
Please Note: No late entry permitted.
The Terminator 2 UHD DNR fiasco was due to Lionsgate using the 3D master for the UHD, which was DNR’d for the 3D conversion. I don’t think The Abyss would have that problem. Though I wonder how the color would end up looking, considering how Aliens looks on blu-ray.
LG used nothing. Studio Canal did the encoding. All LG did was release it.
There is Macrovision on the Executor box set. All the special features, minus the 4 “making of” specials were on the Definitive collection laserdisc set. Someone has already captured those and converted them to DVD but i can’t remember who’s set these were on. These would be higher quality than copying from VHS
But we also have 16mm transfers which is the highest quality we’re going to get right now, no?
I’m not seeing any new special features on these that weren’t on the laserdisc boxed set. Am I missing something?
So I’m looking for some suggestions for a new capture card.
Both of my current capture cards are external and Hauppauge devices.
I have the HD PVR (with component) and the HD PVR 2 gaming (with HDMI).
My problem is that these devices are notoriously bad at freezing up/glitching when there’s a break in the digital signal. For example, when I am capturing from a device and change from the menu on a particular app to the video program that I’m trying to play, it will load and the light on the Hauppauge goes off and goes back on. Whenever that happens, I’ll miss the first 10 seconds of whatever I’m recording because it’s too busy trying to stabilize the image. Even though I have the Apple TV set to send the signal out as 5.1 and 24fps, it still glitches.
Thus far I have tried two different devices:
Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder - I never got it to work because it uses an old Thunderbolt. My laptop (which isn’t necessarily new - 2+ years old) has Thunderbolt 3 and was told that I have to buy a $50 adapter to make it work. It was returned.
Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle - My next attempt was with the Shuttle. I never got it to work at all. Never got a signal from HDMI, S-Video or Composite. They told me that I was doing everything right. 😦
So I’m stuck now.
My requirements are relatively simple:
1080p 23.976 capture
5.1 (doesn’t have to be bitstreamed - I can re-encode)
I’d really appreciate any advice/help!
HBO always shows the theatrical version of everything, unless noted. It definitely was the theatrical version.

If source is 1080p i.e. current shorts or promos not on disc, there should be a menu for BD25 instead of data files. Especially the ALIEN 40th Anniversary shorts.
Resolution doesn’t matter. There is no correlation between resolution and the ability to have menus. For that matter, you could have menus for the older files as well.
Then why not make menus for the older files? Re-encode them as AVC for BD25, no more archaic MPEG2 for DVD. No DVD releases whatsoever. Time to move on from that format.
If there’s going to be random data discs for the older files on BD25, why not use HEVC/H.265 with MKV? Better compression. No need for HDR10. IDGAF if it won’t play on Apple.EDIT: This is only for those features not on ALIEN Covenant or any other disc. Easier to have 1080p/24 HD content to receive menus on BD25s compared to NTSC or PAL. So, all NTSC files to have its own BD25 with zero menus and the same for PAL files for BD25? 1080/24p with menus as its own Archival disc, NTSC as its own Archival disc, and finally PAL as its own Archival disc.
I can dig it.
Then do it yourself. I prefer everything in its original frame rate with as little re-encoding as possible

Apparently all 4 are coming back to Netflix next month. Assuming 4 is the theatrical cut, I’ll capture it and upload.
It is!!! I just looked it up and it has Jakes uncut death and the original ending!!!
Yeah I checked it last night. I’ll grab it and upload to the usual place. Should’t take too long at all.
To MySpleen correct?
Were you able to capture it?
Yep. Just haven’t done the edit yet.
My suggestion would be to burn the original files as files instead of authoring a disc. It’s far easier to do and I combine all types of files and resolutions onto BD-R’s.
Good luck with that… ^^^
I just got it uploaded. Finally. Working. Have at it!
The previous fan docs were pretty screwed up. The now-banned individual who put it together re-encoded everything to PAL specs when it wasn’t needed. So anything that was archived probably could have fit together in a different way. It really is too bad.
I’m trying to upload an entire 15gb compilation to the spleen but having trouble. I got it already. Thanks!
The tape listed is 153 min and the original film is 113 min. But you did say extra footage is 10-13 min long so what’s the other 30 minutes?
Where do you see 153 minutes?
Sea of Love (Thrillers Edition) - VHS. Extended version of the film. Nothing noted on the box. Contains deleted scenes from tv version but uncensored.
I can’t find anything on a Thrillers Edition, Could it be the Collectors Edition?
This is it…

Great! Added.
It says 1 minute. That’s a gross understatement. I don’t remember how much difference it is but it’s probably closer to 10-13
Sorry, got the minutes mixed up. It should be around 40 minutes. Thanks for clarifying that.
Wait…huh??? No. It shouldn’t be 40 either.
