Info: 007 - Open Matte Bond Movies...
Time

Some time ago, some of us were talking about the open matte scenes in TMWTGG[1] and that got me thinking about the rest of the movies. I have read on other forums[2] that the Daniel Craig movies are sometimes shown on TV open matte so I’m curious if we could make a list of Bond films that are open matte either on film prints or TV broadcasts? I don’t have any of the open matte TV broadcasts but I would love to see Casino Royale and especially Skyfall since I missed out on the chance to see it in IMAX. Some of these could be on a particularly inappropriate organ but I couldn’t say for sure.

Open Matte list (so far):
The Man With The Golden Gun (35mm print has variable aspect ratio)
Casino Royale (HDTV is sometimes open matte)
Quantum of Solace (HDTV is sometimes open matte)
Skyfall (HDTV is sometimes open matte. Full open matte is IMAX, unavailable anywhere)

Some unconfirmed rumors that I have heard:

The Casino Royle PSP disc is open matte
The Casino Royale Fullscreen DVD release is open matte

and this 16mm clip on eBay which I can’t afford: https://www.ebay.com/itm/16mm-IB-TECH-Film-CLIP-GOLDFINGER-1964-James-Bond-003-Now-with-DIAMONDS/113659583367

Wow! 😮

I love this site, every day is a revelation and education on my favourite films. Is there no way that we could create this version ourselves through dabbling with visual effects and motion graphics software?

The 3 second ending has already been “recreated” on youtube.

That footage ought to scanned and preserved if possible. There must be enough Bond fans around here (and elsewhere) who could chip in and buy it?

I’d be interested in chipping in, the trouble is finding enough people willing to do the same. Would it be overkill to scan this in 4K, or would 2K be the upper limit on 16mm film like this?

Info: 'Dr. No' - Rare Uncut Version 1st Beta/VHS release 1982

Uh, S.W. that link directs to an entirely different but certainly interesting “feature”, perhaps worthy of a preservation in itself. 😄

😃 Here’s the correct URL, I hope:

Reminds me of the shifting aspect ratios of a Christopher Nolan movie. Nothing wrong with that I’m just curious what it would be like to watch TMWTGG that way.

Info: 'Dr. No' - Rare Uncut Version 1st Beta/VHS release 1982
Time

Apparently (unconfirmed) the very first Beta/VHS release back in 1982 is a rare uncut version that is different from all other home video releases which were slightly cut. Here is what I know:

The uncut version of Dr. No shows a more extended fight with the taxi driver, Bond shooting more bullets at Professor Dent and Dr. No’s henchmen beating up Bond was toned down.

all home video releases afterwards (VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, etc.) include the following cuts:

  1. Dr. No’s line I’m sure she will amuse the guards was considered too sexually suggestive, and has been redubbed instead to The guards will amuse her.

  2. Shortly after, Dr. No’s henchmen beating up Bond as he is sat at the table has been trimmed, introducing a dissolve to the next scene much earlier to cover the removal of violent footage.

  3. Bond’s fight with the chauffeur has been trimmed, including the removals of blows to the chauffeur when he is unable to defend himself. A knee kick in this fight was also removed.

In 1983 there was a re-release of Dr. No via CBS/Fox on CED, Beta, VHS and Laserdisc. This leads me to believe they “fixed” something I mean why else would they re-release the movie just one year later?

I have checked this against the very first laserdisc release from 1982 but it has all of the cuts mentioned above.

The release in question would have one of these two covers:

Unfortunately I have been able to get a hold of one these tapes. Hopefully someone may have better luck and we’ll be able to confirm this.

A Man To Respect (1972) - Kirk Douglas 16mm film opportunity (* unfinished project *)
Time

The movie is called A Man To Respect (1972) aka The Master Touch. An aging safecracker is released from prison and is approached by his former boss to do one last job. He decides the best way to break into one of the most secure vaults in Europe is to pull off two heists at the same time! The movie also stars Florinda Bolkan and Giuliano Gemma.

So far the movie has only been available in crappy public domain releases, edited down from 112 minutes to 92 minutes and mostly in pan and scan.

I have committed to buy a rare uncut widescreen print of the movie.
