JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit: turning a mediocre trilogy into one really good film (Released)

Sorry, I’ve been taking a break from keeping up on fan edit stuff the past few months and just got back on here. Thanks to those of you who have watched J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and given some nice feedback! I’ve tried to make the edit feel as close to an actual studio release as possible, so it means a lot to hear some of you say that it is your “go-to” version of the Hobbit from here on out.

After a good deal of waiting, I’ve finally managed to have the film accepted into the Internet Fan Edit Database. Here is a link to the listing on Fanedit.org!

https://ifdb.fanedit.org/j-r-r-tolkiens-the-hobbit-maple-films-edit/

I greatly enjoyed watching the Blu Ray of your edit and applaud what you have done. I have only 2 minor complaints though:

  1. The transition from AUJ to DOS feels a little rushed but as a positive the transition from DOS to BOTFA is ABSOLUTELY SEAMLESS!
  2. We don’t know why Gandalf didn’t follow them out of Rivendell.

Besides these 2 minor issues I have with the edit, I must say…this edit is truly incredible. It now takes its rightful place as the prequel to the LOTR Trilogy in our family’s marathons from this year onward. Thank you!!!

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)

Well, really this is more for archival and/or viewing directly from a disc in a hardware player. That said, the menus do mostly work on a PC with Kodi, though with some extreme lag (like 30 seconds) between when you click on an option and the current menu stops / the next menu comes up fully or the selected video starts. Not that it helps you any with your network media player of choice.

So on a Sony blu Ray player there should be no lag, correct?

Just a heads up that I will be removing the edits from MEGA in the coming days. If you are yet to download the set and would like to do so, feel free to PM me (asap), otherwise they will still be available via myspleen.

Thanks to everyone here who chipped in on these forums for your encouragement and assistance in getting these blurays finished. It was a pleasure working on them and sharing them with you all. Hopefully those that downloaded them have enjoyed what they’ve seen.

I’ve decided to retire from fan-editing to work on other things, so if anyone would like to adapt these blurays for future releases of the Despecialized editions, please feel free to do so with my blessing. But the simplest method would be to swap out the new video (when Harmy releases it) with the outdated version using multiAVCHD.

Thanks again, and best wishes,

njvc

Thanks tons man! I have finally decided to throw in some cash for a pioneer blu Ray Burner and will hopefully get your full trilogy set burned 😃 again, thanks so much. They now have the professional presentation, packaging and bonus features of an Offical release 😉

Is the third spinoff decided yet?
Time

suspiciouscoffee said:

Personally, I don’t really want spinoffs centered around established characters. Rogue One has a mostly new group of characters (AFAIK there’s only one guy from a Clone Wars episode or something, and Vader will probably be just a cameo), and I wish all the spinoffs would be the same way.

I think that you shouldn’t use established characters if they don’t serve the story. But if they logically fit into the story your telling then it only makes sense. A Han Solo Movie IMO doesn’t follow this. It’s an entire movie on one of the most loved characters of Star Wars. Whereas with Rogue One, it’s an exciting prequel to episode 4 that helps bridge the gap between 3 and 4. But the thing is, Lucasfilm has already said Vader isn’t just a cameo but he’ll have a prominent role. Is this forced like the Han Solo Movie? Not at all. Vader logically would be a huge part of the story they’re trying to tell. And if they give me more James Earl Jones with good diagloue and kicking ass then I’m fine because he fits in the story and it doesn’t shrink the universe. But a Han Solo cameo would shrink the universe because he has no place being there and it would be simply for fan service.

Same reason that Bail Organa will play a small role in this…cause he fits into the story. Being one of the creators of the alliance means that before his death he would be heavily involved in the Rebellion.

Anyone else digging the idea of an obi wan standalone. Definite tumors have circulated about it. And boba fett was originally planned for Josh Trank but after Fantastic 4, he was dropped. the idea of a boba fett movie has lost hope and the rumors/optimism for a Obi Wan film set between episodes 3 and 4 has arisen. I’d love it to be called “Ben Kenobi”. And in all honesty, I’d much rather prefer a obi wan spinoff rather than one about boba fett.

Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)

You guys think this is the best version of the film? Trying to decide between this and the TeamNegative1 transfer.

Depends on your taste. This one has overall better quality, looks like a Blu Ray but is in many places only a recreation of the original version. TN1 has less detail, looks more like film projection than Blu Ray and is 100 % original Star Wars 1977.

I honestly can’t tell the difference between the 100% original and the recreations so I go with 2.7 for better colors and better quality. If I want a filmic experience then I’m going with the Grindhouse versions.

Iv been on Vacation the past week and will be for one more week before I can test this but I have throughly reviewed your entire Cutlist and am filled with excitement to say the least. It looks to be an improvement from the earlier version. I can’t remember it clearly but are you using the ultimate edition shots of Empty streets, shops, buildings at the end? Thanks again! 😃

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread
Time

That trailer was glorious! So far I actually think it’s shaping up to be visually superior to TFA. The overall quality of the film on the other hand is still a big wild card. The lack of John Williams and the rumors that they’re not using a crawl makes me nervous. Especially not using a crawl. You can distinguish the standalones from the episodes by the the movie itself and its tone. The crawl is inherently part of Star Wars and is used in books, video games and comics. Comics for hells sake! But not in Rogue One!?!..which could use some backstory about the state of the Galaxy before the film starts. My dream music outcome would be keeping the composer, and mostly using new music but when appropriate call back to John Williams. It’s be a nice balance between new and familiar tunes to aid the beautiful visuals. Still though, I am thoroughly excited to see how the film turns out 😃

I agree entirely! Though it’s the worst of the trilogy IMO I still think it’s a very good movie.

Have you seen the “Dark Knight Saga Recut, The - Part III” fanedit? It makes the film so much better. That fan edit is better than the theatrical version and Batman Begins in my opinion.

I thought it was as good as the Dark Knight.

EDIT: But then again I don’t view the Dark Knight as the holy grail that some people do either.

For me it’s on par with Batman Begins but nowhere near The Dark Knight just like Return of The Jedi is nowhere near The Empire Strikes Back or how The Last Crusade is nowhere near Raiders of The Lost Arc.

I prefer Last Crusade to Lost Ark. Sue me

Updated live-action Bats ranking:

  1. Suicide Squad

  3. Batman Forever
  4. Batman 66
    9) The Dark Knight Rises

How in the fuck!? Suicide Squad better than TDKR!?! BvS…Hell No! Batman 66??? Joel Schumacher shit above TDKR???

I know it didn’t live up to the insanely (almost unbeatable) bar that “The Dark Knight” set but IMO it’s a far superior film than what you paint it out to be.

Suicide Squad

6/10

Overall, a very dissapointing experience sadly. I awaited this with optimistim but felt it failed on many levels. The wonderful aspect of the movie that I feel salvages a positive review is the chemistry between the team and the some of the characters. I fucking loved DeadShot! He was funny, and infectiously charismatic. His action scenes were a lot of fun. I thought the Joker was decent but the sample size was too small for any real comparison between him and other performances. Harley Quinn was great also. And Viola Davis was pretty badass too. A couple cool action scenes and a fun soundtrack is about all that’s left of the positives.

Firstly, The characters that didn’t work for me were Rick Flag, Katana, Croc, Boomerang ,Diablo and Professor Moon. The relationship between Rick Flag and his girl was unsympathetic and forced. I’m in the minority on Diablo. I think that his character arc was also thinly written and developed. Croc, Katana and Boomerang barely had any presence. Croc and Boomerang were literally there for comedy purposes only.

And oh god the villain was AWFUL! The story, the issue, the conflicts the team runs into were poorly thought out. They had so much potential with such a fun group of characters but they instead end it with some dumb sorcery end of world shit. It just lagged on and on with a non climatic final battle. I wish they made “The Joker” the main villain for the film and by the end the team can escape with the joker and they have to choose. DeadShot doesn’t wanna choose evil again (cue flashback to daughter/batman alley scene) but they convince him that he’ll never be accepted if he goes back to Viola Davis. He then chooses to escape with the joker as he shoots his way out with tears drop down his face. A sad tragic ending that displays a villain seeking redemption but ultimately realizing how broken they are and how they’ll never be forgived.

The overall direction, pacing and editing was poorly executed. The team dynamic, humor, action and Viola Davis save it from being a piece of crap though. Still very sad that it didn’t live up to the potential it had.

Cautiously… excited for Wonder-Woman.

Question. Will Ady take any new additions to the Star Wars canon into consideration when working on ROTJ? Can ships from Rogue One make an appearance in the Battle of Endor?

Don’t know. I could demand that he do so if you like. 😉

Your not funny.

Everything I said was serious (except for the parts that aren’t).

Still not funny.

-Wanda and Vision hit it hard in tight closet.

Please tell me those things don’t occur in that order.

It’s a nice end credits scene. Leaves something juicy at the very end. Some VFX work should do the job. A ghost vision will float right over and seduce Wanda. Should have a preview up soon 😃

It’s doable considering what some have done with Snoke (turning him into a hologram).

Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen.

By being an asshole you literally just made adywan delay the project. Be patient and don’t make shit jokes. Adywan owes you nothing so don’t be an ungrateful bitch.

I “literally” “made” Adywan delay the project?
How did I “make” him do that? And where’s your proof of this anyway?

Do try to remain calm.

I was just joking. Like honestly chill out. I think I made it pretty clear from the first post that I was just playing around.

Captain America Civil War Rogue Edit! (on hiatus)
Time

My goal is to improve the overall narrative of civil war with the following changes. Will have Offical artwork, BD50/digital/DVD release and uploaded to regular channels.

Here is the Offical Cutlist:
(Please comment thoughts before first work print)

SOURCES

  1. HD Cam Copy
  2. HD Telecince Copy
  3. DVD Screener
  4. Offical Blu Ray

CHANGES

-Captain Americas suit has been color corrected frame by frame to a red-Orange dynamic. Original suit was pathetic.
-photoshopped Star Trek poster into Peter Parkers room. Helps connect to later scene 😉

  • rescored entire film with Parks and Rec Intro Song
-Will Smith and Clint Eastwood now have cameos in said film.
-Restructered film so that the final fight happens first then the airport scene finishes the movie. Helps build narrative flow and now the airport scene is no longer the appetizer but it’s now the dessert.
-Added flashbacks with purple tint from “The Incredible Hulk” for increased emotional resonance.
    -Altered color scheme
    -Altered shadow casting
    -Altered Lighting Levels
    -Vision dies in Siberia

Please leave comments below for any suggestions guys 😃 I really hope you like my overall ideas. I’m kind of going for a GoTG, TDK, Ex Machina, Birdman, Transformers 3, Spotlight, Spiderman 5 kinda tone.

THANKS!!!

Adywan, if you’re reading this, please forgive my attempt at dead pan humour. I was mostly just having a go at those who chronically complain about your progress. I thought I was just outrageous enough, and over the top enough, that it would be clear that my comments were snark (as far as I know there aren’t five official levels of demanding something).

I’m a huge fan. I’d heard about your SW Revisted for a while before I watched it, because I thought “how good can it be”. And I’m frankly bit of a SW purist so Harmy’s project had more natural appeal to me. But when I saw what you did I was stunned that a fan could produce something like that. And I saw so many details about the film I’d missed simply by watching with your changes text commentary. So many lovely tweaks you did, and I even didn’t have a problem with Duel of the Fates.

Your work is nothing short of a miracle. Just please try to have it done by Friday.

Are you a socially isolated idiot or cynical first class douche? It’s one of the two…
