Great video! He actually says “despecialized” but also says he can’t get Disney to release the original unaltered versions.
I don’t have 4K equipment yet, so I’m mostly interested in the special features and if there will be anything new in there. I imagine that I might replace my Blu-ray collection with something like this in a few years, but for now it seems too expensive. Especially considering that you could get almost 4 years of Disney+ for that money, and watch the 4K versions that way.
It also seems weird to put both the 4K and HD versions in the same massive set. If you have a 4K player you don’t need the HD discs and if you don’t have one you’d only want the HD discs. This way it just makes it unnecessarily expensive and probably physically huge as well.
if you don’t care about quality then, sure, you could get 4 years of Disney+.
Remember, you own nothing with Disney+ and you’ll have to subscribe for the rest of your life to get those movies. AND you have to hope they don’t ever remove those particular movies.
I’ll never understand anyone’s interest in something that’s streaming only. That gives the studios the power.
Also, if you look at all 4k releases, they always come with the regular HD versions. Disney never includes any bonus features on the 4k discs, including commentaries. That means that if you want any of that, you have to include the HD disc.
Added that it’s a 27 disc set, according to the specs!

EDIT: did the math and it works out to ~$36/movie. Absolutely insane. Short of the OOT, i can’t begin to conceive what kind of special features it would need to have to justify that price.

When I worked at Lowry Digital Images, we restored the entire Young Indiana Jones Chronicles at 1080p at least, though I’m pretty sure it was a higher resolution than that. So the HD masters are out there.

I don’t know. Maybe they’re prepping for a bigger release. At the time Lucas made the Young Indy Chronicles, he wanted it all to be for sale on an “Interactive CD-ROM” complete with learning materials about actual historical events talked about or shown in each episode.

I will be shocked if Disney releases very many catalog discs anymore, including Star Wars. I truly hope I’m wrong. But I bet they’re all in on Disney+ and none of those remaining Pixar movies will get discs

Does anyone who went to the 10th Anniversary remember what “rare films from the Lucasfilm library” they showed?
I don’t get why people buy these. They are so easy and cheap to make It costs maybe ten to 15 dollars to get blank DVDs, an empty DVD case and the paper for the cover and inserts. Plus, the cover artwork for edits are numerous and available online for free. I personally aim to make my own DVD sets for my own personal usage when I find the time and house space for them. heck, maybe make some for my friends for free.
It’s very, very easy to understand why people purchase them.
It’s really that simple. For a lot of people, 1/2 are the biggest deal-breakers. They’re computer illiterate.
And I also know many people who just don’t have computers anymore. They only have tablets.
I’m not condoning people selling them but there’s a reason that they do. I’d say that a majority of people buying them fit into one (or all) of the categories above
I’m very excited for this. Disney+ is going to be huge. Great time to be a Star Wars fan!
